Good old '58. I remember the 'thump' as it transitioned from series to parallel on acceleration. It did it before I went to Bury, and it did it until the end. Was quite a fast set. (They all were if I was in a hurry!!!).

Used to do a lot of work on industrial speed control systems. Lots of notch systems giving the machinery a good jolt. Not forgetting the regenerative resistors glowing a nice cherry red during breaking.

I was following along on google maps and there are a lot of disused lines that diverge/converge with this one along the way.
It's a great part of the country for finding stuff like that, there's tons of it.

I'm currently working upgrading the metrolink line from bury to Victoria installing new troughing
it's interesting to see the change In infrastructures and I've found numerous 3rd rail Insulating pots in the bushes surprisingly in good condition and they make good door stops lol 😆

It's notable that third rail DC power was more widespread than the Southern region. There were/are systems in Merseyside, North London, and Tyneside although at different voltages. Also the run down grottyness of the stations was striking. I know Victoria was due an upgrade, but looking at other footage of BR around the 70-90's it was the same everywhere.

Third rail exists still on Merseyside.

Real proof that this line (as well as the Gosport/Hatfield Line) are ripe for conversion into a S Bahn style system under Manchester.

Noticed the signal box at Prestwhich, on the left of the screen there was a goods sidings at Prestwhich where the flats are now.

Obviously converted from 4x3 to wide screen, but it was scary when that 'flattened' train came towards us! Also, I have vague memories of a rail/rail level crossing just outside Bury, where the old Bolton to Castleton line crossed to 'new diversion' to the Interchange. Did the East Lancs Rly have that bridge built?

Heavy rail is preferable to trams. The stations would have originally had a master and porters, a fire in the waiting room grate and a lavatory. Now it's a draughty bus stop, and a seat if you're lucky. Obviously, trams are better than no public transport, but not as civilised as a proper station.
