- THIS VIDEO IS A FLYING REVIEW OF THE GLASAIR I RG. IT COVERS THE PRE BUY INSPECTION THRU PURCHASE. IN THIS VIDEO I DO A FLIGHT REVIEW OF THE FLYING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GLASAIR I, FULL STALLS, CLEAN AND DIRTY STALLS, SLOW FLIGHT, ACCELERATED STALL IN A 60 DEGREE BANK TURN. WE TALK ABOUT WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN YOU ARE BUYING AN EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT. YOU MUST LOOK AT THE LOGBOOKS AND THE BUILDER MANUALS.
I also have a G1-RG I built myself and do have the extended wing tips with extra fuel. Mine also has the dual sliding canopies for the AC benefits in summer, no regrets not doing gull wings instead. I use 100 mph on final. I am 6'3.5" tall I had to mount the rudder pedals as far forward as possible and still maintain the full range of motion, mounted the seat back and seat pans as far back as possible without cutting into the rear spar and reclined the seat back slightly more than normal. All done because of my height. My engine is an IO360-C1D6 with counterweighted crank, no rpm restrictions.
10:1 pistons flowed ported and cam modified, 245 HP at 2700 rpm. Also 1 electronic ignition from Light speed engineering. Also a Whirlwind CS 3 blade prop. I flight plan 185 kts at 2450 rpm at 10,500 - 12,500 burning about 8.5 gph ROP or 7.9 LOP. I carry about 60 gallons max. Including tips, header and main tanks.
Hey quick question: I too am 6'3 and would like to move my pedals forward in my GIII, how difficult or complicated was it -- assuming similar technical overlap. Thanks.
Grew up with Nate Hall. Family friends. My father was great friends with him. Watched this aircraft being built In his garage for years and in the end, I have lots of time in it. Nate enjoyed this aircraft. Nate, my father in his RV8 and a small group of other Glasairs used to form up and grab the $100 hamburger every week. Glad to know N8EL is still flying. The meaning of N8EL is Nate and his wife Elenor. He called her EL.

This was my introduction to your channel. As an owner of a Skystar Pulsar III with 120hp, Glasair and Lancair are my cool, tough big brothers.

When I was 17 years old I spent many hours in the back glasair taildragger doing whatever my dad told me to do back there all the places he couldn't fit he had me crammed into whatever spots connecting parts wasn't happy about it back then but I certainly can fix anything I want to because of that time spent helping my dad build his glasair
Yes very strong airplane so my dad actually landed his a tail dragger in a tree. Yes he was about 50 ft up. That plane is so strong all it broke was the propeller wooden prop. All he needed was a crane to get his airplane out of the tree. He hit the last tree before the runway dead stick. He had that happen two times. One time he landed on a sawgrass expressway. Each time it was little fiberglass particles clogging up the fuel filter.
Just came across your video and only to your takeoff/upwind. I really appreciate your verbalization of your checklists! Keeps us all in the game instead of just watching someone fly.

Appears to be a very civilised machine. Good video, nicely presented. Some information on operating costs would have been appreciated.
The fuel flow at cruise is 7.5 gallons per hour. I do my own maintenance and the insurance is 5000 annually
I read somewhere that it helps if you actually look out while doing clearing turns ;P Check the app, then activelly look out =P Trolling a bit here with that. You were showing the plane and did a GREAT job at that. Hooked me when speaking about side loads on the gear. That said, complacency is a witch (starting with a different consonant and all that).
Yes! I've had to contend with that "free castering" nose wheel many times! NOT my favorite thing. I've always preferred to have a steerable nose wheel. But, you can't always "Have the cake and eat it too!"
Great video, thanks. I would have preferred the sliding canopy like yours on both sides of my G1 - it only had it on the pilot side. They make getting in and out so much easier for the passenger. Wonderful aeroplane.
Yes you are right. I climbed in a G1 with the full door, difficult for sure

Very well done! Excellent instructional video with description of the aircraft, what to look for on a pre-purchase, and flying handling handling characteristics. Negotiating on a G1 RG now with a great EFIS glass cockpit layout, has been maintained meticulously by builder/owner and always in a hanger'd. Looking forward to bringing her home!
If you don't mind; What cameras were utilized on the aircraft, and how did you connect the external camera to the aircraft?
Hope the sale worked out. I loved my G1RG and should never have sold it. It's a really fun plane to fly.
Great info. I am looking at a Glassair 2 RG. with a 200hp IO360. What is the difference in these two?
I have not flow a 2 with the 200hp. I would say a little faster. The airframes are similar
Great video! How roomy/tight is the cockpit? I’ve read “you wear a glasair” but didn’t get that impression from this video. I’ve also been told that the IIIs have to land at 100 kts or you lose elevator authority. Even though the stall speed is low. Love the glasairs. Yours is very nice.
My CHEROKEE 140 is 40" wide at the seat back side post to side post,
my Glasair is 38.5 inches wide at the seat back.
As demonstrated, I did slow flight at 65 knots with gear down and no flaps. It is a great airplane. Its easy to fly. Approach speed is 75-80 knots.
I'm 6'2" and 220lbs and I fit just fine in my Glasair 1RG. Had to use an in-ear headset though, as the Bose would contact the canopy. I agree with this review - the only thing I would add is that for the longer trips it is useful to have some surgical dressing applied to the section of your calves that rests on the wing spar box. The first time I flew mine across the Australian continent I had chaffing in this area. Once I applied the dressing (on the way back), problem solved. I've flown mine across Australia four times. @@sactu1 each airplane is different. Mine has the cushions extended down and my legs are resting on the seat cushion. Very comfortable.

Looking at Glasair for a purchase. I’ve not flown one yet but I’ve sit in two or three and it’s hit or miss on the right length. How easily are the pedals adjusted?

Seems to have some vibrations noted from cam on tail and in cockpit....
Any idea why?
There is no tail vibration. The widow slide rod bounces. It’s a harmonic vibration. Something present with most propeller driven aircraft
