Again, I am no expert in this area! If anyone has professional experience in cleanup/remediation after man made/natural disasters then please share your knowledge in the comments. For those who know me, I’m usually not one to focus on safety gear. But if you’re helping with cleanup, please wear hats, gloves, masks-whatever you need to protect yourself. The recent hurricane brought a level of flooding that North Carolina’s infrastructure wasn’t built for, so there’s contamination. Stay safe-my wife is still dealing with a lingering cough and chest pain, and we’re hoping it’s just a passing virus, but it’s hard to tell.
US Men’s Academy is still raising money for the hurricane victims. You can donate here.

Top notch info. I hope people listen to this video in its entirety and understand the NEED to address these major concerns. I hope there’s experts that are generous like you and your group and willing to provide aid in those specific remediation efforts. All the bodies that are still buried could possibly create bacteria issues.

I'm glad you're seeing this. This is why watching what big corporations do with their waste is very important, not in just disasters. Martin County, Ky is still working on contaminated water from coal mining.
I'm all for natural remediation of the land, especially having been apart of the Michigan PBB fire retardant scandal in 1973. It still shows in my blood work. They buried the cattle that ingested the beef. Michigan gov't buried its head in the sand.

There were things much worse than golf course contaminants. You need to listen to them if you want to help or remediate what's been done to your body already.

This is something that environmental protection will be doing.
Local, state and federal agencies have been testing daily.
You have to be very careful about what you plant. It’s easy to plant invasive species that end up harming the environment and ecosystem.
They have also asked people to allow them to handle decontamination when they know larger amounts of chemicals are present. Unfortunately some have not listened and have probably done more harm than good.

Things like plastic will continue to put plastic chemicals into the soil for decades if they are not removed.

Doctors offices, pharmacies, auto body shops, oil change businesses, lumber yards were all damaged or destroyed in this darn storm. Not to mention just regular garages and shops that were swept away.

Remember the food chain. We didn't consider the food chain when we were using DDT for weed control. We almost lost our eagles to the use of DDT. The mice and birds eat seeds from the plants that are "not sensitive, or not targeted" by the defoliant, and were then consumed by hawks, eagles, and other animals. This resulted in weakening the egg shells, so that there were years with no hatchling. Consider the wildlife that would consume the high protein seeds of the hemp and sunflowers planted to filter toxins from the soil and water. Also, browsing animals grazing on the foliage of the plants along the sides of the waterways. Area hunters should be aware of the very real possibility of high amounts of toxins in game birds and game animals in the affected areas for years to come. I don't have any answers, just wanted to warn of this danger. Environmental biologists should be a part of the recovery process. The danger will be present for a long time, until nature has a chance to work it's magic.

Things are going to be horrible from an environmental toxicity perspective in a serious way for a very long time
Think about it this way. Think about whatever chemicals were under everyone's sinks, or in their garages? Think about every car , every gas station, every fertilizer depo. Think about every shop, every small manufacturer, every factory, every train car, all of that stuff, multiplied by the hundreds of thousands, all of it got washed into the the water and then sunk into what was left of the topsoil.
Serious remediation needs to happen for any of that land to be good for growing food and for any ground water to be safe again

Preserving your life by leaving is more important than staying with so many uncontained carcinogens! Ppl will clean, grass may grow but a new normalcy will create a false sense of security & safety meanwhile toxins can outgas from the ground, travel in the wind & will take years to overcome. This horrific tragedy grieves every decent person that is aware of it. 🙏🙏 for all that have suffered at the hands of the wicked in this generation! This world us not our home. Maranantha! After assessing all the debris and chemical contamination left behind by Hurricane Helene, it’s clear that cleanup and remediation will take years. It made us wonder and research how similar disasters have been handled in the past. Learning that sunflowers, hemp, and other plants we consume are excellent at absorbing chemicals and heavy metals has given me pause-even when they’re labeled organic. I may be more cautious about buying organic sunflower seeds to consume and applying organic hemp salves.

We are in a situation here where, the plant, which is still in operation, was flooded on the backside. They also found 'supposedly', and I'm saying it like that for a reason, there was a semi found with 250 55gallon barrels were found buried in 10 feet of mud and debris. ❤ CAUTION: Misinformation about Agent Orange could cause harm to the tourist economy of North Carolina.

Round Up is not Agent Orange. Round Up is glyphosate that kills weeds but does not kill GMO crops produced by Monsanto. It is also used to dry (kill) wheat prior to harvest in order to increase yield. Glyphosate has a half-life of up to 97 days in fields or up to 191 days in water. It does not inhibit growth of subsequent crops.
Agent Orange was an herbicide that killed all vegetation and inhibited future plant growth. Agent Orange could break down quickly on dry surfaces but may have had a half-life of more than a hundred years in water. The half-life in humans could have been 7-11 years. One of the two herbicides in Agent Orange was contaminated with dioxin and that caused a lot of health problems. It was notoriously used in Vietnam but was also used to inhibit vegetation around roads and railroad tracks. The US banned Agent Orange in 1971 and all stocks were destroyed by 1978.

Round Up has a completely different composition to “Agent Orange”.
      Round Up is Glyphosate.
Agent Orange was a mixture of 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D but its contamination with dioxin due to extremely sloppy manufacturing added to its toxicity.
Glyphosate is a phosphorus based chemical (and has no chlorine or benzene rings in the final product).
2,4,5-T and 2,4-D are chlorinated benzene based (and have no phosphorus).
      Completely different chemicals.
Glyphosate has a half life persistence in the environment depending on temperature between two days (at 60F) and three months (in freezing conditions).

I would like to add as a mediation to this, and make no mistake I agree that it is a big problem, that I witnessed the water. In my front yard. It looked like the North Atlantic. I know. I am a Navy veteran who has seen the anger of the North Atlantic. A stream normally four inches of babbling water over rocks was a twenty-foot-deep Class VI rapids or greater torrent, heading downhill at essentially 32 feet per second per second. It was endless water in free fall, roaring like a freight train or tornado. It formed maelstroms as the earth gave way. Not whirlpools, maelstroms. Niagra if you cannot believe the North Atlantic. The point is that this was not a flood of rising water. It was running water. It washed away trains. And the cross ties and roadbed they rested on. Not derailed, washed away. When it finally receded, there was nothing left but the rocks and gaping holes. Nothing good left, and nothing bad left either. Nature overwhelmed all the good in us. And it will overwhelm the bad too. All that bad stuff is somewhere of course. But it is not hiding under every rock. Certainly not where I am just east of Black Mountain.
"I remember seeing a fence with dead horses all piled up against it twenty feet deep. There must have been a hundred. The railroad was sticking straight up into the air like a tower." (My great aunt Jemima. That's right... I actually had an Aunt Jemima. She was recalling the 1916 flood in the same area. I didn't really believe her then. Just an old woman exaggerating. I believe her now.

I realize people want to jump in and fix things quickly without red tape or "government interference" slowing them down, but how do locals weigh the risk/benefit decision. If the people burning the debris don't even live in NC how concerned are they about the chemicals being put into the ir and as spread to surrounding hillsides? What are the short- and long-term effects to children, elderly, farm animals, dairy products, chickens/eggs? Does burning lift contaminants through the air to join with headwaters that may be used for drinking and agriculture?

Vinyl chloride is a bad chemical used to make PVC pipe

The PVC pipe factory along the river in Asheville now looks like a giant game of pick-up-sticks gone terribly wrong. PVC pipes are everywhere in that section of the river.
The water in the river was never clean in the first place. Raw sewage was known to be piped in the river.
I love this region. But, I find it appalling the lack of concern about the waterways health.
I lived in rural Buncombe County. A neighborhood upstream of us was dumping raw sewage in the creek. We had to report them multiple times for it to stop. Our neighbors across the creek sprayed a toxic brew along the creek and throughout their property. They are "landscapers" who spray under power lines. There toxic cocktail components were stored next to the creek. No entity, at any level, cared to do anything about their toxicity.
There are multiple stories such as these.
No doubt, we will be told everything is fine, nothing to be concerned about.

The area was also known for mining hundreds of years ago. Lots of cramp in the soil now. We are only using bottled water since. Asheville was known for having a protected reservoir, all the junk from the surrounding mountains has washed down in it. The TN area has a few munition factories, have knowledge of their location or flooding.

I have lived close to Ohio River all of my life. We are told to wait a few months before planting after flooding and I have seen and lived through some pretty serious ones here on the upper Ohio. It's much more narrow valley when you start getting 100 miles or so above Cincinnati This is what we were always told to do. I just google searched and pretty much said the same : Flood waters from the Ohio River can contaminate soil with chemicals and biological contaminants that can be harmful to human health:
    Soil pathogens and parasites
Floodwater-saturated soil can contain human pathogens and parasites.
    Contaminated plants and soil
People can be at risk if they touch contaminated plants and soil, eat produce from contaminated plants, or breathe in dust from contaminated soil.
    Water-borne bacteria and viruses
High water can overwhelm sewer and waste management systems, which can spread bacteria and diarrhea-causing diseases.
    Standing water
Standing water can create a breeding ground for microorganisms and biting insects.
    Toxic sites
The Ohio River Valley has many toxic sites, including the Peters Cartridge Factory in Kings Mills, Ohio, and the North 25th Street Glass and Zinc site in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
To minimize the risk of re-exposure to contaminated soil, you should not replant your garden for 2-3 months after a flood.
To rehabilitate soil that has lost its structure and aeration, you can break up the clay bonds and reintroduce air into the soil. I think winter wil take care of the issue for the most part. If you have a weak immune system may want to consider testing for sure.

You did a good job of pointing out remediation and *especially the follow-thru of remediation, such as what is done with the collector plants after they've taken up the toxins. I want to point out that the assumption that water in the higher elevations of the mountains ought to be safer from the pollutants is missing a very important aspect of how wind and rain cycle airborne particulates right to those places. The particles rise higher and higher during the daytime with human activities and heat. Then they descend all the way down to the land surface (mostly) during the still and cool of the night. The sides of mountains act as scrapers and collectors of the air and all those airborne particulates, which are carried over by wind patterns and weather and are deposited in large portions by rain that is also squeezed out heavier on one slope than another. Years of radiation testing in past decades caused particularly large deposits of fallout on the nearest slopes that receive more wind and rain impacts, even though they were far from the testing sites. Even more impacted were the lowest marshy flats and shorelines of the outflows of waterways that particulates continued to flow down and settle out over many years. But don't forget that cycle of wind and precipitation that carries the particulates into the wall of the mountains and foothills. Even a recent study of PFOS chemicals showed a very unanticipated high amount of those "forever chemicals" in the highest springs nestled under granite outcrops on the highest peaks. That's because of the action of wind and rain on airborne particulates. So I'm saying, don't assume it should be less in the higher elevations. Think AIR routes, not just ground routes. Thank you for putting out this kind of very helpful and important information.

Send those samples to the free state lab and then send another identical sample to a private laboratory west of the Mississippi river to ensure the state isn’t withholding any information. What the state lab will do is say whether it’s ok to live on not give you the actual results of the PPM of the contaminants in the soil. Businesses large and small should provide lists and amounts of chemicals that were washed away. Put the locations on maps, with colors denoting the amounts, and also the buoyancy. Some things will sink, and some will float. Knowing such things can help calculate and map the spread of contaminates. This data can be cross-referenced with actual testing results, to get an idea if accurate predictions are possible to map over large areas. etc

PVC is essentially inert in both powder and finished product form.
It is problematic if it is burned however. Polyethylene and polypropylene are similar.
The pigments can be problematic (particularly the carbon black) (which is why most finished product manufacturers prefer to use plastic encapsulated pigments).
The MONOMERS are a different question but there is a complete disconnect between the polymer production and final product production except for the glass reinforced plastics industry (where you have the catalyst and monomers stored in the final production locations).

For anyone volunteering in these areas, always bring you a good p100 mask. 3M specifically, would prefer full face mask. Not that crap from harbor freight. They do not work. I have tested these out with an old freezer that stopped working and had rotting food inside. The harbor freight allowed the odors in. The 3M was perfectly sealed. Now with that being said, I am telling people to do this due to the toxic mold that is 100% growing in these water damaged places. Even if you think it will be a few seconds. Put the mask on. There are definitely mycotoxins and spores you do not want to breathe in. Aspergillis, t2), Aflatoxins, Fusarium and more. If you have been exposed, you need to be tested for mycotoxins. If you have mycotoxins then you have an infection or infections. Symptoms will be fatigue, bloody nose, spaciness and dizziness, breathing issues, headaches, brain fog, tremors, hair loss, light intolerance and more. It will also likely hit the immune system. Mycotoxin tests include my myco lab, real time labs, prairie labs. You need an integrative or functional dr to test for these things, and if positive you need antifungals and binders to get this crap out the body. I know that is a lot to take in but you do not want these to cause you harm. Also, you need something like Fiberlock cleaner specifically shockwave and a pump sprayer, as well as gloves and eye protection. You do not want this on you. I would be using this everywhere that had damage, that is salvageable. This stuff cleans mold, but also bacteria and viruses and pathogens that you do not want on your things. They use this stuff in Florida when hurricanes come in with water damage. Anyways I hope this helps anyone going out there.

There are a multitude of reasons not to build or live too near a river or stream that is prone to flooding. One reason is that what you built is going to get flooded and probably ruined. But another reason is all the toxic materials that you had in you home or garage is going to get washed out into the flowing water, and it will contaminate whatever it settles into. Everything downstream of the flooded area is going to be contaminated.

Chit My Uncle lives in Asheville NC he actually took a shower, the water isn't safe, he has a serious cold at the moment. They can't drink the water, I wouldn't think he should bathe in it. But probably 1st shower since the storm hit, I would say. Some folks up there are c/o not being able to shower yet. Here we are going into November.

There was an EPA super-fund site where a cold war era chemical weapon factory once operated in Swannanoa, I kid you not. There are at least 50 hazardous waste sites in Buncombe County. I heard a rumor that half the cadaver dogs that ran the river banks have already died and the other half are very very sick.

The poisoning of this planet by humans has accelerated greatly in the past 75 years. The warming of the oceans, also due to human economic activity, has now provided the energy to drive storms like Helene. When any politician starts talking about this stuff, we MAY have a small chance to start turning it around. But it’s probably way too late.

@@ONThree I have seen vids of ppl warning that clothing/boots are decaying within 48 hr of use. So much infrastructure in this country is old, outdated & vulnerable; bridges, power plants.. frightening to ponder that budgets & plans have not be implemented to prevent failures.. sad to say & not to minimize/compare the devestation of Helene.. Maui, train derailments, fires & more severe flooding in New Mexico, Canada, Austalia & Spain.. Neglect, mismanagement, irresponsible stewardship & intentional experimental projects in pursuit of gains with disregard for life are overwhelming to comprehend & prompt more prayers 🙏 May ppl recognize their need for God, humble themselves before Him; May God have mercy upon us & deliver us speedily from the hand of the wicked! Awesome to see the body of Christ working together, bearing one-another up, knit together in Agape love bringing glory to God by the witness of His Spirit at work! What a testimony to those that see!

The "known" lithium deposits are in an area that wasn't really affected.
But, the quartz mine area in Spruce Pine was in the area that was hit particularly hard. 30" of rain, 110 mph wind, flooding, mudslides and multiple tornadoes.
There is silica in the dust on everything. Silica is known to be toxic to the respiratory system.
This mountain area is extremely rich in all sorts of minerals. And the quartz is particularly rare. It is the purest quartz in the US. Highly needed.
