Many years ago while working at the Tabernacle here in Atlanta I had a chance to meet Sonny Emory and watch him play with Earth Wind and Fire!! Not only a fantastic drummer but a really nice guy!!!
That was a drum and percussion masterpiece that took you on a trip down different musical styles, sounds, and vibes. Sonny always plays what he feels, but there is always thought behind what he plays. He's a thinking and musical drummer, a drummer's drummer!
I remember seeing sonny with jean luc ponte in the early 80s. I was expecting rayford who played with Ponte often but when we saw the stage setup sony had his black kit with his name across the bass drum head. Kind of cool for jean luc to ok that. But id never heard a thing about Emory but became an instant fan that night. He was devastating. I was a young drummer myself and thought i was coming into my own and playing and developing well for my age. Sonny was actually just a year or two older than me and he humbled me that night. It was unbelievable. Peace sir Sonny Emory. Very inspirational still.
Creative,Solid ,Precise, funky ,jazzy Rock ,African ensemble , all wrap in one !! In other words A BAD -MAN on them Drums .. i play a little “bit” myself … i see what he’s doing !! Great Solo … MAN !!!
Oh Yeah That Sonny a Bad Dude I go back to his Georgia State Jazz Ensemble Days last time I saw Sonny he was playing along side with Joe Sample at The Fox in ATL he was GREAT that night Also!!!
Sonny Emory is one of those drummers that sound relevant at every decade I've listen to him. Most musicians when they get to a certain age sound outdate. Not the case with Sonny Emory.
The crash above is a Centent and the clap stacks we have are Centent. If you're local to the shop, swing by. If not, send an email to eckert@atlantadrumshop.com and we'll get you squared away.
@@atlantadrumshop I couldn’t tell. In some shots I saw the gloss but in other shots it looked matte black. I actually played the emperor suede heads one time about 10 years ago and love them. I was wondering if you know if the Emperor suede head is going to be warmer than the vintage coated emperor heads? My drum teacher is better at tuning than me and he swears by the vintage emperor heads. I want the warmest head possible with still having tone. Really loud ringing in my ears and when I listen on video I like this suede heads better than the vintage emperor. Thoughts? He swears by the Vintage 😂

All that and he looks relaxed! Thanks Sonny.
Sonny is still one of my favorite drummers. His drums sound excellent. I love that ride cymbal. Amazing!
Polished perfection. A masterful menagerie of ambidextrous genius only he can perform.👑🏆🥇👑

He's 61. Never mind his drumming. What's his fitness and health regimen?
Friends with Billy Cobham.

Amazing. What kind of cymbal is the one with the symbols?
Searched the web for an hour. I can't find it.
He is a Zildjian artist, so, I'm betting a Zildjian. Best I can do. Already wasted far too much time looking into this. You got me good. Peace
That is a CENTENT XTT model with Runic laser engraving. He used it as his primary crash. Email eckert@atlantadrumshop.com if interested.
Thank you very much. That cymbal look unique!!
Do you have all the cymbals Sonny used in stock? I want that clap stick and the one above it

Our favorite head with warmth and tone are the Emperor Renaissance. Our $0.02!
Tell me he doesn't look like Tommy Davidson, Sonny is a bad boy, (no pun intended, not related to P Diddys label)🎼🥁
Uhhhh.....one trick pony with that left hand eh?
