@@I_AM_NUM_3 He absolutely did not conquer Ba Sing Se. That was a very important part of his story and moral development. The fact that he failed to do that and his son died shaped him into the good, wise person he became.
Overdose Actually that's incorrect. There's a reason why strongmen keep some chub. If you burn your fat, that body is going to start eating up your muscle.
I would also like to mention Iroh's mental discipline. Iroh was imprisoned after being betrayed by his family and his country and needed to become the dragon of the west again if he was going to save his nephew, but he was locked away in a prison, which looked like it provided conditions that were not exactly up to modern day standards; we never saw him go outside, he only ate a bowl of rice and the occasional fruit, and he made it a point to appear as a fat old man who was being broken down so he could trick the guards. He was constantly under stress mentally thanks to poor diet, poor conditions, the need to keep up a façade, fears over what was happening to his nephew and the anxiety of his impending escape plan and stress can make it more difficult to stick to an exercise routine. But because of Iroh's military training, the techniques and training required to be a high level fire bender, and his general mental state he was able to stay laser focused that entire time even to the point of being able to retain the skill and techniques required to do the advanced routines and being able to retain the combat and bending skills he would have used for his escape, which later on one of the surviving guards describe as something badass like "a force of nature."
Nice, but to counter a few things. When you have literally nothing else to do it can make it easier to exercise (ie: he had no books, and far as we saw save one nice guard on I'd assume very small occasions no one to talk to) it can make it easier to work out. Also while stress and depression can make it hard to exercise, depending on the person and circumstances it can also make it easier to work out. Think of it IRL: Someone gets bullied and that can drive them to mope at home and do nothing, or it can drive them to workout and better themselves to try to end the bullying. Also if his diet was low enough in calories or sporadic enough in times he was fed, he could easily have been in a constant fasting state (or at least constantly in ketosis) which would have also helped speed up how quickly his body went through his fat stores which he had.
No worries, he had enough fat reserves to help. While we see them as unnecessary in today’s society, once you’re stressed out in the jungle, they start to show themselves and their real value.
Leaves from the vine, Falling so slow, Like fragile tiny shells, Drifting from the foam, Little solider boy, Comes marching homes, Brave solider boy, Comes marching home. RIP Uncle Iroh, may you live a good life in heaven.
Azri Azhari Wo, wo, wo, uncle iroh was never a character that could ever be described as boring. Almost, if any, no one in ATLA can be called a boring character.
For muscle memory, my brother had a really bad health issue (lungs and digestive tract). He went from a buff monster to a skeleton. After 2 years, my brother started doing exercise again, and he's already back to 70% what he once was, he may never be 100% but he's already damn close.
Muscle memory is really something. I recently lost five kilograms out of ten I gained since I started training due to an intoxication. Since I started training again progress in the weight I lift, the reps I can do, and the intensity of my workouts is made week by week, when not from training session to the next. I feel like I'm in a movie training montage. I wish I gained muscle and strength as fast as this when I first started
Personally I don't think Iroh ever really lost most of his muscle mass, he seemed disciplined and powerful far before his prison workout. I think the main purpose of his workout was to lose weight as well as to tone his muscles. It's like the difference between servicing an old busted BMW and souping up a new mini cooper, the BMW always had the power under the hood, it just needed work to bring it back to optimum condition.
Agree. I was looking through the comments for this. Iroh already had a lot of muscle mass, it was just hidden under a lot of fat. It is at least 10x faster to lose 20 lbs of fat than to gain 20 lbs of muscle. It is virtually impossible to gain 100lbs of muscle as an adult (let alone an old man) but definitely possible to cut 100 lbs of muscle (though not in 2 months). And you'd be amazed what a little fat loss can do in aesthetics. Basically, look at any large body builder from off season to in season. They can gain and lose 30-40 lbs.
choreomaniac I'm going to pretend like I know anything about cars so that I can agree with this. But aside from the car park, I absolutely agree with what you're saying and as much as I always figured uncle iroh had a crap ton of muscle just hidden under a layer of fat. It's like that dad that you see who you *_know_* used to box back in the day, and that even though he's chunky he can still knock you flat on your ass.
He had more food than the usual prisoner btw. His friends on inside(at least one girl guard as I remember?) were bringing him additional rations. That apple he's eating while doing his routine is part of them. Of course, if I recall everything correctly.
Lots of protein and carbs. Say what you want about carbs but shit works if you stay active. I did 4 years a few years back went in 250 and like 35% barely doing 15 pushups and came out 190 doing 80 reps and around 1200 a day. Bench went from 185 to 305. Of course several years later I'm back to 250 cause... pizza and beer are the shit but hey I can hit 315. Which aint much for that kind of body weight but hell pushing 40 now. Dat Roy Nelson school of fitness haha.

xxangelsofchaosxx Right? I really love Naruto but I have been rewatching the show and it’s full of bad decisions and plot wholes. I still think it’s a good show, because it makes me feel like hardly any other show can, but it does have flaws. Lots of them.
In real life context, this also has merit in context of POW training. So those in the military are advised to keep in shape if possible when captured. So that whole thing in the cartoon doesn't come out of nowhere, it has some basis in actual practice.
It's also noteworthy that Iroh had been being snuck extra food by one of the female guards who took pity on him. So it's likely he would have had an even easier time bulking up than most priosners
I rarely comment on videos but this video was so beautifully done. You address so many aspects of science that so many people take for granted when it comes to health and fitness. You are so full of intellect and wisdom. Thank you so much for this amazing video.
So Back in April I made this video for Uncle Iroh & It was doing well, got up 80k views but it was taken down for Stupid reasons, I reuploaded it a month later & it stayed at 20k views for months until September it shot up & Just now HIT 1million! BOOYAH IM HONORED it came back and THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!
Iroh is the GOAT and so is this channel. I love this Would That Workout so much. People be sleeping on Iroh thinking he’s just a wise old man but nah, he’s a MONSTER
One of the things I always thought was interesting is that I don't think Iroh used firebending to escape his cell. When you look back at the scene when it shows the destroyed cage, *IT WASN'T MELTED* It's my personal fan theory that Iroh *RIPPED* through the bars with his bare hands during the Black Sun when he wouldn't have his bending.
He's a sage. He was storing energy on his belly to burn it all up in case he got caught. It was not only slobness. By the way, sarcopenia is worse on old people that grew senile. Uncle Iroh was always honing his mind and always using his bohemian knowledge to always eat well and keep sharp, he had a killer belly but it doesn't mean he may have stopped physical activites all together. Conclusion: sarcopenia would not affect him as much because he is definitely not senile. And if I remember well, there is another type of -penia that is about loss of fat and power in general (forgot the name and can't find now), that is the reason why old people are always cold. Maybe Iroh maintained the belly to protect himself from this Very informative video though, me like
Knowing Iroh’s love for tea can reveal that he does take breaks. The way he prepares his tea signifies himself where he does not rush but delicately prepares the ingredients to get the most taste out of it.
Very cool! I first saw Avatar about 12 years ago when I was in my 40s! Excellent show! And longer ago than that, I knew a couple of guys who had been locked up and I can vouch for all the prison workout stuff! (I was never there, thank God!)
The nuclei growth explains how Everytime I take a break from working out, it's like I ascend with a ssj stage and absorb the ki into my system that enhances my basic strength.
Hey, do you know why it got taken down? In my experience with my videos, I've noticed if you have more than 15 seconds of unedited continuous footage from Avatar, it will be blocked. This is regardless of whether the audio is there or not. I don't know if that was the problem but, I thought I'd let you know! I make videos about Avatar, we should collaborate sometime!
"Uncle? I didn't see you get hit by the tongue." "Shh.." Forgot about that line. That's one of the reasons we love Iroh so much. Doing my part to spread the love. Subscribed and rang the bell.
Zuko. Superpowers are not everything. Remember Stain, that's Zuko but with Fire MANIPULATION AND CREATION UNlike Todorikis creation of fire as far as we know. Fire side will be bad choice and Ice... We have seen how it worked with Stain
Well zuko can dodge Azula's "instant" lightning so and can react or dodge so his combat and reaction speed is lightning level I don't know about shoto cause I only got to like s1 ep 5 of MHA but I doubt he's that fast.
In a fire fight Zuko. If it’s both I think he’d lose at first but I think he is a more resourceful fighter and is used to fighting many different types of people with different bending. I think Zuko could beat him
I worked in a prison, as a kitchen supervisor. Here in the U.S. they get a balanced diet, far from a crap or bad diet. Granted it's not ideal for body building, but it's not a bad diet either.
@@Feriin Not a lot of distractions in prison..When the lights go out, an average prisoner can't exactly stay up late, dicking around on cellphones or computers. Not much to do besides sleep. As for access to alcohol, it's a matter of connections and all that, but it's definitely not as easy as hopping over to a bar or liquor store, though I suppose it depends on which prison and their security standards. But even with all that, bulking up would still be a matter of discipline, and a man like Iroh definitely has the right kind of discipline.
Yes! I noticed how different it is now that I'm an adult. I watched it as it came out but I just finished it again last month. I found how much I didn't understand back then and can really appreciate the story and character development now. Good video
Not going to lie, the Iroh Prison Workout video is my favorite video of yours. It was what got me back into wanting to exercise. That, and the fact that not only is Iroh my favorite character of Avatar, but his becoming a beast during season three is a very kickass moment in the show. Keep being awesome, my friend!
I think what had me like iroh is that he was just so well rounded... an elite fire bender ... created lightening bending... so kind and really understands the nature of the earth
Last year before it started snowing too heavily I was taking morning walks, partly to hit a local pokestop and partly to start up a good habit, or try to, and I noticed that muscle memory effect as I started it up again, granted I did hit some rather nasty pain during one but that's due to the sandals I was wearing at the time ,the support in those stupid things is just gone, so that's more of a footwear problem.
Because of Iroh's military training, the techniques and training required to be a high level fire bender, and his general mental state he was able to stay laser-focused that entire time even to the point of being able to retain the skill and techniques required to do the advanced routines and being able to retain the combat and bending skills he would have used for his escape, which later on one of the surviving guards describe as something badass like "a force of nature."
This was in my recommended and I was expecting a MatPat clone to pop up and start breaking down the calories in each bowl by measuring the size of the bowl down to the individual grains of rice and and then figuring out the exact amount of each exercise he did based off of how quickly he did them on screen. Instead I got a buff anime nerd explaining it from the perspective of a bodybuilder. Would definitely of enjoyed a more scientific and in depth look at it but still a enjoyable video, good job
*EVERY SINGLE DAY* sorry but that made me crack up when I heard it. Shame the old video was taken down but nice to see the remaster. Thanks greatly for staying on top of that Jax
I have the upmost respect for you Jax. Taking your passion for fitness sciences and combining it with your interest in anime is not something easy to do. You’ve earned yourself another subscriber. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your future projects.
hey JaxBlade i want to say thank you i have been working out for 3 weeks now and i have been doing the attack on titan Mikasa workout and i have lost 19 lbs so far, i have a long way to go still but i would like to thank you as i have also been changing my diet and reading danberu nan kiro moteru, which has helped out in addition to the videos you are putting out. i am looking at changing up my weekly exercises to focus more on calisthenics and cardio any suggestions? but thanks for the videos, inspiration, and fitness and diet information and keep up the great work.
I've been doing his Saitama workout, myself. Specifically the circuit styled variation with jogging on opposing days. It's been working pretty well for me, might be worth looking at if you wanna try something simple but... well, it works fairly intense with me. Maybe I'm just wore off than I thought. Or maybe it's that awesome. Take your favorite option!
Honestly the best thing about Uncle Iroh in my opinion is the fact that he's literally no one's enemy. He's always like Saitama, just vibin' there with both the protagonists and antagonists all in the same scene, and never doing more than he needs to. Not even Azula or Ozai really hate him. Sure, with the few lines she says to him, they're not really all that spiteful or out of hate. Even Katara and Sokka are chill with him. There's just not a single bad thing to say about him. In fact, he couldn't even get cancelled on Twitter because of how godly he is. Bless Iroh.
When I was seven I HATED avatar but when I turned 12 I enjoyed it so much that when I watched the last episode of Kora I was mad I'd never see it again
I'm not really into cartoons but avatar the last airbender is my favorite show of all time the story just gets better and better and I'm 20 now and like you said now that I'm older I can appreciate it so much more than when I was a kid!! Thankyou for making this video it brings me back to the good old days!!!

Maybe Iroh maintained the belly to protect himself from this
Very informative video though, me like
“This takes like hot lead juice!”
“THAT’S WHAT TEA IS!”
"I can't believe a member of my own family would say something so horrible!!"
Not going to lie, you actually talked the science about this, and I like that.
Knowing Iroh’s love for tea can reveal that he does take breaks. The way he prepares his tea signifies himself where he does not rush but delicately prepares the ingredients to get the most taste out of it.
Rewatching for support
He is goals. I love Iroh, he was like an uncle i never had.
If this gets taken down again we riot.
It's said that Iroh is more powerful than Ozai. One of his quotes I remembered most is "a man needs his rest"
How bout no
Dhairya Patel how bout yes
No

"Uncle? I didn't see you get hit by the tongue." "Shh.." Forgot about that line. That's one of the reasons we love Iroh so much. Doing my part to spread the love. Subscribed and rang the bell.
Now that we're stuck inside, time to get our uncle Iroh on
I like how he played Leaves From the Vine. The song Iroh sang when celebrating his dead son’s birthday.
Irohs prison workout is easier than Bane's solitary confinement workout 😂
It's a bit back breaking though ;)

In your honest opinion who do think would win in a fight between Todoroki and Zuko
James Stewart I’d say Todoroki unless Zuko gets him with the lightning when he least expects it.
Turderokieh wins

The general lack of over size portions , alcohol and forced sleep patterns actually help
SantomPH - What's funny here is you think there's no access to alcohol and that sleep is forced on them...
@@rd3299 Lol, lights never go out in a prison. Trust me, i worked in one for a while.
@@Feriin Mm. I was just tryna make a point to the other guy. I shoulda worded it better. My bad.
When Uncle Iroh said "A man needs his rest." It helped me to stay focus on sleeping more adequately, and not staying up to train more. Thanks Uncle.
Old one:boutta hit 100k
This one a year later: 1.9 MILLION

Jenna Marie good idea
never thought someone would've factored in that a animated character has a pump LMAO
I'm here reupload or not

This is the first video of yours I've even seen, and I'm super impressed by both your depth and research knowledge.
Yes! I noticed how different it is now that I'm an adult. I watched it as it came out but I just finished it again last month. I found how much I didn't understand back then and can really appreciate the story and character development now. Good video
This video was timely. It wasn't recommended to me, I actually looked it up. Biggest help
Imagine if iroh was a school teacher imagine how much we would learn
Not going to lie, the Iroh Prison Workout video is my favorite video of yours. It was what got me back into wanting to exercise. That, and the fact that not only is Iroh my favorite character of Avatar, but his becoming a beast during season three is a very kickass moment in the show. Keep being awesome, my friend!

I love how passionate you are about this
Killed me with "Leaves from the Vine" in the background.
How could you. T - T
I think what had me like iroh is that he was just so well rounded... an elite fire bender ... created lightening bending... so kind and really understands the nature of the earth
There is no grown man that can stands "lives from the vine" scene, unshaken.
this video is waaaaaaay better than i expected. Nice job man
Last year before it started snowing too heavily I was taking morning walks, partly to hit a local pokestop and partly to start up a good habit, or try to, and I noticed that muscle memory effect as I started it up again, granted I did hit some rather nasty pain during one but that's due to the sandals I was wearing at the time ,the support in those stupid things is just gone, so that's more of a footwear problem.
A couple of years ago for Christmas, my mom got me the complete series and I watched it 3 times in like 3 days
The entire show is 26 hours long though. Did you pause time?!
Love how you take the time to explain things while the pics pop up as you talk about them
Tbh I needed this today
Sir, you are my hero. You've seamlessly blended Avatar and muscle physiology into an enjoyable, bite-sized, educational video. I salute you.
I love the content of this video, but the "Leaves from the vine" music playing in the background brought me back feels I WAS NOT ready for.
Dude I can’t tell you how much I agree with your more! Really appreciate your videos!
I know this is late and you only wanted 100k but congrats on the 1.5million views
Justin Weber thanks I'll try that one
omg uncle Iroh brought me to this video and this channel that explains exercise biology. I'm so happy!
I got goosebumps and tears just by looking at the tree iroh was under in ba-sing-se oh man
Step 1. Try not to cry
Step 2. Curl into a ball
Step 3. Cry a lot
New favorite channel! Thanks dude! Stay awesome!
Bless Iroh.
Your channel is pretty badass, I appreciate the time you take to test the workouts for each character
4:20 The wise words of Iroh
Not sure if you get this often, but I appreciate the "skip to" caption! New viewer, now new subscriber. Great production/voiceovers 👍🏻😁
When I was seven I HATED avatar but when I turned 12 I enjoyed it so much that when I watched the last episode of Kora I was mad I'd never see it again
BDN Roleo I hated avatar when I was 12 because it was too emotional and less action lol
That Jason figure in the beginning of the video was sick.
Leaves from the vine playing in the background hits hard ;(
You are the most understanding person I know when it comes to fitness.
Jax: My first upload of this almost got to 100k before it got taken down
Everyone: 1.5 million views
So proud of you for surpassing that goal of 100k and hitting 1M!!!
The videos you make are really well done
Who is still waiting for it to be continued
"Myocells are like Arnold" hahahahah.
there's a reason we never saw Ozai go up against Iroh; cause it would barely even last one frame...
aaand...subscribed! you’re awesome jax don’t ever change!
Thank you!

I'm not really into cartoons but avatar the last airbender is my favorite show of all time the story just gets better and better and I'm 20 now and like you said now that I'm older I can appreciate it so much more than when I was a kid!! Thankyou for making this video it brings me back to the good old days!!!
