Gimbal is better and less tiresome, have been shooting handheld but trust me at the end of the shoot my back would ache 😊 however handheld is okay depending on which gear your using and how best you can ninja wlk
You did a good enough job handheld in my opinion! Gimbals are of more use with regular cameras. I often film with a Gopro and horizon lock engaged and sometimes it can even outperform a gimbal+regular camera (when it comes to stabilazation).
Very inspiring, thank you! I'm a grandma who takes and edits videos of my grandkids...I can do the basics of editing with titles, transitions, audio, etc., but I'm always looking to improve. (My version of scrapbooking) I'll save up for a gimbal and try out these ideas!
Stabilization on new phones are really amazing but keeping the horizontal level steady is really hard especially for low level shots. It is tilted at some point with the handheld shots. You can fix it on editing stage for sure but that means extra work for hours depending on the project. So, other than stabilization, gimbals help to keep horizontal level steady all the time.
On Samsung Galaxy S series phones there is a option that named super steady. When you use this extreme cinematic eis with ois it gives you better result than iphone’s action mode so you dont need big and heavy things like gimbal to film.
Something else to think about; top end phone stabilization costs. A modest very phone and gimbal combo can get the results of a very high end mobile on its own for a lot less cash (and than you still have the gimbal if you get to upgrade your phone).
I wanna ad something here, if you take hyperlaps or running shots or any kind of action activities the gimble is going to make it done easily so if you got a gimble that's going to enhance the stability! And if you just shoot some stable shots while standing at one place or little bit walk you don't need a gimble with your iPhone ! ✨❤️
Yes, I totally agree. If you’re following/tracking a subject or doing any kind of action sports then a gimbal is a must. Stay tuned for part 2 where I will be shooting some parkour 😀👌
@@LearnOnlineVideo hi steve. I watch your videos alot. Did you reach out to anyone to announce winners? I want to make sure it's not someone posing as you.
There is a 3rd alternative. I do a lot of trekking videos, and I simply mount my iPhone to the end of my trekking pole. This allows me to get good close to the ground shots without bending over. You should cover this less expensive (and less to carry) possibility.
Just bought the same gimbal he is using. So far it has been a lesson on 'how to use the gimbal to its fullest'. It really is a great tool for making shots easier as he points out here. It is all about keeping your actions as smooth as possible and not relying on the gimbal alone to produce super steady stuff. I am glad to have the gimbal for sure.
For low down footage the phone in a holder attached to a monopod (or similar) allows you to walk normally and hold the phone very close to the ground, still handheld but much better footage. Great video again Steve.
I don't own a gimbal, just the fact that I would have to carry it around, would make me feel I SHOULD use it, otherwise it would be wasted that I brought it in the first place, it would make me feel "locked" in terms of creativity, but that's probably just me. Great video as always Steve, thanks very much. Thomas
Difficult call, but a gimbal wins when walking or running. Q. Do you switch phone image stabilization OFF when using the gimbal? I often use a camera on a selfie stick, with a technique I developed for an old GoPro with no image stabilisation: Either Pivot the stick close to the camera and move the free end of the stick or Lock the free end of the stick against your hip joint and move the camera end with both hands or Slide the stick through one hand as if it were a billiard cue. Still use the GoPro for risky shots, such as in water or close to a moving object.
It is just awesome what I've learned on this channel. I had two expensive coaches who told me how to do better videos for our channel. But the real technique I learned HERE for FREE! Thank you so so so much!
It's HARD to say that one is BETTER than the other. I THINK the gimbal shots are better BUT I LIKE the handheld shots better; the first-person feel of the handheld shots is very pleasant. Guess it really depends on what you're after. BECAUSE of one of your videos I am now shopping for a gimbal, lol. Keep up the good work. Aloha
Actually its not. If the test is do you need a gimbal, then the answer is no. If the test is the most steady shot, then the gimbal wins. Even if by a small margin.
Really in your report the practice you have is noticeable and the shots by hand turn out very well. I normally use a gimbal, because I record walks and it is more comfortable for me, and I also like to keep the horizon level. For those who may think it is an excessive expense, they can always spend a quarter buying a DJI Osmo mobile 4, now if they have been able to spend their money on an iPhone, they will not mind, here among us, the OPPO The Fain X3 has better cameras (despite the iPhone's hype), especially when compared to the poor wide-angle iPhones, and it now costs very little. Greetings, very good channel.
Wonderful video. I agree, the Gimbal makes shooting easier. Both Gimbal and handheld videos are perfect. I guess it all comes down to budget, but I think a Gimbal would definitely be the best way to go.
This was brilliant, particularly for the beginner or the occasional video. Thank you. Some of the handheld shots can be a bit easier using a selfie stick. Sure nowhere as good as a gimbal but a great halfway house.
I'd like to add another tool possibility to compromise between handheld and gimbal. The ShiftCam ProGrip has really helped me get better handheld footage with the Samsung Ultra S22 because it feels like holding a camera instead of the precarious fingertip handling of the phone. Better high shots and low shots are facilitated because the phone can be rotated. Vortex is not really possible, but then I hardly ever use that anyway. With the camera mounted, I can still slip it into my pocket ready for action. Also, it's not as obtrusive as a gimbal. I have to admit that keeping levels while moving is still much more difficult than with a gimbal.
I think when it comes to shooting handheld, one requires a lot of of experience. Most people wouldn't be able to shoot good videos the way you do it handheld even if the phone has good image stabilization. I would opt for the gimbal.
Agreed. I’m thinking we need a part 2. Maybe we shoot an action sequence and we compare the results? Maybe we get a beginner to go handheld? Definitely worth digging deeper on this one 👍
In Handheld make your hand moving a lot up and down when you slide camera from left to right . But Gimbal make that moving so smooth. I see. And shooting with gimbal from lower ground to higher does better than handheld does
I absolutely love your videos! I don't have a gimbal, I use my iPhone 12 to capture my videos. I watch yours for know how and inspiration while trying to improve my mediocre skills.
Nice and Thanks. I have a few gimbals many purchases influenced by TH-cam videos many influencers produce. I have one main issue with Gimbals. -Weight of my iPhones with Moment Lenses. Many influencers will try and tell us there is no issue if you can balance the phone well. Well from my experience there is only 75% truth in that. They all go out of control after a few manoeuvres. Today I have given up with Gimbals and I find the best solution with the newer phone is a Smallrigs cage and handles.
Apart from the sliding shot from behind the tree, you couldn't really tell all that much. Interesting video as I have been eyeing a gimbal for a while now but may still purchase one just to save my back and phone from damage
No fair. As you pointed out, you still need the camera's stabilization. So for al intents and p purposes, it is an internal electronic gimbal. In any event, if not a total replacement for handheld, gimbals still make the work a whole lot easier.
Very good (and beautiful located) video to compare shooting with and without a gimbal OF THE USUAL TYPE. 👍🏼Regrettably there doesn't seem to be a single product that elimitates the only image shaking that built in OIS isn't capable of eliminate: vertical (as occur while walking). That could be reduced with a gimbal where the compensation axises are near your hand (like a flipped regular gimbal). Your video shows it perfectly: what needs most to be taken care of is not affected to the clips no matter of any gimbal.
I love watching all your videos! I have watched so many of them and love this channel. The videos are well done and informative. I just watched this video and appreciated that you gave your viewers some heads up as to which gimbal settings you are using in your various shots. I realize each gimbal may have different names for each mode. But we novices definitely appreciate the little bit of extra handholding here. Thanks for sharing such beautiful landscapes and video knowledge with us! Congrats on the 1M subscribers...well earned!

Hello! Thank you for your amazing teaching! Which gimbal the best for iPhone 15 pro max? I mean another models for shooting cinematic video, production area, nature and people
Found this vid as I’m considering buying a gimbal. For me a huge bonus would be the security of holding a chunky handle, rather than a slippy smartphone which can feel like a bar of soap!
It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to sit through entire videos, of something I want to learn… let me tell you, you’re holding my interest!!! Very good content! Thank you soooo much
If your a film maker, YES! Your gunna want/need a hand held gimbal. When time is against you weather, light, traffic, anything, your gunna want to get the shot your going for in as little time as possible. A gimbal will dramatically reduce your chance of getting unusable footage. It's an essential piece of kit if you ask me.
I'm so grateful for this video Steve. It's pretty expensive to buy a gimbal in my country. So, this video was all I need. Definately gonna practice these moves). Thank you.
I just think you're incredibly good at what you do, not necessarily meaning the norms like me wouldn't need all the help they can get. What about if youre trying to film small objects? I'm having a hard time getting shots that don't look completely terrible 🤣
If you do a part 2, can I suggest you test with older phones. Even on a S10+ I find the stabilisation is nowhere near as good as what you are showing here. Excellent reference videos as always. Thank you.
Just curios, did you manually focus? The reveal style shots, the focus was on the distant subject without focus jumping to the foreground element. Great vid, one of my fave channels mate
Looks like 4FPS at the left and right edges. Or is TH-cam to blame? On an old tube TV it actually became sharper whenever something moved across the picture, very easy to follow all the way to the edges.
Quick question - is it good, bad, or doesn't it matter - to use BOTH stabilisation methods? In other words, use a gimbal AND have the EIS on in the camera too?

Steve, why don't you use program image stabilization of the footage on your computer? It would be great to see how it would improve your handed sequence and reduce the difference between both your sequences.
Would using a monopod or selfie stick could duplicate the low shooting (almost on the ground) since the phone has its own stabilizer? Maybe the vortex is the only thing the handheld can't do. I have a 50/50 verdict.
The reason I’m looking at buying a Gimble is I still end up with camera shake and also accidentally get my fingers in the way, also more fiddly holding phone, the use of a telescopic gimble must have its advantages 😎
I really love Gimbal edit because it has a smooth camera movement and also I like Handheld edit too because sometimes it gives me smooth camera movement.
The problem with this video is that we don't know what version of android, what kind of app we need. It would have helped people to know these things. Shooting handheld with a pretty good smartphone doesn't help any other people that are using Android and the default Camera app...
Sorry Steve. A consummate professional like yourself can get good footage from an "un-gimballed" mobile in any situation, but most of us can't. I speak as someone who takes fairly smooth handheld 4K footage from a Canon M50 (when I am feeling adventurous) which most influencers say is impossible.
Very cool. I have a Fiyutech gimbal (the one you have is better, mine is limited). I have found that sometimes it is easier to use a phone if you need to capture something quickly. The Gimbal takes a bit more time to get ready. Ideal I would say is to practice both. BTW - the rotating handheld shot actually came our very well!

I don't need a gimbal with my S22. With stabilization turned off and using a glidecam the shots are better with stabil turned on handheld. There are some glitches once in while with stabil turned on though. The real trick is to use a lightweight tripod to hold the phone to do the more awkward sequences.
The comparison is tricky but as always the gimbal is always the way to go..the gimbal edit was best💯💯
