Amazing video. It was informative and you tried different settings all well done. What im also quite shocked at is what camera are you using when you were walking @2:35. Amazing crystal clear footage.
I’ve never made photos using anything more sophisticated than an iPhone. But, strangely enough, I enjoy videos about Hasselblads or Leicas. They look so cool 😎
I had a flash-related question with the X2D but I think you confirmed my thoughts…. I shoot sony, with sony-centric flashpoint strobes (many!). I also use the Sony-branded Flashpoint R2 wireless trigger.. IF I purchase a Nikon-branded Flashpoint R2 trigger CAN I mount the Nikon-R2 trigger to the X2d and fire my Sony-centric Flashpoint strobes?? I don’t want to buy into a different flash system; love the Flashpoint system.
In the brief exposure to the Hasselblad camera I see it as a studio and portrait specific camera. I am impressed with the crisp and detailed photos this camera takes, along with the crop ability, and retaining the sharp image. If Sony had a medium format camera with a 100mp sensor, it would take photos in the same caliber of presentation as the Hasselblad camera. Each camera is designed for its purpose. I have not ever encountered the bubble bokeh until I have viewed this video, if it is the effect you are going for awesome! The Hasselblad has its strengths, however it also has its limitations.
It's a stunning landscape camera and the Hasselblad Natural Color Solution has no equivalent in Sony. Even with a 100mp MF camera, Sony would not match the IQ.
Nice vid FYI - Max sync speed of Z9 is 1/200 not 1/160th and there is also 1/250 TTL FP (which deploys a slightly different flash process). The same can be said for the A1 when using electronic shutter and full frame (obviously the A1 offers faster sync speed shooting crop mode or using the mechanical shutter. Clearly Tony if you bought better strobes than the "lousy cheap" Godox you used (unless it was the AD600 series -- and yes I do mean Profoto or Broncolor strobes) then you would not have "suffered" the lack of flash power issue you did using the leaf shutter (and yes obviously no speed light can deliver the power to support such shutter speeds - not even the 76Ws A10) - a B10X or D2 (in studio) with 500Ws and 100Ws can. You loose 2 stops with the light modifier you used as well and could easily have moved the light closer or changed to a more reflective and less diffuse modifier, with obvious downsides; but ok. Point made. One can freeze action/movement with 1/4000th that one can most certainly not using HSS or 1/200th or even 1/400th It would be interesting to see if the X2D or any of your other cameras suffer banding when using HSS at 1/2000th or faster and your godox. What is "interesting" to me at least as an owner of an X2D-100C and most XCD lenses (including the 4/28P as soon as it arrives) is the fact that Hasselblad appears to have "fixed" whatever the issue was with the new shutter design that it can be deployed and deployed cheaply in a new lens like the 4/28P, while we are still YET to see the first delivery of the 2.5/90V -- launched over a year ago but plagued by "not good enough for Hasselblad to release". Lots of pathetic rumours that DJI is dumbing down H and the X series in particular, that we have not seen what other V or P lenses will be coming and endless complaint that H has not delivered promised firmware that allows LV while tethering OR hoped for features like continuous AutoFocus (because this is why we are buying the new V and P lenses -- they autofocus faster (albeit in single AF mode only currently)
I assume that the issue of reduced flash power at fast shutter speeds is not due to flash duration but due to lag of the wireless transmitter (so called "propagagation time"). At least at low flash powers = fast flash durations). Do you have more details about this? At what shutter speeds to you see a reduction of flash power? (At what flash duration?) And yes: I also do not understand why the 2.5/90mmV ist delayed so much.
Interesting video. I would suggest when you compare the two pictures side by side in the minute 9:03, you would postprocess the Hasselblad one so you can show in real life how much dynamic range of the picture you can recover. For example, just brightening the shadows would show a much more comparable picture to the Nikon one. Thats just my suggestion, you could do more if you want of course.
Thank you @TonyAndChelsea I apprachate the quick review about the 28P. I was recently about the purchase the 45P and now rethinking to pay more and get the 28P... any thoughts/prefrence compared to the 45P?
I'm sure a camera like this will give camera snobs a warm fuzzy feeling but will it produce images that are significantly better than a camera 1/3 the cost?
There are some scenarios where you will see a difference and many where you will not see a difference. However I think making it about simply technical image quality misses the point of the Hasselblad system. Every time you pick up the camera, you feel the differences in the thoughtful, minimalist design. Driving a car isn't always about simply getting from point A to point B. Sometimes, a car's design can be beautiful. The sound of the engine can be inspiring. The feel of the materials can be luxury. Photography, for most, is not just about capturing beauty but also experiencing beauty.
Well, you can get a used full-frame DSLR and lens for like a tenth of the price and get much better results in any use case. I doubt this camera and lens combo could even compete with a $400 APS-C combo. Just overpriced pretentious "luxury" nonsense like Leica. If you like those cameras/brands, fine, but don't try to rationalize that irrational purchase when you try to position yourself as a "professional, unbiased review channel that has never accepted any money from any manufacturer"
Excuse my ignorance. Does it mean that with the Hasselblad camera, one could take photos in sunlight with just a flash without a Flashpoint XPLOR 600 R2 like you would with the Nikon?
Way back in the film days I used to shoot with a Mamiya RB67 Pro-S Medium format camera also had Kowa six medium format cameras. But now we’re in the digital age, so I have a Sony a7Riii with 4 prime lenses.
I am so wanting to buy into the Hasselblad system, but am so torn up about missing focus. I wear contacts and sometimes glasses and still have a hard time doing manual focus well. Can you speak to the auto focus issues with the X2D?
We only shot still subjects with the single AF point using focus-recompose but it never missed focus. However, that's the technique I would use with a 20 year old SLR, too. I really miss eye detection; that's the one feature that's kept me from buying it. Especially when shooting portraits it really slows everything down and will make me miss moments.
@@TonyAndChelseaI think a firmware update has just added eye detection AF. The lack of that is the main thing that holds me back from purchase. Would be interested in a follow up to see if it can keep up with other mirrorless cameras and prime lenses (currently use an R5).
SSD NAND storage is a part that wears out depending on how much you write to it additionally to the general aging of electronic components. Sure hope that Hasselblad doesn’t use the very same user-accessible SSD as the location for their camera operating system.
I'm sure the OS is on separate flash memory the same way their previous cameras without internal storage worked. But computers and phones use similar storage for their OS's and we don't see constant storage failures from them.
@@TonyAndChelsea Apple’s latest MacBook Pro models have moved their basic EFI firmware (the stuff that manages everything from the moment the system powers on even before the regular operating system) from being on a separate chip to the general user-accessible SSD. FWIW, I love your channel. The production seemed commercial like and perhaps contradictory to some of your other comments on the Hasselblad System. Look forward to your next video.@@TonyAndChelsea
Good review of the lens and the system, just a curiosity of mine, which brand and model of trigger and strobe did you use in the last part of the video?
Very enjoyable. I especially liked the demonstration of the advantages of a leaf shutter over a focal plane shutter with outdoor fill flash. I also loved the way you used a 28 mm lens with a high resolution sensor to get longer lens effects.
What a great job you two have done of explaining the "why" of it all. The folks @adorama are wise to have teamed up with TH-cam's best photo edutainment power couple.
I'm a bit confused and concerned about this new lens offering. If I'm understanding this correctly, you are saying this lens isn't as good optically as the other XCD Lenses. I'm in the market for a lens in this focal range for my Hasselblad X1D ii but now I'm thinking it may not be the lens. Secondly, why would Hasselblad make a lens like this if it's not optically up to par with their other lenses? It doesn't make sense to pair this with a $8200 100 MP camera.
Every camera system has some lenses optimized for image quality and some optimized for size and weight. I didn't have the 30 on hand so I'm not really sure how it might compare... it's more expensive and a bit faster but also older.
This lens has no in lens stabilization, and when I attach it to my X2D 100c, and try to take a photo, it says this lens is not compatible with the IBIS and I have to turn it off to get the camera to work, am I missing something?
Very interesting review, thanks for sharing! In the OCF section, I think you forgot to mention that you can get great results that are not overexposed with cameras like the Z9 by using ND filters.
@@TonyAndChelsea Oh yes I forgot about that! As many stops as the ND blocks, as long as ISO and aperture remain the same, right? So, it would mean you could work with a AD200 or similar.
@@luisdiegosalas It all has to do with the balance of power between the strobe and the natural light... An ND filter does not modify that balance, it does not weaken the strobe vs the natural light like the HSS mode would do...

Crazy how there's a reverse crop factor to the medium format. The strange effects at edges and behavior with sun stars are likely for the sensor just being so large. Im assuming of course.

Not the best, Tony. 1st, Eyecup and EVF resolution of all Hasselblad XCD Series was a big mistake, or -joke, right from the start. 2econd, did i say slow? AF Speed is horrible, compared to Fujifilm GFX Series. Fujifilm really brought Medium Format to the masses - albeit for those, who are wealthy. 🙂 Last, but not least 3rd - the GFX 100 Mk. If flash is properly synced, exposure does not change with shutter speed. With properly synced flash, shutter speed controls ambient light exposure while foreground lighting remains constant. Check our Flash Video Training at Northrup.photo.

Those flares, the bokeh, the smearing are atrocious. I think we can stop sucking up to hasselblad (or leica for that matter) and labelling every piece of crap lens with its aberrations as "character". You know what characteristic people who pay 10k for fashion items want? Perfection, inside and out. I dont believe for a second any of those are "desirable". Apologist nonsense for a 1700usd lens.
Wow! Amazing lens and camera. Sure. That video tho… Excellent video and sound. Major props for the beauty of all the walking shots. Shot on a top secret lens, maybe…?
Well, it does seem that the MF camera market is heating up between Hasselblad and Fuji at least. Which is good for consumers because I think the two will drive prices down in a race to the bottom so to speak. With bodies costing $5000 to $10,000 that's a bit more feasible than what they used to be (like some of the PhaseOne models, which could easily cost $15k or more for the body). So this in a way is good news, but still far too expensive for my tastes (and probably most people's) as it seems FF is still a very good option for 90% of people out there.
Hasselblad is a luxury brand so I don't see it becoming commoditized and devalued... Any more than Rolls Royce and Bentley have driven prices down. The Fuji medium format cameras actually feel terrible in the hands, IMO. The menu systems are archaic and overly complex. Does that change the images? No, but for many photography is more about the journey than the results.
@@TonyAndChelsea I'm not saying it was going to be. It's just become more affordable to the masses than it used to be, which is a good thing in a way. I, at least, don't see that as devaluing in any way. MF is still considered a "premium" format regardless of the actual price to get into it, in many people's minds.
Hi from Finland = in between sweden and russia often invaded by both, not really scandinavian. I really like many of your videos but this one is a full on commercial. what kind of flash are you using , looks expensive but works like shit , i use Yongnuo 658 i think , and i can perfectly use it in high speed sync , so i can get things done on Canon 5D classic . I think its not the camera its your bad or not utilized properly flash , i really doubt it cant do the same thing it done on Husselblad on nikon , shit it can with chinese flash and 5D classic , how cheaper can you go and it all works fine no problems what so ever , except that i usually forget to put it in high speed and i get overexposed shots , until i figure out what's wrong . I think this is your sale thing on Huselblud and i really do hate those phase detect pixels , its juts looks bad , pretty much ruins all your photos for landscape where you have sun in front or strong light , yeah you can correct everything in post even blown out sky you can replace it , and you can shift the color cast and make skin look good even in that picture . But i dont see the point , for1 my clients dont need more then 2 mpix , or 4 mpix . Everyone is on their phone or printing small 6by4 inches prints or smaller . And even with 5D classic there is plenty detail there . And yes it has better 3D effect then Husselblad , a lot better , but you can downsample the image from Husselblad to 12mpix and get that pop , or most of it , but then why have 100mpix , i cant figure it out , cant imagine one scenario where you need it even if your picture needs to cover a sky scraper , people are going to look at it from far , so 12mpix is still good enough , i watched magnum photographers work , no they dont need 100 megapixel nor such a big camera . And i would hate processing 100mpix , that takes time .

Very interesting review, thanks for sharing! In the OCF section, I think you forgot to mention that you can get great results that are not overexposed with cameras like the Z9 by using ND filters.
Yes, though again that also requires more flash output.
Is the Hasselblad XCD 4/28P the camera?
The camera is X2D 100C.
Darn it now I want a hasselblad!!
Are the any channels dedicated to lower $$$ photography. It’s nice to see this crazy gear, but I’ll never get to use it.
I take pictures of dancers and gymnasts. 1/200 or 1/250 is often too slow to freeze the motion. Leaf shutter lenses solve this problem.
switched teams from KEH to Adorama huh
4:03 That metal sounded like aluminium (aka aluminum in America).
Fuji GFX100s II !!!!!!!!!!!!! updated sensor to the X2D (both use Sony)
I'm waiting for the 90mm lens to see how they look for professional headshots
8:00 1/60 or 1/160?
It's 1/160, which is kinda weird to say.
Well, honestly, carrying any "not compact" camera will make you look like a photographer
60p looks great for video
Yeah we love it.
I cannot afford the Swedish masterpeace X2D with 100 MP, but the predecessors go down in price ...
Then a X1D II in combination with the 45 and the now - October 23, new introduced 28, will be realistic ...
I didn’t even know that angles of view had specific years, great to learn such crucial details!
You're being sarcastic but we've discussed how the preference for different angles of view has changed over the years: th-cam.com/video/PHcb_UugiPo/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/8etFWgTPSaA/w-d-xo.html
Crazy how there's a reverse crop factor to the medium format. The strange effects at edges and behavior with sun stars are likely for the sensor just being so large. Im assuming of course.
OK - you have sold me & I have talked my wife into it. What is the sharpest lens I can put on this that Hasselblad makes?
You’re going to love it! We have to try more lenses
@@chelseanorthrup8787 I think I'm going to start with the new 90mm & the new 28mm to start.
Thanks for all the hard work you put into your videos. It really shows!!
great UX from a company with a smaller budget to do all this than the majors.
Yeah, I really attribute it to having a different cultural background from the other big companies.
It’s literally a giant Chinese tech company.
Use a speedlight. Damn weak but damn fast.
II comes soon, rumored with the fastest AF of *any* MF setup, a new 102 MP Sensor, and also IBIS with 8 (!) stops. Times are interesting.

But the Fuji will still give you Disney colors you do not want.
Time to watch a video about a camera that i will never be able to afford

Why can't other camera makers design like this?
It's a good question. They only seem to care about cramming in every feature.
Because Scandinavians and Japanese have very different mind settings in design and ergonomics.
I want one 😅
sample images with fill in flash did not work some images too dark has nothing to do with flash camera was severly underexposed. Not good advice or example.
If flash is properly synced, exposure does not change with shutter speed. With properly synced flash, shutter speed controls ambient light exposure while foreground lighting remains constant. Check our Flash Video Training at Northrup.photo.
It is called balanced flash with ambient light get the daylight exposure correct and use a small amount of flash as fill in.
perhaps Nikon & Canon have this wrong

@@johngabris9690Somebody got it wrong.
Swedish top quality. Amazing camera. For stills.
Yeah it doesn't do video at all.
😂😂😂 yaassss i love this 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Photos looks like a 100 megapixel webcam
so no video capability?
I stopped watching when bad optics was spun as "helping to focus the eyes on the center of the image".
Luxury gear, overkill

Wow! Amazing lens and camera. Sure. That video tho… Excellent video and sound. Major props for the beauty of all the walking shots. Shot on a top secret lens, maybe…?
Sony 24 F1.4.
We all know what this video actually is... final excuse for Tony to grab a hassy 😅😁 hey I love my gfx100s. Go for it!
@@TonyAndChelsea I switched from Fuji GFX to Hasselblad because of that.
Hi from Finland = in between sweden and russia often invaded by both, not really scandinavian. I really like many of your videos but this one is a full on commercial. I sincerely hope people get some other brand medium format camera should they need it. Hasselblad used to be brand that could sell their products on the back of their quality, not some disguised advertisement bs.
what kind of flash are you using , looks expensive but works like shit , i use Yongnuo 658 i think , and i can perfectly use it in high speed sync , so i can get things done on Canon 5D classic . And i would hate processing 100mpix , that takes time .

yea, I'm gonna watch a review on a $10,000 camera ..... not worth it with all the cell phones, AI and all the editing software... you guys keep pricing me out of your blog
This is 80% bull ,. This camera is a dog ,. I have the X2D 100c ,a 45p
Lens , a 55v lens and a 65 mm,. They are all dogs I can’t get any decent performance ,. The image turns to mush at the slightest crop,.. every time I put the camera to my eye I get a different screen ..
And then,..I bought everything at the Hasselblad store .
They , send me a 65 mm lens in a pre-opened box I sent it back they sent me another 65 mm lens in a pre-opened box and they refuse me to return it . Not only is the camera, a dog but the company and the people working for them. They’re all dogs.
Wtf
So the camera body is truly a work of art....but weak AF and so-so IQ from the lens keep me from reaching for my credit card
F4 is so dark thats crazy, the lowlight will be ass lol, phones have 1.8.
F4 on a MF is not F4, multiply by, I think, 0.79 to get your F number on 35mm standards. Phone's 1.8 is not real 1.8 btw. Hope that helps.
@@artphototechit is f4, f4 is always f4. Even if it wasn’t, f2.8 is so dark. The multiplication of f stop is only relevant for blurry background and not for absolute light value.
You need more glass to make f4 for either a longer focal length or for a larger imaging circle but the intensity of light is the same.
Check it out on TH-cam, people take the same picture on apsc and full frame at the same f stop and you get the same brightness.
And yes, every phone has 1.8 and it is in fact 1.8
See sdp.io/crop for more info. A phones f1.8 is equivalent to f7-f/16, depending on the sensor. This camera is equivalent to f3.2.
@@TonyAndChelsea thanks.
@@TonyAndChelsea a phones lens is equivalent to f7- fx for depth of field but not for intensity of light. This at f4 will be much darker than a full frame at f3.2

Supports a genocidal government though, big nope from me
Dear tony in Europe the only things we have propaganda and lying . If you believe god if you gives me hundred hasselblad I will never change to my z9 . At least I have 8k video resolution
The X2D 100C is awkward, clunky, slow.... and makes beautiful images.... could not accept, and got rid of it.
The Hasselblad picture was not tact sharp, the eyes were not focussed. So does that mean the 10K Chinese camera has shitty AF?
How would the flash pictues looked on another camera with a mechanical shutter? Probably very similar but with "better AF"
