@@tortellinibakedtotally, but the videos are a big part of her package and helped propel her to superstardom in the first place. As with MJ, Madonna etc.
Janet legitimately has one of the best catalogs in music. These #1s are amazing - but man, oh man - she’s got some stuff that will blow you away! I hope you continue on your Janet journey. You will NOT be disappointed.
Many of Janet's and other musicians' older tracks are longer because they’re dance tracks, meant to be played in clubs so people can fully experience the energy of the music. Donna Summer pioneered this concept with her iconic hit “Love to Love You Baby.” Initially, the track failed as a single until a music executive suggested extending it to nearly 17 minutes because club DJs kept replaying it. It went on to become a mega hit on dance floors in the U.S. and Europe.
YES!!!! I tell women this all the time. Madonna made it ok for women to express their sexuality, Janet always kept up with her male dancers and demanded respect but also showed class, and Mariah laid the foundation for female song writers/producers. Not many females singers were as involved behind the scenes as Mariah and sang on the tracks. She was a triple threat. They are the blueprint for women in the industry. They took all the bs from the music industry, the bad press, scandalous moments and pushed thru it all so these girls today can sit back and reap the rewards. And don’t get me started on their iconic fashion moments.
imo, Janet was the direct but very opposite rival to Madonna. But to me Janet took the edge with her added RnB content and better vocals. Madonna really brought her RnB senses into play in the early and mid 90s tho. I cant mention one without bringing up the other. All pop/rnb artists after these 2 are caricatures and/or amalgams of both these musical gems
Yasss! Try her hits that didn't reach no.1, such as Nasty, Rhythm Nation, Rock with U, What have you done for me lately, Got til it's gone and more! Don't forget videos!
@@careyello I didn't say that I Didn't Mean To Turn You On was recorded by Janet Jackson. He is aware of this since he likes the Mariah Carey cover. Thank you for your input that was not requested.
The song from Glitter, Didn't Mean to Turn You On is a cover song. It was written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for the singer Cherrelle. It was a hugh R&B hit. The movie Glitter and the soundtrack were major flops for Mariah Carey. Listening to Janet's hits out of order didn't allow you to experience her growth. For instance, the early hits that you said were repetitive and long played to her strengths as an entertainer. If you watch the videos they are perfect for her showmanship as a dancer and singer.
Great review Jacob! Janet Jackson is a visual dance artist and you definitely have to watch all her Iconic Music Videos, Janet dominated MTV in the 80’s and 90’s. The Scream Music video (Michael + Janet) is in the Guinness World Records for the Most Expensive Music Video of all time. It cost 7 million.
"SCREAM" IS A DUET BY MICHEAL AND JANET, BUT IT'S DEFINITELY A VISUAL THING , IT'S ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE MUSIC VIDEOS EVER MADE, PLUS, THEY HAVE A DANCE BREAK TOGETHER!
Trivia: Janet really liked the guitar riff at the beginning of Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood. That's what inspired Black Cat. She wanted to do something unexpected that tapped into her love of all types of music.
You have to understand that each album from Miss Jackson is a stand alone, making a statement. So to hear “Black Cat” without the rest of the Rhythm Nation album really isn’t going to make sense to you. Black Cat live is great. Her album “Control” was all about getting away from her father, Joe Jackson, not just managing her but controlling her life. The producers of the album had a thought to take an artist and raise them to be their own person and have their own sound. They chose Janet. It wasn’t her first album, but it was the first without being under Joe’s thumb. She got to keep her own money that she made and deserved, instead of feeding his pockets. Rhythm Nation is “militant” social commentary. It was a big video production album on M-Tv. There was a huge campaign for it to come out that rivaled Michael’s “Thriller” album. The wait was excruciating but well worth the wait. I honestly don’t see how you can listen, and give great feedback, without watching the videos that go with them. During the time of those albums, nearly every song in existence was made for a) dancing, and b) M-Tv Videos. If you watch one video, I would strongly suggest “If.” It is the most sexual/sensual video by any artist ever. The song is amazing, but be ready to cross your legs. I’m gay and MY jaw dropped to the floor! No, she was not a part of The Jackson 5. That was Michael and his 4 brothers. They even had a Saturday morning cartoon series in the early 70’s (that was really bad!) LaToya tried her hand at a solo career. She rubbed people the wrong way and she didn’t have the talent of Janet. That clip you played of Pariah was actually used by Vanity 6 in the early 80’s… before she found religion and quit the music business because it was so sinful. This was my first time to see your channel and I enjoyed watching you enjoy it. What color are your eyes? I couldn’t tell, but they are mesmerizing. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your reactions. Watch the videos!
Some other iconic Janet songs (that may not have reached number one, but still charted as hits) are: "Rhythm Nation" (th-cam.com/video/OAwaNWGLM0c/w-d-xo.html) "I Get So Lonely" (th-cam.com/video/euWjl-dBG9w/w-d-xo.html) "If" (th-cam.com/video/P3ed80nrq_A/w-d-xo.html) "Pleasure Principle" (th-cam.com/video/Q-gu1KETjVY/w-d-xo.html) "Alright" (th-cam.com/video/vRuovJ3hP9o/w-d-xo.html) "Scream" (th-cam.com/video/0P4A1K4lXDo/w-d-xo.html) Also, I always recommend watching the music videos (or short films) that accompany any Janet song. She's an iconic dancer as well and was among the first artists (no doubt inspired by her brother) to use huge production value in her videos way back in the 80s and 90s.
For live performances check out her so excited 2006 billboard, doesn't really matter mtv, black cat live mtv, mtv icon performance where she killed the stage and had everyone in awe, her Scream tribute on mtv to her brother Michael after he died, it was really emotional for her, also her first and only Grammy performance "What have you done for me lately"? She's known as the blueprint 🙌🏼
You should definitely react to Got Til It’s Gone. It samples Joni Mitchell and is a freaking masterpiece. Also, the Together Again music video is one of the best videos of all time, like literally, please react to that!!!
Janet is a legend. Truly a great singer-songwriter/dancer/actress. Her music catalog is insane! Of all her singles, Black Cat and Together Again are my favorites
If you think she showed versatility across the number ones, try listening to the other 17 songs she took into the Top Ten that DIDN'T hit number one!! I recommend a reaction to her song "Alright".
He seems to dislike "repetitive songs" (those we preferred back in the day because the pleasure was longer). Alright is not a good choice unless this is the long wonderful video with Heavy D, that video is a top 10 from any Jackson period.
Thats The Way Love Goes is a super classic. Control, Rhythm Nation, and Janet were her three biggest albums. Rhythym Nation was a package. Songs...videos...and a concept video. It was also during the time when dance music was big. So Miss You Much was a dance song and a video story as well.
I think you should look up Jimmy and Terry Lewis they were part of the 1980s r&b group time but they were kicked out by Prince for writing a song for the s o.s band another 80s r&b group they also wrote and produced the song didn't mean to turn you on for cherrelle in 1984 which you listen to the Mariah Carey 2001 version from glitter which has the same beat but in mid 1985 they were hired by janet Jackson to produce her third album control (1986) and there for they went on to work with janet Jackson with more of albums except for discipline (2008) is the only album that they didn't work on but returned to work with janet Jackson for her 2015 album unbreakable which is crazy michael jackson has a song name unbreakable which has biggie as featured artist from his 2001 album invincible (2001) ain't that's crazy but Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis didn't work with janet Jackson they worked with multiple r&b artists of the 90s like Mary j. Blige and I forgot the other r&b artists but my also guess was Toni Braxton.
Black Cat has always been hands down my favorite song from her & i love a lot of her music. I love black cats & rock so it was a perfect blend for me lol! That entire album " Rythem Nation " was fire. The other songs that was number one from that record beside black cat were love would never do, miss you much & escapade. I love the album title song as well, great dance anthem. You should definitely check out legend " Paula Abdul " she is another favorite who has also does alot of choreography for artists including Janet Jackson along with her music .
"I didn't mean to turn you on" was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on Robert Palmer's album. Mariah did a cover of that song on "Glitter". They are the same team, who produced most of Janet Jackson's hit material. So the similarity you've noticed makes sense. They were part of the Minneapolis Sound and very familiar with a musical colleague, Prince If you ever have time, listen to Robert Palmer's version and the original by Cherelle. I'm not suggesting a reaction to them. "Love would never do without you" has a very memorable video.
Together Again was such an important track because it was the passing of a friend. If i recall correctly it was a friends who passed from Aids. So this track really is really used at Aids benefits.
Janet doesn’t use auto tune she stacks her vocals using different keys …a trick I’m sure she learned from Michael because he’s been doing that since the OffThe Wall era which I think gives the Jackson trademark vocal style
U gotta include “If.” AND watch that video. Generally speaking when u bring in her videos, she’s then taken to the next level as she is a Jackson - so an incredible presence on screen and hell of a performer.
"Again"was nominated for an Oscar. It was for the "Poetic Justice" soundtrack, a movie she starred alongside Tupac Shakur. You say Miss you much "sounds very Michael" but, you know whats fun? This particular album is one of Michael's biggests influences. Production wise "Rhythm Nation" influenced Michael's 90's sound. This was published in 1989. Watch this th-cam.com/video/3_1mzkh5ARo/w-d-xo.html
One thing you gotta remember is Janet Jackson is a pure Pop artist, she isnt R&B; therefore she wont have the vocals or lyricsim of Toni Braxton or Mariah etc. Its mainly about the chorus, the repetitiveness (good for singing along), production and the visuals etc.
I love how you react to the album versions without the videos. This is a real reaction. Most do the singles with videos. But this is the way to enjoy or not the music for the music. Props.
That glitter track is Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced. It's an earlier song they did for Robert Palmer called ( I didn't mean to turn you on). Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote and produced a lot of hits in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. They wrote for Janet, Mariah, Mary J Blige , and usher, and a whole lot more. You have a good ear for production 😊
The sound you're talking about in the Janet vs. Mariah songs, generally speaking, is the Minneapolis Sound... Prince and his greater group (which includes Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) are the architects of that sound. Immensely popular in the mid-to-late 80s. Also, I think Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis wrote "Didn't Mean to Turn You On", too. Same architects.
I love this, Jacob! I agree a big part of Janet's appeal was in her music videos in the 80s and 90s- you get a much better idea of why she was such a legend. Other legends I'd love to see you react to: Chaka Khan, Prince (that Glitter intro you listened to is straight from 1999), Madonna (definitely with videos!), and George Michael
So back in the day when songs were long and maybe repetitive, there would be radio edits for the single releases. You’re hearing the originals, which is the ORIGINAL versions, but lots of those early singles had radio edits that many people prefer. But damn, you made me miss these songs. It’ll be a Janet weekend for me now!
One of my favorites is "Together Again" which is a song she dedicated to a personal friend of hers that had passed away from HIV/AIDS. You need to watch her 1980s videos because her choreographer in most of those was Paula Abdul.
"When I think of you" was her first #1 song from 1986. The song you listened to first "Together Again" was not the original song played on the radio. You're listening to a "remix". This is not the way to introduce yourself to Janet Jackson though. Many of her biggest hits were like #2 or #4, etc. "Pleasure Principle" was a huge hit for her, (because of the video) but it only reached #11 on the charts. Janet's "Control" album had songs that peaked at #1, #2, #3, #4 and #5 and #11 so your format is not a fair way to listen to Janet - or to anyone else for that matter.
It’s just how I get started with my “legends” series. I am currently doing Mariah discography deep dive & hope to move to other legends’ albums afterward!
Rightfully, That's the Way Love Goes is a classic hit, an all time keeper! Good listening in the car to work or at the club. It's crazy, but Miss You Much was the song that topped the Hot 100 the longest in 1989, for four weeks. I agree, it's repetitive, but so many of the hit songs in which someone spells something out (the *hit is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S) are, lol ... earworms. I think her video for it is brilliant.
Some of her most iconic songs that were not Number ones on the Hot 100 Chart, were either Number One on other charts or in the top 10. Those are more lyrically impactful. And YES, her videos bring her music to life in ways that could never be imagined and appreciated by just listening. Also, the song Together Again was a love letter to all of her friends she lost from AIDS. In fact, that a whole Velvet Rope album was very impactful to the LGBTQ community.
Want to win a trivia question? Ask someone who had more #1 songs Michael or Janet Jackson. The answer is Janet. Michael had 13 #1 songs on the hot 100. Janet had 10 #1 songs on the hot 100, but she also had additional songs hit #1 on the R&B and Dance charts. I believe she had 19 all together.
Wow I cant believe those are her only number ones. Those were barely any of her big songs that people remember her for. I can name 10-15 better songs than her number ones, thats wild. Plus it is a MUST to watch her videos. They are iconic and a lot of them changed culture. Check out If, rhythm nation, nasty, you want this, anytime anyplace, got till it’s gone, i get so lonely, and she did the song “Scream” with her brother Michael. I think those are all better songs.
It's hard to believe "Nasty", "Control", "What Have You Done for Me, Lately?", "Pleasure Principle", "Let's Wait Awhile", and "Rhythm Nation" weren't US#1 hit singles.
Part of the advantage of being older is you recognize when an artist is using a sample of a song from another artist. Mariah’s song on Glitter (which I never heard until I saw your video, samples part of a song called “I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On”. By an artist named Cherelle, who has worked with Janet’s production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. I don’t know if Mariah’s song was done by them or Jermaine DuPree , who has also worked with Janet. I don’t think there’s any new artist today that don’t use samples from the past.
Are you really listening to Janet without watching her videos? Her iconic dance breaks and iconic phrases like "Janet, miss Jackson if you're nasty" which is still referenced to this day. Even in the new Deadpool and Wolverine movie Deadpool said "MJ if you're nasty". Janet along with Michael and Madonna are known as the visual video greats. Janet is known as the blueprint cause no female artist was doing what she was doing when she came out. Record labels started trying to create more female and male Janet's.
I am! For my reacting to legends series, I always start with their #1 songs and then I move to live performances/MV based on requests from my Patreon! Will be reacting to more Janet soon!
Great reaction. I grew up in the late 80s and 90s and Janet was the top entertainer during that time. You need to watch her videos and check out these songs: 1. Rhythm Nation 2. Come Back To Me 3. If 4. Anytime, Anyplace 5. Runaway 6. I Get Lonely 7. Someone to Call My Lover 8. Feedback And best ubreleased tracks I can guarantee you will love: 1.This Time 2. What About 3. Trust a Try
I think it would have been a slightly different experience if you listened to the list in chronological order. You would hear the progression of her sound. But either way, glad you are on the JJ ride! (Side note: Black Cat is a great song but a strange #1 considering her catalog).
That Mariah Carey intro is actually a remake or a sample of the Cherelle song I Didn't Mean To Turn You On from the 80s. The Mariah Carey song has more notes than Janet Jackson's Escapade's synths.
I HIGHLY recommend that you let us pick the song next time. These were definitely bops for the radio, but by far were not her best. Man, we didn't do Any Time, Any Place, Let's Wait A While, Funny How Time Flies, Pleasure Principal, I get Soo Lonely, Come Back To Me.
I cannot believe Rythmn Nation wasn´t on this list. And I agree with others that without the videos (and her dancing), you are really not getting the true JJ experience.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced the Cherrelle song that Mariah remade...I Didnt Mean to Turn You On. Same producers, therefore similar style and sound. Please review Cherrelle "I Didnt Mean to Turn Yoy On"
Reacting to Janet and not with her videos is a tragedy - she is as much a visual as artist as she is a singer/songwriter.
Agreed. I feel this way about Britney too.
Music videos, and live performances aren't as hyped of media as they used to be.

Janet doesn’t use auto tune she stacks her vocals using different keys …a trick I’m sure she learned from Michael because he’s been doing that since the OffThe Wall era which I think gives the Jackson trademark vocal style
She literally uses autotune on All For You and that's the song he mentioned it on.
@@legnaevar tell Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis that as they produce her vocals. No auto tune.
Not reacting to her videos as you hear her sound is a SIN!
Madonna, Janet, and Mariah ARE the blueprint for women in the industry today. Without those three, music is very different today.
pssst dont forget Whitney
She did one collaboration with Michael: Scream
Yo the shade towards " Doesn't Really Matter" was insane. 😂😂😂😂
Janet has just finishd her worldtour. Check that out, her dancing was fire.
That Mariah song was taken from Cherrelle, year was 1984. Give it a listen :)
That was my jam!!
@@andra2377 for real, just as good as Saturday Love!
Have Janet collaborated with Michael you asked? Of course she have!!! Listen to Scream by Michael/Janet
Janet!!! 😍
I love how you react to the album versions without the videos. This is a real reaction. Most do the singles with videos. But this is the way to enjoy or not the music for the music. Props.
Thank you!!
When Jacob asked if Janet and Michael ever collaborated, I wanted to SCREAM. What rock have you been living under? LOL.
Janet is my favorite entertainer! I love all of her songs but Let’s wait awhile and If, and You want this are some of my favs
This guy is mesmerizing.
Janet is a phenomenal dancer as well with some of the best music videos of the 80s and 90s.
❤JANET JACKSON THE 3:39 N 👸 OF ENTERTAINMENT ! ANYONE Who Hasn't heard of Her or says they no of her Legacy Talents!must be from another planet!
Im so glad u are enjoying her music 😊
One of my favorites is "Together Again" which is a song she dedicated to a personal friend of hers that had passed away from HIV/AIDS.
You need to watch her 1980s videos because her choreographer in most of those was Paula Abdul.
Yes Janet! Love it!
That Glitter song is a cover of a Cherelle song, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, same producers for Janet.
Lol should have listened to the radio edits, the album versions may be a lot for a first listen through.
If you watch the videos for these songs you will be amazed with her in all of them. The video production and dancing can be incredibly.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced that Mariah song to give it that 80’s sound she was going for…..
I'd say it's a celebration of that persons life in song.
Who the hell are you not to like Doesn't Really Matter!
Wow I cant believe those are her only number ones. Those were barely any of her big songs that people remember her for. I can name 10-15 better songs than her number ones, thats wild. Plus it is a MUST to watch her videos. They are iconic and a lot of them changed culture. Check out
If, rhythm nation, nasty, you want this, anytime anyplace, got till it’s gone, i get so lonely, and she did the song “Scream” with her brother Michael. I think those are all better songs.
It's hard to believe "Nasty", "Control", "What Have You Done for Me, Lately?", "Pleasure Principle", "Let's Wait Awhile", and "Rhythm Nation" weren't US#1 hit singles.
With Janet, you're only getting half of the performance when you don't watch the video.
Love Janet Jackson
Part of the advantage of being older is you recognize when an artist is using a sample of a song from another artist. Mariah’s song on Glitter (which I never heard until I saw your video, samples part of a song called “I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On”. By an artist named Cherelle, who has worked with Janet’s production team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. I don’t know if Mariah’s song was done by them or Jermaine DuPree , who has also worked with Janet. I don’t think there’s any new artist today that don’t use samples from the past.
You should definitely listen to Control the album where she got creative control for the first time
Come Back To Me has much romantic angst and the video is gorgeous.
The majority of these are from the Rhythm Nation 1814 album. Shows it was her best album.
Great reaction. I grew up in the late 80s and 90s and Janet was the top entertainer during that time. You need to watch her videos and check out these songs:
1. Rhythm Nation
2. Come Back To Me
3. If
4. Anytime, Anyplace
5. Runaway
6. I Get Lonely
7. Someone to Call My Lover
8. Feedback
And best ubreleased tracks I can guarantee you will love:
1.This Time
2. What About
The same producers did that song for Mariah which is a remake that they did for another artist previously
The reason you hear that Mariah song is because the same production team - Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced the original track by Cherelle.
I will next time! I always take live performance requests on Patreon. For the first reaction of the “legend”, I always just listen to their #1 hits!
I cannot believe Rythmn Nation wasn´t on this list. And I agree with others that without the videos (and her dancing), you are really not getting the true JJ experience.
You got to watch the music videos to these songs!
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced the Cherrelle song that Mariah remade...I Didnt Mean to Turn You On. Same producers, therefore similar style and sound.
Please review Cherrelle "I Didnt Mean to Turn Yoy On"
Please react to her 1993 VMA performance of That’s the way Love goes/If
velvet rope album, damita jo album, Discipline album and The pleasure principle song are so so so good. plus a lot more
I second velvet rope thats my favorite 1 from her
