With all respect, Meghan has a point. Catch phrases have power, and to some people "Defund the poice" has certain connotations, whether or not it's fair to interpret that a particular way. Phrasing matters in politics and I see where this could be great fodder for the Trump campaign. If catch phrases weren't important, "Make American Great Again" would have never caught on. Messaging has never been a strong suit of the Democratic Party, and I worry that, inspite of the good intentions, this could bite them in the butt, at least a little.

I’m for the black lives matter movement and suffer from many of the fears other AAs face, and honestly before doing my research, I was thrown off by the phrase “defund the police” too. I get it, I agree but Megan’s absolutely right that if we’re trying to garner more support for our cause maybe using the phrase “reform the police” would be more clear and palatable for the masses. I totally agree about the need to redistribute police funds toward more effective and community based measures but we’ve gotta be smart about our messaging. I’m for the black lives matter movement and suffer from many of the fears other AAs face, and honestly before doing my research, I was thrown off by the phrase “defund the police” too. I get it, I agree but Megan’s absolutely right that if we’re trying to garner more support for our cause maybe using the phrase “reform the police” would be more clear and palatable for the masses. I totally agree about the need to redistribute police funds toward more effective and community based measures but we’ve gotta be smart about our messaging. I mean we’re talking to people who don’t even understand the simple phrase “black lives matter” isn't about black supremacy.
Reform does not mean taking money away from the police and the reallocation of resources. Reform means more money given to them for classes and cameras. We have been reforming the police since the 50s. Its time to defund, if we are not clear about what we want and expect then we will not get what we want. If you want the police defended then say so but don't call it reform in order to make others feel better about it.
By the way they understand what Black lives matter means. They know what they support and don't. We been fighting for the right to be equal and to matter since we were kidnapped and sold in this country.
