    Dawn? Diving in Key West, I was introduced to the baby shampoo and water defog. The DM said it was just a little bit of baby shampoo in water, nowhere near a 50/50 mix. In addition, they didn't rinse it. I would squirt a puddle of it in my mask and just before I get in the water, I dump it out and put the mask on.

    Hey, I don't know if you get it in American, and you'd need to use a bit more, as it wouldn't be as strong as Dawn, but we have Ecover in Ireland, which is ecofriendly (unlike Dawn and most washing up detergents).

    After using many of the commercial solutions out there, baby shampoo 60% diluted in water has been the best. Of course, if I have any residue of sunscreen in my finger, the mask will fog.
    Also when diving in cold water a seasoned instructor told me once to submerge my face in the cold water just to lower the temperature of your face a bit so the difference in temperature of the air in the mask and the external water is not that high, hence allowing less condensation.

    • @LakeHickoryScuba
      @LakeHickoryScuba  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Every year I go up to upstate New York to teach Ice Diving courses, and I do the same thing. I will dip my hand into the freezing cold water and rub it on my face. Not so much for the condensation, because my face is already cold, but more so to wash off any oil that may be on my skin.

    Nice! I went yesterday on a snorkel trip and they sprayed our mask with a solution in a spray bottle just like that, but it was pink and smells like rubbing alcohol, it worked really great for 3 hours of snorkeling no fog, do you have any idea about what that could be in that mix ?

    Great info, but two things would improve it. Show the actual mixing of the soap, baby shampoo and water. Second, spray some steam at the masks (one treated and one untreated lens) to show that the DIY anti fogger works. Of wear the mask with one lens treated and one untreated. When it comes to DIY projects we are all from Missouri - i.e show us, don't just tell us.

    • @LakeHickoryScuba
      @LakeHickoryScuba  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your Welcome, and the main reason we mix the water into the soap, baby shampoo, Dawn, or both, is simply so it will spray easier through the spray bottle.

    • @rgorji
      @rgorji 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you again. What's the reason for adding dawn to the baby shampoo? Why not use one or the other only?

    • @LakeHickoryScuba
      @LakeHickoryScuba  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We add the Dawn as an extra DE-greaser for any silicone that may still be on the lenses from the manufacture. This will also help cut any oils that will accumulate over time from you skin, being that our skin has many pores in it, which produce the oil. With that being said, we cut it with the baby shampoo to help cut down on irritation of the eyes. In the situation that I only had one or the other, they will both work fine on their own. If I had to choose between the two, I would probably go with the baby shampoo for being the most versatile, this of course only after I pre-treated the mask first, with Dawn of course. To close, the baby shampoo can double as a gear wash as well, since it does not create a lot of suds, which can be difficult to get out of wetsuits.

    First I want to say thank you for making this video, I don't want to spend a fortune on anti fog spray. I'm trying to make a mix for my motorcycle helmet but the 50-40-10 mix is definitely too thick. I'm thinking maybe 30 soap, 20 shampoo, 50 water. I went with the first ratio and had to water it down a lot. Thank you though, hope you guys are doing OK during this pandemic.

  • @Daves-Corner
    @Daves-Corner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    There is no way this mixture is 50, 40 10, its too thick and will not go thru sprayer. you can tell whats in your bottle is not that ratio, its too watered down! That being said works great if thinned out a bit with more water. Used on safety glasses just rub some on each lens then let haze a bit and buff clean works great!

    So you added hot water at first but you're expecting this to last you for a long time, does that mean you have to somehow heat up the whole bottle every time or is cold or room temperature is fine after the initial mixture.
