    This is part one of a two-part video where I paint a 34X48" painting titled "Land of the Free" for my one-person show in June 2020 at Trailside Gallery in Jackson, Wyoming. In this video, I start the painting and get all the background and middle ground done. In the second video, I'll be finishing it by painting the foreground rise, the horse standing on it, and the herd of horses running toward the viewer. I talk you through my painting process, show you the colors on my palette and how I use the painting medium Liquin to make the paint behave better for me. I'll also talk about why I'm doing what I'm doing.
    Like this video? Want to buy me a coffee or a new tube of paint... or generally just support the channel?
    Now you can and it would be most appreciated. Once I reach my $1,000 goal, I'll be buying a second camera to record my mixing palette since it's the number one request I get. Cheers! www.buymeacoff...

    My mentor, a student of Sergei Bongart told me to get back three times the diagonal when stepping back. It also helps to wash the studio from your mind, especially if feeling a bit confused by going in another room or turning your back, and having a cup of tea or other drink. I often forget to drink while painting and a little dehydration makes thinking much less efficient.

    First, love the studio! Wow! I'm envious of the space. Second, I always paint the sky first and then add the clouds on top of it. It's so interesting to see how people layer their work. Third, "Warp speed?" That's a nice Star Trek reference. LOL! Fourth, you "..do a stroke and then let it be.." I wish I could do that. I just keep messing with it. I need the discipline to just, "let it be." Last, you put color right where you want it and then leave it alone. I tend to blend, blend and blend some more and like you say, that just muddy's it up. I learn SO much watching you. Thanks!

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Taylor. I'm really fortunate to have my studio, but a couple of years ago I was painting in an extra bedroom. And before that, in my basement, lol! I'd like you to try something for me. Do a painting, maybe a small 9X12" and try to get the value and color as close as you can before you put it down, and when you do apply the stroke, put it down and leave it alone... no matter how much your head is telling you to fix or change it. It's what I do when painting plein air and it'll help you to grow as an artist. If it doesn't work on the first try, do another and then another. Each time you'll take what you learned on the last painting and build on it. Trust my friend! You got this.

    Hello Steve... you and one other person here on TH-cam are slowly convincing me to try oils again. Last time I gave them a try I was still in high school and had no guidance, hence no patience and I gave them up for another medium that satisfied my desire to create faster. I'm within two months of medicare and have had the urge to give oils a try, so maybe watching your videos will push me over the cliff to something new. I enjoy the way you paint and how you take the time to explain the details, it really does make the difference. Looking forward to part two and I want to wish you and yours the best of the New Year.

      Happy New Year John! I do so hope you try them again. Funny thing is, I first started experimenting with oils back when I was in high school, but put them aside for the airbrush and commercial illustration. I didn't pick up a brush again until 2002, so I know it can be done. And seeing you here commenting on my videos over the year, I believe you have the commitment it takes to succeed.

    Thanks for the fun and very informative video, I love watching and learning so much from you. I just want to comment on your great puppetry skills! My husband and I were children's ministry leaders and had a puppet ministry for many years. We used the wide mouth puppets and taught the Jr. High school kids how to use them and did many performances around our area. It always seems artists have more than one creative ability! I actually got started painting because we needed set backgrounds for our ministry. Many years later i am trying to fine tune that skill and use for more personal interests. I live in the Mojave Desert and want to paint our desert (although it is not quite as beautiful as where you are). I am having a hard time trying to get the feel of what is my focal point, I get lost when out there trying to capture the scene.

      Hey Daniel, sometimes I tape the piece onto a sheet of double-thick cardboard. This helps me to have more control when I have to do detail work such as the herd of horses in the lower left. Hi FF, no worries. My canvas is Claessens Universal Primed linen, so I use yellow ochre acrylic paint thinned down to milk consistency. This knocks the stark white of the canvas down so it's easier to judge values and I can allow some of that underpainting to show through here and there and it gives it a kind of pop. When prepping to work on a big piece like this do you apply an adhesive to the back of the canvas and board you are using or are you able to keep the canvas relatively flat with just tape? Also is there a tape you recommend, it looks like you used a 3m painters tape of sort. I generally buy pre~stretched canvases but now that I’m moving away from airbrush and into oils and brushed acrylic I like the idea of attaching it to a stiff board. Thanks for all the great videos.

    • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt
      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I temporarily attach some of my canvases to a double thick flat of cardboard I get through Uline. To attach it, I find it works best to staple it flat and then apply a strip of duct tape to further keep the edges of the canvas clean and to keep my hand from catching the edges of the canvas. I use the blue painter's tape to keep the edges of the painting cleaner and neater. I guess it's just a thing I have about having a hard line where my painting ends. It just makes things easier and look more professional. I find that I like working on a hard-backed surface better when I have detail work that requires more control, like the herd of horses running toward us in the lower right. I haven't gotten to them yet in this video, but will in the next. Hope that helps. Good question Rodrigo!

    Hi Steve! I'm actually about to start a Monument Valley painting as well. I visited northern Arizona a couple weeks ago and ended 2022 on a good note! Now it's a time to paint! I have a question Steve. I noticed that you appear to have done a graphite drawing underneath your tonal wash. Did you seal it with spray fixative or does it really matter? I'd like to do some drawings on my linen canvas - nothing detailed, but something to help me keep proportions and objects in the correct place like you did in this painting. I'd really appreciate an answer to this question because I've done a lot of research and can't seem to find a consensus on it!

      Hi Ethan, Arizona is a treasure trove of amazing places to paint! Good luck with your Monument Valley painting. Here is a link to a video I did of how I draw on a canvas and then seal it... Paint On! th-cam.com/video/ev5nUMbLPSI/w-d-xo.html

      I believe he once said they are Blick Scholastic. The talent is in the artist, not the brush.

    Did you prime with burnt umber? What did you use to tone your canvas?

      Hi Christie, my landscapes are always toned with yellow ochre, while I tone my nocturnes with burnt sienna. Thanks for watching and paint on!

    Have you tried M Graham walnut alkyd? It's great stuff. I can't take the smell of petroleum-based products.

      Hi Tba, that's a great question. I have tried walnut oil, but not walnut alkyd, didn't even know that was a thing. I don't use the walnut oil because it's so slow to dry, whereas Liquin dries overnight. But I've heard Morgan Weistling uses, or used to use walnut oil. I'll have to check into walnut alkyd... thanks for the question and I get it, lots of folks are sensitive to the smells of these kinds of products. The trick is to find what works for you to get around your limitations or sensitivities! Paint on!!

      @@SteveAtkinsonFineArt It's beautiful stuff--no odor and it dries quickly. They make good oil paints, too, using walnut oil--very buttery and smooth.

    Please, what´s that brown brilliant thing in the corner of the palette? Please let me know. Thanks.

      @SteveAtkinsonFineArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Hansel, are you talking about the pool of amber/brown gel? If so, that's my Liquin that I use as my medium for my oil paints. I add a small dab in each of my mixtures to aid in working over top of a dry painting. It also helps speed drying so that I can continue to work on a painting without needing to wait for it to get through that sticky drying unworkable stage. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

      Hey Snapper, since I work on acrylic primed linen, I can tone it with a very thin wash of yellow ochre acrylic. But, a wash of thinned yellow oil paint would work too, but it takes longer to dry.

    Oh, no..no..no... you're painting as if you're retouching a photo, and it looks like you're doing the entire large painting with the same small brush. Oil is such a remarkable medium. In the end, it should look good enough to eat!
