The Curious Case of Norm Nixon

- Norm Nixon is one of the most forgotten stars of the NBA in the 1980s. He was a part of the Los Angeles Lakers Showtime era and was one of the first stars to put the Los Angeles Clippers on the NBA map. Just who was “Stormin’ Norman” and what could have been?

This was a great video on my father. Thank You for this.
Thank you for your comment! God bless you and your family!
Stormin Norman is the truth. Respect ✊🏾
Tristan, are you watching Winning Time?
@@SFretnchillin I think the OP is lying about being Norm Nixon's kid. Lol Nixon didn't have a kid by that name. Lol
Weird, that Norm Nixon had two sons named Norman Ellard Nixon Jr and DeVaughn Walter Nixon.
I remember Norm Nixon and Mo Cheeks battling it out during his years with the Lakers. Two very talented and savvy guards, always a great matchup!
Yelp me too!!
@Markus Patients that’s a realist right there. Lol , talk about looking on the brighter side of things!
Stormin' Norman!! I hated to see the Lakers let him go. He was still on his way to a hall of fame career(even with the Clippers) until he blew out his knee.
I always felt Magic was behind Norm getting traded.
The Lakers ended up getting Byron Scott out of the deal though
@@landrewilkinson7993 Jerry West traded Nixon to the Clippers because he claimed it would free up Magic to take over running the offense, and not have to share the ball with Nixon anymore. But I think there was more to it than that like West just not liking Nixon at all.
Nixon had some knee problems, while with the Lakers. When healthy Norm was great. When his knee was giving him trouble he was not effective. Decisions are made, based on what they thought was for the best long term, for the team.
@@arizjones Nope, it was Jerry West and even this video documentary right here tells that story. I mean Norm had an injury to his knee that was cartilage-related, but he still played like an All-Pro even making All-Pro after that injury. This decision was made based on West being an ass that had a hard-on for Nixon, Magic also played a part and it just all came down to him and West wanting Nixon gone. I mean any time you hire a private investigator to follow Norm Nixon around to see if he's doing cocaine. Lol Jerry West was one of a kind! Lol I see why he's depicted on that HBO Max show like he is, the guy playing him is funny as hell, should win an Emmy. Lol
Nice piece on Norm. I've been a Laker fan since '65, so I'm very familiar with Norm. I remember being pissed when he was traded. And because of that, never truly accepted Byron Scott. One Stat you overlooked about Norm, he actually lead the team in scoring (w/ Kareem) w/ 20.4 ppg (& 8.1 apg) during the '81-'82 postseason championship run. His 2nd w/ the Lakers. Still to this day, one of my favorite all-time Lakers. Thanks for the memories.
Not a Laker fan but i remember Norm Nixon. I used to be a Blazer fan so i 1st saw him in his rookie yr. To me he sometimes struggled against some of the great guards(at that time) early in his career. But when they got Magic, his career really blossomed. A key figure in those early Showtime championships(1980&1982). Hated to see him get traded for Byron Scott. To show how great he was, he actually made the Clippers competitive. When he blew his knee, he was never the same and the Clips fell off rapidly. Great player though...a lot of younger basketball fans(under 40) never heard of him.
I no was going to point that out about Nixon’s playoff performance that ‘82 run. He was the real MVP that playoffs. Media hype gave it to Magic
@@elwin38 I did hear of Nixon he also got mixed up in all that Watergate mess.
Jerry West seemed to be the culprit in Norm's career, he seemed to despise the man for whatever idiotic reasons. He constantly chides the man while coaching him when he was the Lakers head coach, and Norm didn't take well to him either, shit, I wouldn't too if he was riding me like that. But then he trades Nixon when he becomes Lakers GM, the asshole.
I was highly pissed when the Lakers traded Norm Nixon to the sorry, always-coming-in-last-place San Diego Clippers. Nixon was traded in October (his birthday month) of 1983. It took me four years to accept Byron Scott who never showed up in the Finals against Boston Celtics. The ghost in the Garden kept Scott in check.
Nixon SHOULD be a Hall of Famer. The Showtime offense doesn't click in 1980 or 82 without Nixon.
Unbelievably quick in both mind and body, there was nobody who could keep up with him on the court.
His first 2 seasona with the Clippers were phenomenal. How he averaged 11 assists on a Clippers team that only really had Terry Cummings in his prime is one od the great accomplishments in NBA history.
I was at Duquesne in 1974 for four months. I was fortunate to hang out with Norm for that period as I tried to walk on the team. I didn’t succeed and left in disappointment, but I will never forget our one on one games, and the way he embraced me during that time. He was a down to earth dude, that was a tremendous talent! He later married star Debbie Allen, and enjoyed a successful though abbreviated NBA career. I think he did all right!
When you had Magic AND Nixon both running the showtime fast break…..it was a thing of beauty.
Real talk. I remember watching them playing against Seattle in the playoffs Magic's rookie year. It was my first time seeing them running the break. And it was just how you described it. That was the day I became a Laker fan. Magic had a team of greyhounds that could run the floor. They would run off made baskets. Magic would be rushing the refs for the ball. I never forget watching game one of the western conference finals with a house full of sixer fan. The Lakers were down 9 and in a matter of seconds were up 16.All the sixer fan's mouth were hanging open. I said I told y'all. 🏀🤭
Definitely a GREAT basketball player, Norm Nixon! Yes he was ahead of his time. I hope he knows that he can go to his grave knowing that he was one of the greats.
?, he ain't dead though
@@jamaali2358 Bryan Tipton didn't say he was dead 😂😂😂
Sterling bought the Clippers for $12.5 million? I think he sold the team to Steve Ballmer for $1.4 billion. Quite the return on investment.
Who would expect anything less. He was notoriously cheap. The league was battling bankruptcy when Donald bought the San Diego Clippers for $12.5 million. The NBA was a global powerhouse when he was forced to sell the Los Angeles Clippers for $2 Billion. He moved the team without NBA approval in the 80s and won a lawsuit against the league to stay in LA. That move doubled the value of the team. Still he’s no Steve Ballmer.
2 billion he got 1 billion and his wife got 1 billion
@@damonjohnson7044 facts
@@damonjohnson7044 still hit a lick tho
Norm didn't know he was playing for the Ultimate Racists back then. SMH
This 4th of July weekend, talking to some younger Lakers fans, I informed them of Norm Nixon. He has career stats for points and steals per game that rate amongst some of best in his era. Underated.
Chick Hearn use to say Norm was quicker than a wink!
As a child I used to listen to Duquesne University basketball on the radio in Pittsburgh. My stepfather went to law school there. He was the man for sure. Maybe my first basketball "hero".
I was a kid coming up in CA between 1977-84. Us shorties would wear Norm's #10 Laker and Clipper jerseys. We didn't hear the media vitriol back then. So my memories of Stormin Norm Nixon were exactly like the videos you shared. He was a consistent highlight reel for shorter NBA players. Great Video!!
What is a shorty? Never did understand that dumb word
@@mitchelll3879 anybody shorter than the average person, or a kid.
This was my dad’s favorite player respect!
Norm Nixon, genuine, nice approachable. I live in Los Angeles. I have encountered him on several occasions and it's always the same. It's almost as if you've known him for years and on a personal level. I appreciated his College and professional career and I appreciate him even more as a regular guy when we're handling our banking needs!! Norm Nixon, "A Real One"!!!!
Norm was my favorite player before Magic came to the 80's. Norm and Gus Williams are the most underrated and forgotten players in NBA history.
Fastest PG the Lakers ever drafted. Only knock on him was that he enjoyed the nightlife a little too much during his prime, lol. Still was able to help the Lakers cash in two titles back then. I can understand why he had to be traded, but they should've waited until after the 1983-84 season to do it. His absence was SORELY felt in that championship series against the Celtics, who were able to squeeze past them in 7 games due to cranking up the psychological warfare on the younger backcourt of Magic and Scott. He along with Bob McAdoo are the ones on my short list of Laker greats who should have their numbers retired at Staples at some point down the road, they were really THAT DAMN GOOD!
>;-)
I agree. He was trade bait for the Clippers. The Clips drafted Byron Scott then traded him for Norm.
I concour wit’ everything except the nightlife comment. He had control of it. Did not effect his play. May have left room for innuendos, but not his play.
As a longtime Celtics fan, I definitely agree about 83-84. Tragic, I mean Magic, 😘had a rough series. That is what Magic and West got since they both wanted Norm gone. Hell, no one was beating Philly in 82-83. I think it was during this season wherein Magic got hurt for a time and Norm ran the show. I remember Magic commenting that when he got back no one was listening to him and he was the point. I believe he ran to the front office and stated there wasn’t room for two PGs. That is all old cantankerous Jerry needed to hear to get rid of Norm who he never liked. I always thought Norm made the Lakers invincible because you essentially had two PGs on the floor at the same time. The two could have cohabitated both Magic and Norm. I never was a Scott fan.
@@ronsworld250 what makes u believe he did that? Because someone wrote it in a book. Because @ that point he knew if he did something like that he would be the one that got traded. So that don’t make sense, unless he had a “trade wish”.
@@Sstraw10 I am not sure who you are referring to when you are commenting on 'he.' If by 'he' you mean Magic, yes there is a video out on YT where Magic actually stated this back in 82ish, 83 about the team not listening to him and that not going to work since he was the PG. Magic stated that they couldn't listen to two voices. Magic was drafted #1 and loved by Buss, RIP, and West, so he knew he wasn't going to be traded. It was no secret that West did not like Norm. I had no idea the bitterness by West towards Norm went that deep as explained in Stray's solid video.
I will always contend that the Lakers beat the Celts in 85 because Cornbread's injury was a major factor and he being out of shape hurt the team that year. Red and the rest of the team was P'od big time w/Cedric. That damn 2-3-2 format change screwed the Celts out of a 3-peat, too. They should have been champs in 84, 85, and 86. Now, 87 they had no business beating Motown in the Eastern Conf finals. The team was old and Walton and McHale's injuries doomed the team. Another factor that really killed the Celts was the untimely death of Len Bias. Working Len into the mix w/his athleticism and ever evolving game would have taken a huge load off of the aging vets.
This Was A Nice Piece Norm Nixon Was 1 Of Tha Most Underrated Players That I Ever Saw
His wife Debbie Allen makes sure he isn't underrated 🥰💛💜💚❤️💙
Stratty, thank you for this video. You did your research well!
I’m just a few years younger than Norm Nixon and grew up as a Laker fan back when I thought he came from “Dew-kess-knee” University. Way before cell phones and Google existed.
Nixon had a tight dribble, on a string, no palming like all of today’s players. His change of pace and crossover were killers.
And to hear the “Three Musketeers” again, your video made my day!
Please make more to highlight players who have been forgotten.
“Sweet Lou” Hudson - I even forgot he was once a Laker.
And Adrian Dantley was a young buck, had a great college career, had more of an outside game then compared w his Jazz days of backing you down w his big behind.
Norm Nixon was one of my favorite Lakers. I did not know about the dislike and mistreatment that Jerry West had directed at Nixon. That's a real shame. Byron Scott was not given any love from me until several years after he became a Laker. This was out of loyalty to Nixon. I never understood why the Lakers traded him away. Byron Scott became such a key part of those championship teams that I finally grew very fond of him. This video reminded me of another great guard whose career was cut even shorter by a knee injury, and who was a Laker briefly as a player then a long career as a scout for the team. I'd love to see a great video of the career of Ronnie Lester, who played his best games as an Iowa Hawk, leading the Hawks to the Final Four, and an injury to his already bum knee took the air out of Iowa's chances for a National Championship. Despite the injury Lester was chosen with the 10th pick in the 1980 NBA draft. His final season as a player was with the LA Lakers on that 1985 Championship team. Then he became a front office employee as a scout and eventually he was the assistant GM. Ronnie Lester was the only Laker executive to see Kobe Bryant play live as a high school player and he urged Jerry West to check out Kobe. His playing career was inspiring and seemingly forgotten. I'd love to see a video focusing on Ronnie Lester.
Byron Scott was 6 years younger and was automatic from the wing
Norm Nixon is the reason I wore #10. I wore it from the 7th grade until I stopped playing competitive basketball altogether. I'm almost 50 now.
Enjoyed it! Loved Nixon and his game. Coming from a Trail Blazers fan.
redfanrod thanks! Checkout my Pippen video if you get the chance, it covers his time with the Blazers pretty extensively
I really appreciate all of Your comments from long before The HBO series dropped
Especially the video itself. Good Stuff 👍🏿
To me, he was a real star! At that time I was so angry that he had been traded!
Storman Norman was cold blooded! Hi throwing lobs to Coop or dishing it to Silk was a thing to see! I always tell my nephews and my younger friend's about The Showtime Era. That was Basketball at it's best!
A very nice profile of a forgotten NBA legend.
Norm was and has always been my favorite player
If Norm Nixon didn`t get traded I believe he would've been a Lakers Great. And the Lakers would've definitely beat the Boston Celtics in the 1984 Champonship, if Norman Nixon was there.
Absolutely correct. Dennis Johnson turned up the pressure, Magic was the the only capable ball handler. Nixon would have helped BIGTIME
I disagree. They were better with Scott from the get go.
I thought I knew a lot about Laker history, but you gave a lot of good information there. Some of it I was unaware of. Thanks for the great journalism
The Nixon-Magic backcourt was really problematic for opposing defenses because of the unique skill sets of the two. If Nixon was bringing the ball up, he had the quickness to get around virtually any defender and either take it to the basket himself or lay it off to a teammate. Magic, by contrast, was one of the few guards who could take the ball right to the basket, and if he did happen to miss, with his size he could easily tap it back in.
I think it's also a reflection of the professionalism of both men that they were able to make the on-court dynamic work even if there were some clashes of egos off the court. That's the true definition of teamwork. You don't have to necessarily get along personally, but when you're on the court you put that aside and make sure the ball's going to the right people in the right places.
Unrated and almost forgotten player. He was one of my favorite Lakers during his brief stint with the team - very quick and athletic. He, not Magic was the boss of the locker room.
He was a little bit, before my time, but I seen him play in old games on tape. He looked like a HELL of a ballplayer.
@@briancarter2847 In any other situation being the focal point he's first ballot hall of fame. One of the greatest ever all around guards to EVER lace em up.
Definitely not Magic, but you cool with boss of the LOCKER ROOM 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂🤣

Great video my friend, I really enjoyed it. I always respected Norm's game and from my perspective he a had a vey solid and respectable NBA career. Also, inn my humble opinion he is underated...
Great video bro
Great work and very informative, I watched & admired Norm Nixon as a basketball player and never really understood what derailed his career until now, thanks for your outstanding post!
Thanks for the video, it was very informative. I've always been a fan of Norm's.
A longtime Celts fan and yes Norm Nixon was a great player and a key member of those early Showtime Lakers’ teams. Jerry West, as another poster stated, I will keep my comments to myself regarding the ‘logo.’ I hated seeing him traded to Clippers. Norm once stated that the Lakers could have possessed one of the best backcourts ever in he and Magic.
Always felt Celtics lucked out not having to face Norm Nixon during the 80s contests vs each other.
@@Sstraw10 Especially, 83-84. That was the series where the LA papers referred to Magic as ‘Tragic Johnson.’ Norm would have in all likelihood, calmed the waters at point for Magic. But Magic and West both wanted Norm gone.
Great tribute guy to an ALL TIME GREAT PLAYER. Long overdue he gets acknowledged in this new Era for his greatness as a player.
Norm Nixon was actually the FIRST nba player that I started following in the early 80s “I was a huge college fan” but after Lakers traded him to San Diego “i began to root for the clippers” even till this day, ESP whenever they play the Lakers.
The Lakers have had many all stars over the years such as Kareem Elgin Baylor Jerry West Gail Goodrich Jamaal Wilkes Norm Nixon and many more.
The BEST team in NBA history!
Norm was, IMHO, the Best Pure Point-Guard the Lakers ever had. Magic Reinvented the Point Position but Norm was a Better All Around Point.
Delusional
This has to be Devaughn or Norm Jr💯😂😂😂
Uh. Norm was very good but that statement is really not even remotely true

I ask this in all sincerity and with no disrespect but why is Maurice Cheeks in the HOF and not Norman Nixon? Compare their stats. Compare their winning records. Insanely unjust IMHO.

Great job with your research and video.
Norm is in my age group so I remember him well.
I think your production is a fair and balanced look at Nixon the player and person. It gives some credible background to the portrayal of him on the recent Lakers cable series on HBO. Thanks.
Also I would like to see you do deep dive into David Thompson. His life and career is just as interesting as Norm's.
So when Norm was traded to the Clippers, the story at the time was that it was a result of the 83 Finals (in which LA was swept by Philly), i.e., that Norm wasn't solid enough defensively, and that LA needed a more physical guard to compete with the backcourt of Cheeks, Toney, and Richardson.
Norm always had his way with Cheeks. He scored 26pts in Gm1 of the ‘83 finals. I’m Gm 2 he got hurt colliding into Andrew Toney scrambling for a loose ball. After that he was done for the series. U see he came back strong as ever the next couple of season with the Clippers
@@Sstraw10 Well, he was a pure point guard so it didn't make much sense for LA to have two. I think LAL were better with Scott and LAC were better with Norm.
@@uncletony6210 They played 4 seasons together. Won 2 chips. Yea not lost when one was hurt. It was working. Magic was the defensive liability. How u 6’8” with the ultimate height advantage & still a liability on defense? Byron Scott? Sure looked like Tom Hardaway & Kevin Johnson was having their way wit’ him. See part of defense is bein’ able to attack your man offensively. Norm would do that to wear ‘em down - Scott did not do that.
@@Sstraw10 We needed an outside shooter and Scott was better from distance than Norm. We also needed a physical guard (how do you think Norm would have fared guarding MJ?). KJ and TH were too quick for Scott, but they came later, i.e., when Norm was already out of the league...
@@Sstraw10 do you think LA wins chips in 85, 87, and 88 with Nixon instead of Scott?

I didn't know Jerry West had a beef with him. This knowledge brought down my view of West who I previously thought of as a stand up person
And now his own son is portraying him in an HBO series about the Lakers. How cool is that?

I was a Laker fan starting from the mid 70s, and Norm was before Magic my favorite player. I liked Kareem, of course, but I was not so tall. I even had a Norm Nixon 10 t-shirt made and put it on my dog (I was ten years old at the time).
Norm broke down the defense better than Magic too. Plus, he was a very reliable shooter.

He’s being remembered now in the HBO Series Winning Time. However what it doesn’t acknowledge is of how he stole his nickname.😄 It was from Midland, Pennsylvania’s Original “Stormin Norman” Van Lier of the Cincinnati Royals and Chicago Bulls. It was when Nixon played his College ball back then in Pittsburg. Young people today don’t realize that Stromin Norm Van Lier Lead the NBA in Assist in 1970-71 Over Oscar Robertson(while playing with him) and Jerry West. Sadly he still doesn’t have his #2 Retired by the Bulls. Why?🙄
Because Van Lier had ONE bright season and is a forgettable character. That’s why his number isn’t retired and nobody remembers him.
@@taharqa332 People whom don’t know💩about someone or something shouldn’t leave comments. VanLier was a 3x NBA All-Star and All-NBA. 8x NBA All-Defensive Team. So STFU kid! You still have Similac on your breath.🤣

@@bballerforever Thanks. I lived that history. Back in the day when the Bulls were in the Western Conference. VanLier once said that guarding Gail Goodrich was the hardest player for him to guard in the league. Goodrich would take him through so many picks, that he never had the strength to even go out for dinner after their games.😂 It’s a way different game today.
Stormin’ Norman was a beast! I’m glad I got to see him play his entire career. This 16:39 video doesn’t show how great he really was.

Stormin’ Norman Nixon was my favorite Lakers player growing up in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Both of his sons are actors.. one is even playing Norm in the HBO series about the Lakers

Your right I remember him he was awesome with magic ; Michael Cooper in three guard offense.
Norm Nixon played high-school for South West Macon, Ga. One of the greatest high-school teams of all -time.
Nixon's FG% was .483. That is HUGE for a guard. In his second season with the Lakers, he averaged .542. That is in another world. Norm Nixon won't go to Springfield, but he was a terrific player who never got his due.
Stormin' Norman Nixon!!! Underrated!!!
Nice soundtrack choice man. Back in the days by ahmad
The Spurs played the Lakers I saw Norm Nixon practicing in the Hemisfair Arena as a kid. I almost got his autograph. He told me in a professional way that he couldn't give me an autograph. He was preparing for the game against the Spurs.
Norm Nixon , Jamal Wilkes and Adrian Dantley were my favorite Lakers in the mid 70s. I was upset when Norm Nixon was dealt away. His game wasn't all that different than Byron Scotts.
Sure it was. Scott was a pure shooting guard while Nixon had elite point guard skills. Nixon was the far better player overall. Riley always wanted a Rolando Blackman type shooting guard. I think they saw that in Byron, but he never quite lived up to their hopes.
Great piece
You forgot to mention he starred in The Fish Who Saved Pittsburgh.
His son plays him in the new Lakers documentary on HBO.
He's Debbie Allen's husband right?
Yeah yeah tell us something we don't know
Although Norm was part of that killer L.A. team intro, he didn’t really “star” in “The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh.” It was more like a brief cameo at the very end (along with Kareem, Connie Hawkins and Lou Hudson). Debbie Allen actually had more of a memorable role as the hilariously sassy groupie, in my opinion. I wonder if that’s where her & Norm first met.
I remember the days when "Stormin Norman" was blasting up and down the court for those Laker teams. He was one of our favorite players. His court speed was really impressive. Upon hearing the news that Nixon had been traded, Jack Nicholson himself was quoted as saying: "I'm wearing black." We all did, Jack. Except for Jerry West apparently.
After watching Winning Time this added some good perspective since the show, while entertaining, takes liberties with the story.
I remember him as Stormin’ Norman Nixon!!! One of my favorite!!!
Great Video !!!
Was you using love TKO instrumental or back in the day instrumental??? Great video cool Ness 😎
Mannn, I hated the news of his trade. There were times he was unguardable on the floor. Him, Magic, and Kareem made the Lakers the best passing team in the league. They were a joy to watch.
Norm was the quickest player I've ever seen. For some reason, the Lakers traded him to San Diego.
I forget, overlook Stormin Norman's contribution in Magic's arrival. He got in Ervs way. I was glad when he got gone. We didn't miss him one bit.
