    Greetings from the hinterlands of central NY, in apple country near Lake Ontario. Thanks to Junction Fiber Mill for introducing me to your channel. Very enjoyable! I'm mostly a sweater knitter, with the occasional hat or shawl. Hats are so hard to get right! Agree with you re: socks. I knit 2/3 of one a couple years ago and that was it. Also agree about summer knits. I've made several nice summer tees and rarely wear them. 😊

    My first guess is silk. Going to check the other comments now 😅
    Can't wait for your next video! I really hope your continuing this podcast. Just found it a couple days ago and love it 💚

    do both for cowls. You could grade them again and then look into what is next for knitting. I assume silk as well.

    I love the dustland cowl. It’s so good. I think it’s a winner and would pair perfectly with denim or navy. Keep going ❤😊

    I have been making Dustland patterns since SW patterns were only available in pamphlets. My current dustland is a sweater for my nephew in Sandnes Garn Peer Gynt. I have made Dust land patterns in Eco Cascade, Rios and Jameson Spindrift doubled.So yes, lots of different gauges depending in whether it is a hat, scarf, shawl or sweater. Thanks for making such an original podcast. Nothing is more boring than the new trend of many knitting podcasts. 90% of the ones i follow i unsubscribed from because they are sll the same. Watching multiple videos on summer sweater likes,winter sweater likes, top 9 likes, top 9 dislikes, every week has turned into watching 20 seasons of Petticoat Junction. Thank you for your originality.

      Thank you for your comment! I really appreciate that you think my channel is somewhat original :) I'll look at those yarns for my Dustland re-do!

    You could, also, go up a needle size for the checkerboard.

    This channel gives me great ideas for stash busting. I always have that one skein left over from my sweater project that I never know what to do with. Love seeing the knits and color combos.

      Thank you for watching! I've enjoyed your channel as well! I have a stash of Holst Supersoft I dip into now and then (I think searching for that yarn was how I found your channel originally)

    Wow - really good and interesting trivia/bonus questions!! Thanks! Yes, an episode on cowls!! I have the same issue with hat colors but the opposite since I have silver white hair - while I think neutral greys/cool beiges/winter whites are beautiful, they look a bit off or odd as a hat on me. And, funny thing is that my whole reason to start (teach myself) to knit was to make my own socks 😊❤🧦 but everyone doesn’t have to want to knit socks and some people like to knit socks for others and not for themselves.

      Ahhh, glad I'm not just being too picky with the hat/hair thing. The struggle is real!

    I would say a replacement for silk... Not sure about the other question but as far as a video about cowls go I would love to hear both what you've knit and what you'd like to knit. Thanks for another lovely video. 😁

    NATR saw the Emotional Support Chicken on the Chevyrell podcast. Although it spread quickly after mentions from Kevin and Ray, it might have been Chevyrell who started it all.

    Like you, I am a 'trivial knitter'. I knit mostly hats, mittens, socks, scarves, cowls and dish or bath cloths. So-seasons do not apply. I knit year round, and I knit what I want year round.

    I personally prefer videos that showcase patterns a person has already tried, but I would also watch a super long video of both cowls you've knit and cowls you want to knit

    I'm so glad you've given Michigan Fine Yarns two shout outs. The owner, Swaran, is so helpful and great with color suggestions. They carry an enormous selection of yarn in every color way and ship very quickly. It's my local-ish yarn shop.

    I love summer knits and I'm starting to try and harvest native plants in my garden to spin into fiber hear in the Midwest. Fun Fact my husband used to work for DuPont before they spun off his department. He worked on the building right beside where nylon was created and first made in manufacturing scale. Nylon was created to be a synthetic silk so was the first semisynthetic although it created a more cotton like fiber. Orlon was the first acrylic fiber to be produced.

    My guess is silk for the trivia question
    Logical and financially based too. Silk nylons for women or stockings were definitely popular and a thing but still a luxury... And the depression and wars ... Replacement I believe was and is nylon
    Btw love the keira -spelling may not be right I didn't ensure prior to typing, but love how you paired it with the contrast yarn and how it worked up. It's beautiful and I would wear that bad boy year round!
    Thanks for another fun and wonderful episode can't wait till the next

    I love making socks, however that does not mean you should too. Have you thought about turning that one sock into a pair of fingerless mitts?

  • @reylwriting
    @reylwriting 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nylon was to replace silk and I think the first acrylic was Fentex? That’s without looking it up. I think you could turn your single sock into a cute snake if you stuffed it and darned a tongue or eyes! I did my own emotional support chicken but used the crochet version of the pattern. It was pretty easy to seam up using single crochet and the joins give cool texture. Less fiddly than trying to be invisible. I’m currently making the Winkle mittens from the Espace Tricot book, have you seen it? Really lovely, and reminds me of Montreal which is my home town :) I’m not a seasonal knitter either. But at least I have lots of winter to wear all my socks and shawls!

    • @trivialknits
      @trivialknits  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Oooo the snake is a good idea! My daughter would probably love it and it could live in her room instead of the chicken lol

    Checkerboard patterns are difficult for stranded colorwork since the color changes are all stacked, which really accentuates tight tension! Knitting inside out should help, and I also stretch the stitches out on my RH needle immediately after every color change to make sure the float is long enough.

    Nylon has the strength of silk. I remember it was used in parachutes and women’s stockings during WWII . The acrylic question is a bit more difficult without looking it up online. Thanks for the video.

    I have tried several times to make socks because other knitters seem to LOVE their handmade socks. To date I have not finished one sock. I hardly ever wear socks, so why am I trying to force myself to make them. I think it is a matter of FOMA. Thanks for your videos.

    I love the yellow cowl you are making. I hope you keep going. I haven’t used Swish, but the crazy sock lady is using it in an extremely complicated cable sweater for her son and does not seem worried about pilling… I have heard complaints about bicycle being terribly pilly in sweaters 🤷‍♀️. I hope you get some joy from the WIPs soon. I would love to see cowls of all kinds, past and future.

    I saw the ESC on Needles at the Ready. I have knit many, including two for grandchildren and one for my daughter. I enjoy the actual knitting and choosing colors/using up bits of leftovers is also fun. Sewing up not so much. People who see them want them. Maybe because the size is perfect for squishing?
    Nylon was used as a substitute for silk, especially in stockings. I think. :) And Orlon is the bonus answer.
    Do two separate cowl videos! Start with ones you've made--likes and dislikes--and then cowls in your queue.

    Your hats are beautiful. If a very professional knitter such as yourself found intarsia tricky then I have no hope of knitting it. I have dyslexia and I'm a mirror image knitter. I have an emotional support REAL Cat.. Kitty Levine is a 10 year old Calico cat. No chickens here 🐓

    I have been so tempted by the emotional support chicken. I've been holding myself back because all my stuffed creatures have turned out looking cursed rather than cute. I think it's a finishing issue.... but every time I see a chicken on a podcast I have to talk myself down

    • @trivialknits
      @trivialknits  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lol, mine may look cursed as well. It's a pretty quick knit so not too big of an investment. I think that's why everyone is willing to try. I say go for it, if only to get it out of your system!

    I think Nylon was meant to replace Rayon. Just an inkling, didn’t look it up
    DK about the first acrylic , maybe acrilan??
    I’d be interested in seeing the cowls you’ve already made, and whether you wear them.
    I generally prefer nonsuperwash wool, I’m a big garment knitter: but I can see the advantage of a superwash cowl as my neck, like many people’s, is my most sensitive and when I feel like a cosy neck accessory I do tend to pick the softest. I really like your Dustland cowl, I would persevere

    • @trivialknits
      @trivialknits  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the encouragement! I agree with you that cowls have to be soft. In my experience, even some superwash yarns are too itchy. It seems that I never really know how I'll react until the cowl is fully made and I can wear it a few times. I prefer nonsuperwash too. :)

    Why do Test Knitters always say that have SECRET KNITS? Why mention a secret? My Trivial question to you Laura. .I keep secrets and don't mention it.

    • @trivialknits
      @trivialknits  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well, the knitting pattern itself is the secret, not the fact that I'm knitting it. :) Since the video is a recap of what I've been up to, it just made sense to mention the things I've been working on. More details will come soon.
