    When stuck in freezing winter conditions warmth is most important. Throw in your kit next to the above mentioned items a pack of tea lights, a few bic lighters, and something to burn the tea lights in (for safety). A few burning tea lights are very good at keeping warmth in your car. Open your window a tiny bit for fresh air and to let moisture out! Add a blanket if you want. An led light at night is visible for miles so if truly stuck, don’t leave your car. They’ll find your car, usually, before they find you…... Add dried food/energy bars.

    WD-40 silicone - make sure you ALSO apply it under the hood rubber trim, in case you need to jump start your car hood will not freeze on frame too. One more tip: there is a TIRE GRIP spray, eBay sells them, you apply it on a thread, not on a side like a tire shine, it forms a fresh rubber layer, good to drive up to 50 miles on snow or ice, much better traction. Drive safe ✌️

    If you don't have room for a shovel, cut the bottom and part of one side of a 4 gallon milk jug, or laundry detergent jug, etc and use it as a mini shovel/scoop for snow in a dig out. You can also still use it as a funnel if you need one.

    Never keep water bottles IN your car. When it freezes overnight; bottles popped, causing water leakage, and that water freezes as well. Better to keep it in your house and take it in the car just before departure.

    • @chion918

      when water freezes, it becomes ice, it doesn't pop. but best to put the water bottles in a container and have a towel wrapper around it, so if/when the ice water melts because of warmer weather, the water is absorb by the towel and stays inside the container.

      Most water sold in stores freeze at a much lower temperature than 32 degrees. They also don't expand much if they do. Scary I know.... I don't drink them very often. Experiment with a few brands to find out. A few in a emergency beats the alternative.

    Chocolate bars have that energy in them that helps in cold weather. Also they are easy to eat even frozen. Cigarette Bic lighter types do not work as they get colder and colder because the gas pressure inside the lighter reduces to the point it cannot push the fluid out to burn.
    Have waterproof matches and a couple of the "Emergency candles." They last longer than dinner table style candles. Also have a couple small candle holders. Candles will keep a car interior warmer than you may think.

    Here in Northern Europe long before we had WD40 silicone we used to paint or rub rubber door seals with solid or melted candle wax in winter its natural does not attract dirt and repels water, doors will not freeze to the car, silicone spray in door locks is not a great tip TBH silicone spray thickens in freezing temperatures and makes locks stiff to open it also draws dirt into the lock barrel where it will be suspended for evermore in a silicone mush, Glycerine syringed into the lock will prevent freezing and will lubricate its also cost far less than a tin of expensive Silicone spray from WD40

    • @igorpotocnik7231
      @igorpotocnik7231 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I use ski wax instead of candle wax. You can put glycerine in one of those little plastic bike chain oil bottles with long nozzles if you don't have syringe.

    Regarding those emergency items he showed in a trunk. Believe it or not, water freezes in below freezing weather and probably would burst the flimsy plastic bottles.
    Also batteries, such as in a flashlight, don't work well in low temps.
    Once I had a loaner car from a dealership that had a chip or something in the lower central part of the windshield that I noticed when lights hit it driving home that night. The next morning, I put the defroster on medium because the windshield was covered with a thin layer of ice, and the thing cracked from that place when the hot air hit the frozen windshield -- which they said I was responsible for..
    Now I take longer and keep the defroster on fairly low.

    Consider getting military MRE Meals to take with you in case you’re stranded. This was a great and informative video.! also consider having candles and matches with you in a tin can to keep them dry. That way you can melt some snow for drinking. Also your bottled water if you’re stranded is going to freeze so you’re gonna need to build to melt that.

    I would be very hesitant to use that ratchet strap as a tow strap. Its breaking force is way less than your car weight and has a lot of metal hardware to snap that can break windows/kill somebody. It's important to get a proper tow strap that rated to 3x your vehicle's weight. The best option would be a kinetic tow strap which works like a bungee and reduces forces on the vehicle while multiplying your pulling force. Avoid metal hardware at all costs unless its rated breaking strength is well above the forces at play in the vehicle recovery.

    Keeping your fuel tank filled with gasoline also reduces water vapour, always present in ambient air (about 23%). As the fuel level subsides, this leaves increasing room for air. With increased accumulation of water vapour, the risk of condensing water freezing in your fuel tank also increases. Very little ice is needed to block a fuel line.

    Won't the batteries go bad from the cold weather?
    Won't the charged items lose their charge in the cold?
    One more won't you end up with just ice in your water bottles?

      If you find yourself in an emergency I suggest contacting emergency services asap.
      Electronics can be insulated against cold weather like the car electronics.
      Cold weather effects chemical batteries and reduces their output.
      The water bottles would freeze at 0c. Sports drinks have a lower freezing point than water but be careful. You can melt clean snow and drink it. You can idle your car for warmth unless snow blocks your tailpipe (Use with extreme caution).

    Carry a tyre pump manual or electronic the number one reason for roadside breaks in the UK is tyre deflation causing punctures blowouts tyres coming off rims etc.
    You can also let pressure out of tyres in an emergency to get more traction but re inflate at the earliest possible safe opportunity or your tyres might come off your rims.
    The two handed bike ones are surprisingly good with the shrader valve connections.
    Also check all your fluids levels check your antifreeze levels and efficiency, add screen wash fluid brake, clutch, oil check them all and adjust tyre pressures if carrying passenger’s luggage etc up and down. Typically fuel station ones aren’t accurate they live a rough life being dropped and run over they can be out by quite a bit several Psi buy your own quality one look after it and it will last a lifetime.

    Snow scoop okay but a foldable shovel more useful on crusty icy snow and can be used as a pick / back drag.
    Also $20 cash (or more) kept in kit goes a long way should someone stop to help you. Many won't accept it but at least you offered. If you've ever had to pay for a tow company you'll know what i mean.

    3:10 -
    I have that EXACT jumper in all 5 vehicles plus a couple spares in the house for use during power outages. I also add a cheap pair of short jumper cables to make it easier to reach a proper grounding point under the hood.
    Water like that is a freeze/burst hazard. I use a large thermal bag (like for carrying frozen grocery items) to keep my water from freezing. Additionally, gallon zipper bags to storage bottles separately serve as a hedge against leaking bottles.
    7:45 - it's advised to NOT leave your wiper blades up like that. Wind can make them slam into your windshield and crack it. A better option would be to use a plastic bag or even a long tube sock to separate the wipers from the windshield.

    Really useful tips, thank you for making this 👍 Cold water (not warm or hot) poured onto windows works wonders to clear snow and ice. For extreme climates the temp. difference between cold water and frozen ice may be too much IDK, but here in the UK it seems a safe rule of thumb and works extremely well. A large watering can and a quick trot around your car and it speeds things up greatly ❄️🔥

    Put plastic bag over the rear window also. If you have remote start, set your front defroster to warm or hot before it snows. When your ready to go out start the car and let it run for a while to melt or soften the snow or ice for easier clearing.

    Very nice hacks and tips.. Thanks.. In case of doors stuck because of iceing along the door edges you can melt the ice by using 2/3 of sprinkler fluid and 1/3 of water to spray around the frosen door in order to get into the car.. Mild weather getting ice cold can create this condition..😊🇩🇰 Greetings from Denmark, Northern Europe..🙏🏽

    get an ice scraper with a brass blade.
    I don't live in a snowy area, but was traveling through one a few years ago. I picked mine up at an ace hardware after it took 2.5 hours to deice the windshield using the defroster.
    The brass is softer than steel, and won't scratch your glass. The edge will also get under the ice, and lift it off instead of abrading the surface. Sort of like the credit card trick, with a better handle and a blade that won't wear out . They are also more compact than the plastic ones, and lay flat in your glove compartment.

    • @warriormanmaxx8991
      @warriormanmaxx8991 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mikegrok - if your defroster took 2.5 hours to de-ice the windshield, either you are exaggerating, or defroster is not working.

      @@warriormanmaxx8991Exactly. I live in Saguenay (Canada) where it regularly reaches -30 degrees celcius in winter and it won't ever take two hours to defrost a car, even if there's a thick layer of frozen rain

    • @mikegrok
      @mikegrok 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@warriormanmaxx8991I think it was 12f. It worked eventually. I had just arrived in Salt Lake City from San Francisco the day before, and had no supplies for cold weather. My car usually gets 38mpg, so there was not a huge amount of excess heat to pull out of the engine.
      After getting the windshield deiced I got snow tires, which I still use in the winter months 7 years later.

      It is basic knowledge, just like putting winter windshield screen washer liquid instead of summer or else it will crack by expanding water in the hose inside in the winter. Or pour vodka/ alcohol into a mix. So it will not defrost.

    Proper winter tires (on rims) will make it easier to swap them out in the fall and spring. No taking your vehicle to a tire shop to have the tires mounted twice a year saving you time, money and wear.

    Be careful with putting your windshield wipers up! I always used to do it, but a winter storm caused them to get broken by leaving them that way. $500 later and I now take the time to clean them instead.

    Keep a can of de-icer in your house where it is warm and take it outside to spray the windshield if there is a lot of ice. Have a an empty bottle and a large cup. If you get broke down and have to go, pee in the cup then pour that into big size Gatorade bottle or a water bottle if you have a funnel.

    Don't leave your wipers up.. Just cover your windshield then put them back down, put vase line on the cover where the blades have contact to stop them sticking.. Better still is get a cover that goes over the entire car
