@@johnyraven9770 it's a b-side made from a sneaky recording of a fierce argument backstage after one of their concerts. It was discussed in length earlier in the documentary, like part 2 I think.

i don know why Somewhere in Time doesn't get the respect it deserves...the production, the playing, the writing, were all incredible. Sea of Madness, Stranger in a Strange Land, Wasted Years, and the brutal playing on Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner are unmatched...I still listen to that album today...Seventh Son was good but I always thought it a crime they left Stranger on the shelf..
It was a good album, and a good tour. But really the beginning of the end of the best of Maiden's work.
@@TheRamsesII i dunno, there be glimmers of Maiden of ol' all over 2006's A Matter of LIfe and Death, "Mother of Mercy" is a killer track off of Final Frontier and some other fresh thrills..... They still got it, but whether or not it's the greatest material is up for debate. I still listen to Somewhere In Time like Black Sabbath's Mob Rules. Maybe it's the producer i a big fan of haha or I just into certain periods of the band
@@mleightle9289 I've seen them a few times over the years, and shows have always been great. And there are good "later" songs here and there. I first got into them with Piece of Mind, and then Number of the Beast. Two Minutes to Midnight is probably their best after that. That's my benchmark. But all that said: I'd go see them live again in a heartbeat.

Stranger has a great mid-part and solo, otherwise not a great song. Sea of Madness should've been included on the Somewhere back in time tour, though. Great track.

In part II you have Bruce telling a fan "You can't play heavy metal with synthesizers". I thought to myself "yeah, cut for one year from that". That Pole guy was a visionary, no less.

My first and only album of theirs
My gateway album to heavy metal. I was a synth nut at the time and this was also the first album with guitar synthesizers I ever heard, which was part of the excitement.
Somewhere in Time is Iron Maiden's absolute best album. Incredible sound, the best guitars and the absolute best vocal performance by Bruce. And the packaging is the most beautiful in the world.
Somewhere in time has always been one of my favorites. Its transcendent in its sound and feel. Alexander the Great is genius.
Alexander the Great was a genius, ok, but the song was just some story about some dead dude, and they played music while they told the story, trying to make it sound metal. It wasn't metal. And it dragged on! I think Steve was trying to recreate Rime of the Ancient Mariner. I thought it was a massive and painful fail.
My heart sings when I think about Bruce Dickinson during the Seventh Son era, I literally just now had tears in my eyes while watching that live footage of him in all his late 80s glory! For a moment there I went back in time and it felt good

I was sort of the same way. But I came to learn two things you can always count on with Iron Maiden:
1) Iron Maiden will never give less than everything they've got.
Steve Harris hasn't forgotten all of the work it took to create such a large and dedicated fan base, and he's equally dedicated to it and very protective of it. It translates into every aspect of the band.
I didn't get to see them until the 7th Son tour and I went into the show knowing maybe three of their songs because my best friend had a cassette of "Live After Death" that he would play now and again and you know what? It didn't matter one lick because the production was so full-on and precisely executed that your eyes didn't have time to rest or get bored.
Aside from Maiden, I know of only one other performer who could pull off that trick at any show, anywhere in the world, and he's gone now; his ashes in an urn at his studio and his world famous "Cloud" guitar on display at the Smithsonian. I like to think that he and Eddie Van Halen ( whose guitar is on display there as well ) like to get together after hours and "cut heads" once in a while. 🤟😊
2) Iron Maiden will never insult your intelligence.
Though they used to get the "Spinal Tap" comparison once in a while back when they really started ramping up the live show, the fact of the matter is that Maiden gave Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer the inspiration to pick up their guitars, write the music for the movie, and go for it full-tilt with no apologies. Would you care to guess what the most successful comedic outing of those three guys
combined careers just so happens to be? Damn straight.
No, Bruce and Steve write good lyrics and are capable of telling a compelling story. UP THE IRONS!!!
Iron Maiden are the gods of metal. Never afraid to experiment with music. Singer Bruce is the pilot of their own plane Ed Force One, they have their own beer, an amazing mascot Eddie, and the best band members ever, and the coolest and greatest stages anyone has ever seen. Up the irons
I bought somewhere in time when I was 11. The first metal album I ever owned and 32 years later they are still my favorite metal band.
My earliest maiden memory is my dad playing the "piece of mind" cassette on the way to holiday over and over and me and my brother singing the trooper ( badly🤣) I would have been 5 yes old. Been a maiden fan ever since despite a few wonky albums since . Fav band ever.

Seventh Son… sonically is by far their best album. It’s one of those albums where it just sounds perfect. Like Back in Black. It’s recorded and mixed perfectly. Can tell the guys put a lot of work into crafting those songs! My favorite studio album as a WHOLE.

Every album in the 80s for them just got better. The next two albums were more of a plateau if anything and went downhill with the two blaze albums.

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - Can I Play With Madness. Always loved Iron Maiden but that album was my favorite. Saw them three times in Atlanta and have such good memories. I'm 57 and my son who is now 24 grew up on them and loved Run to the Hills even as a kid. I was and still am a metal chick. Thanks for the great memories. I will hold on to them forever.

Alexander the Great is probably one of the best (unknown) songs of Maiden, and I've been a fan since '84. You sometimes glimpse momentary similarities between some of their albums. For example, To Tame a Land is another great 'unknown' Maiden song. And, these songs could be considered their best.

Guitar synth Maiden is my favorite Maiden. There's something incredible and epic about those sounds and the feeling of isolation in Bruce's vocals. Indescribable.

7th son is my absolute favorite maiden album....the medieval aspects of it are fantastic...
Sadly next album NPFTD was a poor album. AFOTD was a better album.

Adrian wrote my favorite Maiden songs.
He was Maiden's secret sauce. His blues influence and melodic songwriting skills were sorely missed after he left.
This band is still my absolute favourite.. My first ever gig was Belfast 1990 as a 12 year old. Every album an era..

Not the best... but Favorite. I adore the Science Fiction Wall of Guitars and Synths, it's one of a kind in Maiden's Carrer.
Bloody hell, can you imagine what we might have missed out on, had Adrian stopped that tape before Steve heard the intro to (what would become) Wasted Years? I actually still remember the impact it had on me when I first heard it too, whilst gazing in wonder at that album cover. Timeless.
As far as music goes I believe Iron Maiden is the closest to actually getting to a higher point of existence. Every night, every tour for decades has kept the same amazing feel. Now in 2019 they are better than ever. Truly an amazing inspiring bunch of human beings. All with basically zero promotion. This is what humans can do all by themselves. I was an original fan club member from the eighties and they're still just as exciting to me. They've always been in contact with their fans way way before the internet made that easy. Never sell out. Every other huge band has and you can go see them today and they all can barely play and charge 2 Grand a ticket it's really a shame. Every human should see Iron Maiden at least once it'll change your whole idea of what's possible.
This was a great tour!!! At MSG ,we saw someone throw an M-80 into the air ,and it bounced off the lighting rigging,The band did not notice -"Rime of the ancient mariner" was the song,and the M-80 droppped,The fuckin garden all screamed at once as it was dropping---and BLOOM!!! it went off right near Bruce`s face and he fuckin reeled sideways grabbing his face.We thought he must be blinded(my friends and I) but he just started walking -pacing back and forth...The band did not miss one fucking note!!!!!!!!! Then Bruce came back to the front of the stage and pointed at the guy ---the crowd had grabbed him and started pounding on him---Bruce told the crowd to bring him onstage so he could---"YOU!! I`LL RIP YOUR FUCKIN HEAD OFF !!!!-Security intervened and Bruce gathered himself,and they finished the whole gig. Amazing memory.

Most people would agree that SiT is one of the best, but among the 80s albums, it's probably the 2nd or 3rd most underrated (Other than Killers and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Btw SSoaSS is my favourite Maiden album and SiT is my 3rd. 2nd is Powerslave in case you're wondering.
Maidens first 8 albums which also includes LAD is the greatest stretch of music and will never be duplicated. They were on a role and thats why they are my favorite group of all time. Up the Irons \,.,./

This is probably the best period in Maidens history. I love Somewhere In Time but Seventh Son.... now theres an album that still gives me goosebumps and I've been listening to it for over 30 years... I know ts a long time coming, but I look forwarrd to part 4 pf this series.

Iron Maiden was/is my favorite band of all time. The only time I saw them love was Monsters of Rock in Schweinfurt Germany in 88. Loved them so much, my army vehicle was named Eddie
I was at Donnington in 88 and saw them at Wembley arena later in the year. They were both brilliant shows. The stage at Donington was enormous. It was in the Guinness book of records in 89 for being the loudest show ever!
Brought back a lot of memories for me watching this documentary, Donnington was my the first gig I ever attended. I also went to one of the Whitley Bay dates - Both were awesome.

Dave Murray: "I don't know what were we thinking? Hahaha. That was the era, the period where basically... it was big loud costumes... and loud productions... loud band. Everything was really loud about everything. You had to wear sunglasses quite a lot, because it was just sheer volume.... actually it was a lot of volume coming from just the clothing!!" Hahaahaa

Watching this part, especially the second half of it, I feel so sad for Adrian. The poor guy was right about the tempos. I do love Maiden England so much but thanks to the wild tempo, Bruce is almost chocking on some of those songs. Then we get Nicko defensively admitting it with a laugh. A year later Adrian was kinda forced to leave. Also Bruce is still bashing a magnificent album (Somewhere in Time). Maybe because his ideas weren't accepted? This is just so sad IMO.
Somehow I think there's a conceptual and spiritual connection between Powerslave, Live After Death and Somewhere In Time. I normally tend to listen to them together
saw both SIT and 7th Son tours. Epic shows. just saw them 2x on Legacy tour as well. just as Awesome as back then. Love this band.

In a hotel on the edge of a cliff...these dudes were multi millionaires before the 90s. Love it too cos they're why I started playing guitar. Dave Murray was my ultimate fave for a long time, he just looked so cool to me. Then I found out that it was Adrian that was playing most of my favorite solo parts, not all, but most.
Both Murray and Smith are great - Dave's playing is more modal, melodic and legato and Adrian is more bluesy and raw.
The first time I ever pressed record on a tape deck was "Number of the Beast" off the local rock station. Maiden was something other than a band. It was the Universe at its peak focus spitting its best light out to a generation with the blackest holes for ears. I think every Hard Rock/Metal Guitarist should learn Steve Harris' bass lines & patterns/shapes as well as the guitar parts. Quite the library of what makes Rock/Metal tick!

They are both brilliant. Maiden used to be able to produce interesting and atmospheric epic songs, unlike nowadays unfortunately.

Moonchild is how you open ANY album. You come out swinging and making sure you capture your audience INSTANTLY. As soon as I head that song, I was HOOKED. Has been my favourite album since I first heard it in late '88 and nothing has come close since.!
7th Son is my favorite album. Dont get me wrong I like others for sure just that particular entire album just resonated with me

I was at Monsters of Rock Donnington 1988 about 20 feet away from the two that died (during Guns & Roses)...changed outdoor concerts for ever. I was also luck enough to see Maiden 3 days earlier at a secret gig billed as Charlotte & The Harlots at the Queen Mary College in London (still have the ticket) it was truly amazing as is Maiden totally unique.
Seventh Son is my all time favorite album hands down. Remember teaching myself the drums to the Evil That Men Do for hours got pretty good at it lol UP THE IRONS

@@patrickthometz6365 I was a bit disappointed with "No Prayer for the Dying" when that came out, but they did redeem themselves IMO with the 2 live albums (which, again IMO, were better than "Live After Death" and should've been sold as a double LP) and "Fear of the Dark". I was 11 years old when "Seventh Son" came out in 1988. It seemed to take forever for the next album. It did give me plenty of time to get their other albums though. "Powerslave" was the 2nd one I got.
I love Dickinson, but nothing beats the haunting vocals of Paul back at the beginning, with that punk raw gritty sound. This band has done a brilliant job of creating 3 distinct eras with 3 great singers. Yes, Blaze was a damn good singer as well. LOLOL
Blaze might have been a great singer (I do not know), but an appalling choice to replace Bruce.

As much as a band like this had a massive responsibility been who they were and producing some of the finest heavy metal of the 80's / 90's and beyond they are a huge part of people's lives too. When I was a young lad I used be woke up here in Limerick Ireland every Sunday morning to my brother's loud stereo in the next room playing iron maidens latest album of the time. (Late 80's) but them days were gold and those memories I cherish. We were lucky to have grown up in such great times!! 💙

Too fukn funny, I'm a 45 yr old who's in school for an apprenticeship. I'm up late studying and trying to listen to this at the same time. I gave up and just watched this instead....much more interesting than alternators and rectifier bridges. Hopefully my exam is more focused on part three of the history of Iron Maiden.

The fact that no good HD recording of the Somewhere in Time exists is a travesty in Heavy Metal. That album is one of the greatest metal albums ever and the management (yes that's you Rod!) never saw the $$$ into filming it?

They came to greece many times ..I see them in 2005 to terravibe in Malakasa athens.the early days tour.there we have a big fire in the center and we dance around her.
Those days with Martin Birtch were really special. One fantastic album after the other. Kevin is good too, but he's no Martin.
No band does it the maiden way, for sure iron maiden is unique, everything they do is top class, the quality of this production is flawless so are the part 1 and 2. Can't wat for the next chapter, I consider the 90's maiden way more interesting than 80's maiden, all they went thru: lineup changes, being relevant even thou the music in that period of time were going thru big changes and metal was down under in people's taste... What I mean is that the 90's got all the ingredients to produce an outstanding film production and probably the best of the series.
Perhaps the mood of transition is what I loved about Somewhere in Time. Synths were well established by the time of Seventh Son, but they were still a gamble on Somewhere in Time. The sound, the cover and last but not least the fantastic songwriting make it one of the band's two favorite albums. The other is Piece of Mind, which is also totally underrated.
