Rifle is a Springfield M1A socom 308/7.62 Nato iron sights about 2” spread 3 rnds at 100 yards. M1A socom is way shorter then the M14 I carried in 68 RVN. Haven’t grown up yet and don’t plan to. At age 72, and with some minor but debilitating arthritis, I've been pruning down my semi-auto collection to those I can still rack the slide. But I have gotten a Beretta Tomcat (the Bobcat, but in 32 ACP), and I found a pretty much full-size automatic in .380 ACP that has this same feature, so - no racking needed. And Smith & Wessen has an EZ that I have, and I've got another M&P with newer easy-access features on layaway at my local gun store, paying it off without busting the budget. So this program was very timely. Thanks to you both for considering us old farts ...

I bought the S&W M&P 380 SHIELD EZ without the thumb safety for my wife. It's not the gun I wanted to get her. I drove 2 hours to purchase a Ruger Security-380 "Lite-Rack", only to be told they sold the last one 15 minutes before I got there. I was concerned about the grip safety on the EZ. But my wife racked the slide one time and instantly fell in love with the gun. At first she struggled with the grip safety. Its not at all difficult to disengage but it does require a conscious effort, you have to think about it. It becomes second nature with practice but initially that was not the case. When we married, she carried a S&W .38 Special with a 6" barrel in her purse. I finally got her to switch over to 9mm semi-auto for extra capacity and something she could conceal on her. That worked fine for many years. As she approached 60, I started suggesting she switch to a .380 but she was adamantly opposed. She didn't think it had enough stopping power. But as time went on she slowly started warming up to the idea. She still thinks the .380 is underpowered. But as her wrists have weakened to the point of wearing a brace, she finally relented. Today she is far more accurate with the .380 EZ than she ever was with a 9mm. She can rapid fire 2 mags (17 rounds) on a 6" target at 15 yards with maybe 1 near miss. That's plenty good enough for self defense in most situations.

Keep in mind, that as a general rule with semi-automatics, the larger the caliber, the stronger the recoil spring, and hence the more strength needed to rack the slide. So for some seniors, just going with a smaller caliber (e.g., .32 instead of .380 instead of 9mm) may be the answer for them.

Maggie needs to learn the distinction between a cartridge (or round) and a bullet. Every time she picks up a cartridge, she refers to it as a bullet. In previous videos, she correctly admonishes people to safety check a firearm each time it's picked up, but in this video she doesn't follow her own advice consistently. This wasn't one of Maggie's more impressive videos because of those lapses. She makes me nervous as she giddily flips the handguns around without thorough safety checks.

My Dad, before he passed, was less inclined to shoot the hotter loads on our bigger guns like he did in my youth. He bought me a .44 magnum once (and then borrowed it forever) and started to load .44 specials instead of the full bucket loads the gun can take. He would carry a .38 snubby with specials in it at the most. Many would say that 6 rounds aren't enough. You didn't know my Dad. 6 rounds could be anywhere from 6 to 100 bodies down the way he could shoot.

For ease of operation and virtually zero malfunctions, revolvers are an excellent choice.
And for people who are going to cry "capacity" this video isn't a gun review. The subject is about problem solving. Not having a firearm if and when you need one and Don't have one, that's a problem..., Not capacity.

Great video (as usual) and Maggie is delightful and knowledgable! Also, in my classes I train the students with the RUGER SR22 BECAUSE it is ambidextrous for both mag release and safety and easy to manipulate, and the mag is easy to load. When they want to try a centerfire, I give them the RUGER American Compact (9mm) because it also is mag and safety ambidextrous. Mag loading for the 9mm is like all other 9s, it's best .done with an UPLULA loader. AND FOR THE LADIES, the Ruger SR22 comes in a VARIETY OF COLORS!

Many Seniors have dexterity issues plus more easily frustrated, a 22 semi would be a bad choice. it's too finicky, clearing a malfunctions would be difficult. I always got better results with seniors when loading and shooting a small revolver at the range. Many seniors have had issues keeping the finger off the trigger when casually handing the firearm regardless how many times they have been in class, on a semi that could lead to consequences especially in a stressful environment. Of course this isn't only with seniors but we seniors have to deal with memory issues more often. I'm pushing 70 years old and been teaching firearm courses for 35 years, today I can relate to many of the senior challenges they face, today I only teach senior's.

Glad you pointed that out. My mom is 70 and is wanting a handgun after a late night snooper was caught on a neighbors doorbell cam. I let her try to rack my LCP and she couldn’t do it due to weak hand strength and arthritis. I considered a .22 mag or a revolver but you made a point about the rimfire reliability I didn’t even consider. So that brings me back to revolvers but would she be better with a little larger revolver over a snub nose like a Taurus 856 defender or at least something like a 856 with a fuller grip.

74, injured right wrist. Favorite is Keltec P17, a wonderful gun. Second due to small size is Ruger LCP II 22 with TK Wingman + 4 mag extension for 14 total rounds. Third would be Bersa Thunder 22 with CCi Mini Mags for more reliable energy. Bersa and LCP II have instant on ArmaLasers. P17 has cheap but effective rechargeable laser from the internet. Younger people often put down the 22, but 17 rounds of quick laser-guuded rounds of 22 from a senior who can no longer focus on front sights or handle recoil from larger calibers is still a whopping amount of threat mitigation.

Now that I'm older I avoid snappy guns...too painful. The Walther P22 and the Smith and Wesson Shield .380 EZ are my favorites.

One flaw for seniors especially in the Beretta Bobcat:If the cartridge is jammed then it will be necessary to either pry it out from the back or to ram a rod down the muzzle in order to dislodge the round. This , for me, is a deal breaker.

My mom has issues with strength and she shot a Ruger 22 and an M&P Shield 380 EZ Performance Center and she preferred the 380. It does have the ported barrel and I think that helped enough to keep recoil down.

One of the common issues is the shaky hands. Ways to combat this issue is a shoulder piece or a one point sling. It does take time to learn how to use the sling as a support. But nothing on the market helps with the side to side shake.

I'm 70 years old. 5 shot .357 Charter Arms revolver is my EDC gun. 2&1/4" mag-n-ported barrel. Stainless steel. Have used a single action blackpowder revolvers since I was 19. But, I own a P-38 and it's well broken in, also have a full size 1911, which I sometimes carry with 5 additional magazines.

I loved this, and it's obvious from comments a lot of us older shooters did, too. However, another important consideration is sight radius. I spent a small fortune luckily years ago to equip my wifes Glock in .380 with a crimson trace light, green laser, and holtser combination to improve hit probability without relying on the diminutive sights that came on the gun. Whereas, I currently shoot and carry a Glock 48 with tritium/fiber night sights. At 61, I'm thinking of switching to a shield, EZ or beretta Cheeta. But, again, a sight change would be required. This video and ammo costs has me considering an SR22 or TX22. In my hands or anyone else who practices and tests their ammo knows the .380 and .22lr are deadly in the hands of a skilled older operator.

When it comes to racking a slide w/weak hands, I'd think the relatively new Walther PDP with its new "terrain" slide would be the absolute best right out of the box.
Regarding the loading of magazines, one has only to buy an "UpLula" and the weak hands problem is solved.

Good job Maggie! I have arthritis in my hands so I am considering the S & W EZ. Watching you reminded me of an embarrassing situation almost 50 years ago. Growing up in a big city, I had only fired a .22 rifle once before entering the Army. I had no bad habits to break so I did exactly what they told me and qualified with a high score on 3 weapons. When I ETS'd out of the Army, I thought I was a highly trained killing machine! (a little hyperbole) But I still had never fired a hand gun. I bought a used 1911 and picked up a couple extra mags. I had to take the "malfunctioning" .45 mags back to the gun store to exchange them for some that worked! That was when I learned that the slide wouldn't cycle forward with an empty mag inserted. This was a family owned gun store and, call me a chauvinist if you want, what made it especially embarrassing was that it was a woman who had to explain this to me! Thank you for the video!

I'm not there quite yet at 67. My home gun is a Glock 21 in 45 ACP. I carry either a CZ PCR in 9mm or a Beretta 84 in .380. I recently got a Taurus 856, in 38 special with a 3 inch barrel in preparation for my older years.

Got one of those, but I hate the creepy and stiff triggers and my Ruger LCP II will outshoot the S&W 22🙃. I bought both guns in the same week and now the S&W collects dust whilst the Ruger LCP II is EDC 👍, much better trigger too! Guy

I’m 75, have been carrying since 1968 & can handle both revolvers & semi autos equally well. As a leftie I prefer to leave the mag release on the left side of the frame b/c my XLG hands tend to bump the mag button when I grip it, AND that’s how I was trained when my PD transitioned to semi autos in the late ‘80s. I still prefer a revolver in retirement for many old school reasons, including street experience when I needed my issued thirty-eight trying to arrest three armed robbery suspects.

  • @tonylam9548

My solution is a gun that is older than I am , a Walther P38. I like the long double action pull, which I consider safer than the "double action" by legal definition only with those striker fired guns. For 22LR, I inherited an old Colt Woodmen, with the heavy barrel. Same grip angle as the 1911, and I can carry it cocked and locked. When I had better eye sight, I can drive nails with this 22 at 10,15 yards. The Colt have the same features as the SR22 except the ambi safety. You also cannot use the woodsman in any serious crimes, for the barrel are one piece with the frame , that means you have to melt the gun afterwards, whereby the Walther , I can change the barrel in 15 seconds. Too bad they are not readily accessible due to Canadian laws. Those guns will eventually be in US to relatives. I am waiting for them to be old enough.
