Realistic Rocks - How do you paint them?

  • It's no secret that rocks are hard to paint. All those tiny textures, cracks, and shapes can be hard to manage within a painting. Over the years I've come to realize though that there really are no secrets to getting outstanding looking rocks. Whatever style or technique you like to use, the bottom line is that in general they simply take a lot time to do. Learning to not cut corners and do them correctly, all while being patient, I think is one of the keys to a great looking rock. So hopefully I can shed some light on this subject for you in this video and that you'll feel a little more confident when tackling the rocks in your next painting.

    COLOR MIXTURES:
    - The highlights of the rocks were mixed with some white and a touch of orange, sometimes a touch of red as well.
    - The shaded side of the rocks (dark brown) was mixed with black and white to produce a gray. Then I added some red and orange to colorize it a bit.
    - The dark shadows were mainly just black and red, sometimes a touch of white.
    - The shaded part of the snow was white, black, and a touch of magenta. The highlighted snow was just white and a bit of yellow.
    Thanks for watching! (:

For those of you wondering, my wrist is doing better. Doctor could never figure out what exactly is going on even after an MRI. So anyways not a huge deal, but that's why I'm still icing and wearing the brace. I cracked up when I was editing and realized how obnoxious the ice pack was lol .. Thanks all for watching!!

You are truly amazing! Thank you for sharing your talent. Here's an idea for your wrist. Try using a warm wax dip. Hand wax dipping heats your bones. You can purchase at Walmart, beauty supply store, or on line. I also use aspirin cream. Best of luck to you. Hugs

Another amazing tutorial/walk through. It's always so satisfying watching you paint and turn blobs of colour from blocking in into beautiful and realistic nature. I used to never block in my paintings and just rendered as I went which was waaaaaay too hard. Blocking things in has changed my paintings dramatically over the years. I'm so glad you stressed that lol, Keep it up!

I’m enjoying painting old brick walls and granite walls and slate walls. Just seem to be drawn to old buildings lived in things with hidden memories. I like the layering of colours and effects you get, like the look of moss and lichens etc., I’d love be enabled to do wet slate look.

Hi, just thought I'd write a little something even if you won't get to see it. I'm guessing you get tonnes of messages! I was attracted as much by the quality of your work as by your wrist brace. I love to paint, but I too have a wrist problem. The pain is getting worse and it was the most depressing thing to consider i might have to give up doing what i love. But seeing what you achieve with a wrist brace is very inspiring indeed. I thought it would be too restrictive, but obviously you cope remarkably well. You've given me the inspiration I needed to persevere. I hope your wrist is better now. Mine won't get better unfortunately, the best that can be done is an op to fuse the wrist in place so it won't move. I'm putting that off as long as possible, but you can only put up with so much pain! Best wishes from the UK :D
