  • Lake Winnipeg's Paradise Beaches tells the history of the charming cottage communities where Manitobans have flocked for more than a century of enchanted summer months.
It's another beautiful summer's day. A perfect day to head for the beach. Since the turn of the century, when Manitobans first discovered its beauty, they've been flocking to Lake Winnipeg and while some are content to be day-trippers, many built a cottage, their own place at the lake.
Manitobans own more than 12,000 cottages the highest rate in the country. It's were they learned to swim, met new friends, perhaps, where they fell in love. Where they passed two enchanted summer months.
The beach offers delights for every age. Sand castles, the splash of the surf, the ever-changing water. Magnificent sunsets. Walks in the great outdoors. Winnipeg Beach, Gimli, Grand Beach, Victoria Beach. and a dozen more locations scattered on its sandy shore -- for many these are the fondest memories of childhood. Safe delightful summers spent at Manitoba's summer playground. Join us on the south shores of Lake Winnipeg's for a tour of Lake Winnipeg's paradise beaches.

This explains the origin of CP Rail's Winnipeg Beach Subdivision.

@@billdang3953CPR was Canada's pioneer railway. The government owned CNR did not do as well and was since privatised. CPR although taking on government debts was able to pay them off early on and continued to operate purley privately. They now own several lines down into the US. Canadian Pacific is Canada's Railway.

I assume by your comment you do not live in Canada, as 'Public Access T.V." is an American thing. This doc is from a North Dakota PBS station KEFG in Fargo and Grand Forks. That local station uses 'Prairie Public Television' as their motto.

That looks a lot of fun. It's a beach like any other. I would like to compare LW's beach to San Fransicko's beach. The only fun this area provides during the winter is watching the rises/sets of the sun/moon and perhaps ice fishing (if you're in to that).

I literally just digitized a VHS recording of this broadcast from back in the day. I wonder if PBS would be upset if i uploaded it and all of its cable television glory where the run time is the same but half the documentary is removed for pledge rallies and garbage advertisement. Back in the day if you pledged $100 you could own this whole full documentary.

The Icelanders didn't "scrape ashore here". They didn't come from Iceland to Gimli by boat. They took the train from Montreal the same as every other euro-refugee immigrant. It is and always has been all First Nation territory. Ojibwe' on the east shore and Ojibwe' and Lakota on the west. You'd think the guy would know the facts since he is/was an educator. First Nations operate by a different narrative.
