Just found your channel and went through and watched everything you’ve put out! Really enjoy it!
I did the Rockefeller and it was so fun! I did a malabrigo sock
The first one I know for sure! 15! The second one I'm totally guessing at....4? I've personally only done the last 3 mkals, and I think 2 of them were 4 colors.
Thank you for your podcast, I love it and is one of my absolute favorites! I am knitting in the Bay Area but am originally from Switzerland. I have mixed feelings about the MKAL. I participated the last two years and definitely love the excitement around it. The Doodler was my first Westknits shawl but I knit it years after it was the mystery shaw. I always want to keep up as I think it would be hard for me to continue after the MKAL is over. I didn’t love the design of my first MKAL shawl Twists and Turns, so I was planning on knittIng Exploration Station during MKAL month. However, when the whole debacle of last year’s shawl happened, I felt so bad for Stephen! I decided to purchase the pattern out of solidarity and ended up knitting two shawls that year 😅. I will be cheering everyone on from the sidelines this year as I need a break after that. Looking forward to seeing what you are up to next and hope this podcasting project remains fun for you for a long time 💕
Well, you could stuff it and you’d have an emotional support sock?
Hi from Ireland ☘️ I’m so glad I found your channel. Like you I’m a massive Stephen West fan, I love hats, scarves and shawls, sometimes socks, am sensitive to wool so only really knit sweaters for others and rarely knit anything with cables. Texture and colour are my “thing”. When a hat fits nicely it’s like a loving hug from your child but when it’s tight it’s like an uncomfortable squeeze as you’re trying to get out of a busy subway train! Please keep on with your videos, you are wonderful.
Grenouille pronounced Grun-wee means frog 🐸
I loved this hat run down! As a newish knitter, the more hat reviews the better! One of my faves so far is the free Purl Soho mixed rib 🥰. I’m fascinated by some of the Stephen West designs.
I loved this round up and I’m glad I found your channel! I’m thinking of jumping into the KAL for the first time. I’m an ambitious beginner. I’m thinking of how to do it in a budget friendly way and thought about Knitting Picks Stroll? I’d love to know what you think since you’re familiar with Knit Picks yarn. 🥰
I may want to try the Stephen West MKAL this yr but in a really budget way. I’m considering perhaps Knit Picks Stroll. I’d love your feedback! Also since you’re sensitive to some wool too, do you find PurlSoho Linen Quill prickly/itchy?
Yes! I have used Stroll before, but not in many years. It's a decent yarn to work with, though it doesn't work up as soft as some other superwash sock yarns (in my experience, but your mileage may vary). It would probably be a good budget option, though! If you want to add mohair, I do think the Knit Picks Aloft yarn is pretty nice as mohairs go. I've never used their Palette yarn, but I want to try it. It's nonsuperwash so I'm not sure how it is for wool sensitivities, but it looks nice in the projects I've seen people complete with it. I have worked with Linen Quill but never actually finished a project with it yet, so I can't say if it blocks out softly. I'm guessing it's pretty prickly, with those long linen fibers that stick out! If anyone else has thoughts, I hope they'll see this comment and reply.
Hmm, sound is echoey this time. I appreciate your openness about the successes and nots. Useful.
Thank you, that's really good to know about the sound quality since I was using a different microphone than usual.
Hello from Melbourne, loved your content, such a refreshing and interesting you tube, I will go back and watch your other videos 😍
not a seasonal knitter. I live in MN, so I knit wool sweaters, socks and accessories, year round. fingerweight sweaters are worn 10 months or so a year through worsted weight sweaters. Not so much a shawl knitter, I find them hard to keep on in a lovely way. cowls are a big favorite these days. mostly a thrifted yarn knitter.
of course you can knit just one sock. I've never done it. I have probably knit 100 pairs of socks, my go to portable project. thank you for mentioning the junction fiber mill yarn and podcast, what a treasure, their price point is beyond me for now, but enjoy their podcast. (would especially love their neons!)
My guesses are this is the 18th MKAL and the most common number of colors is 4.
Exploration Station was my favorite one to knit. I have not made the other two you want to make. I have a large collection of Stephen West shawls. I think he is a great designer and teacher. It’s nice to find another fan! West
Most sheep per capita or most number of sheep?
The lindal cardigan looks like a fascinating knit!
The camera movement trying to focus is so weird yet intriguing. On one side it‘s sometimes going wild and driving me a little crazy, in other moments it adds so much dynamic and makes it feel almost interactive mirroring how I would move in a „real“ conversation. So weird, so cool. Sorry for the side topic 😅 🧶💖
I have made the Starflake out of Linen Quill and LOVE it! It’s a really fun knit. I’ve also made the Slipstravaganza, the Shawlography, and half of the Twists and Turns (I think In am going to combine that beginning with the end of Geogradient). Not sure how many MKALs but guessing upward of 10, also I’m not sure how many colors used but would guess it is the 5 color ones. Love your content and enjoyed seeing you on the Junction Millcast.
Oh that's great to know, since I have a bunch of Linen Quill in my stash too. Thanks for watching me on the Millcast! I think I would have guessed 5 colors too (but that's not it)
Your ranking was so interesting! Must say I love how yout twist and turns turned out 💖 I think it looks amazing, especially with the pop pf pink! It‘s giving 80s
Thank you so much!
Weather is changing this week in Northern California- got my exploration station around my shoulders as I watch! I did shawlography during the mkal and mostly kept the pace. In general I prefer to pick and choose which designs I make, and with the large scope of the work on these, I prefer to skip the mystery part!
Totally hear you on that!
@@trivialknits exploration station is a really fast knit compared to the mkal designs. Relaxing and easy with lots of garter and simple stitch patterns . Not a big shlanket! I configured it to use 5 colors: two greens, two burgundies and an indigo.
Thank you for this video, you made me sign up for my first ever MKAL! I am going to use dark green with grey to match a dark green jumper I'm knitting for my son ☺
Oh wow! That sounds like a really nice color combo. Looking forward to hearing how you like the experience of participating in the MKAL!
No peeking, 13 is in my head lol it’s prob like 17. I do love what u did for the center of ur geogradient, enough to make me want to knit one lol all the rest were just pretty or not for me, but urs sparks joy! My twists and turns is just 6 rows from done so ofc my go go dynamo yarn is picked, caked and ready to go!
Lol! You are very close - the number is right in the middle of your guesses :)
Loved your shawls--they are each very beautiful! Hint: to soften wool do not use dish soap. Use hair conditioner. I have used it for years and it does a very good job of softening wooly wools. As I watch, I am knitting Stephen's Painting Bricks Hat. It will be a Christmas gift.
Thanks for the tip! I've also made the Painting Bricks hat. I really like how mine turned out -- hope you enjoy making yours!
I made Exploration Station as my first MKAL. Loved the finished shawl and gave to my daughter.
Greetings from Maryland. I love your podcasts and look forward to knitting with you in my early morning knitting time ❤️ One of my quirks with knitting scarves and shawls is not loving obvious wrong sides when they show. Would you be willing to show the backs of your knits? Thanks for all the time and energy you put into this wonderful channel. I also first saw you on the MillCast Podcast🥰
Thanks for watching! I will try to remember to show the backs of my objects more often -- thanks for that tip!
This was such a helpful video! I’ve been knitting for about a year and just ordered a kit so I can participate in my first Stephen West MKAL. I’m really excited to do this and to see everyone’s creations. Thank you for the tips!
So fun! Hope you enjoy it!
I guess Stephen mostly uses 5 colors. I am choosing an odd number, because odd numbers add interest in any design. Thank you for your video.
I would have guessed 5 too, but it's not quite right... :)
Hi I loved your review of the mkal shawls you have made. Your knitting is stunning. Looking forward to seeing how this year turns out.
Thank you!
Love the roundup. Your last year's MKAL is a stunner! I'm always so tempted to join, but I just don't have the heart for it. I will say the Shawlography is on my list.
Thank you!
I don’t personally participate in the MKAL but I am a member of the westknits fan group on Rav and keep up to date with everyone that is! It’s such an inspiring time of year.
I’m going to try it for the first time. I have dark charcoal and light cream yarn in my stash and a dark red mohair. Those are so me so I’m hopeful I will like it. Now just to finish my wips before it starts.
I love Stephen's designs. I've knit two of his MKALs, two sweaters, and one other shawl.
great to see your past shawls to illustrate. Makes me wonder when you're going to make your own patterns, I can see you have design skills. But also enjoying our comments now on Westknits.
Yay you're back!
Oh I love the colors of the red and brown honeycomb shawl. I have some red yarn I got in a mystery bundle several year ago that I've had no idea how I'm going to use it because I am not a red fan. That might be the solution I've been looking for
Just want to share that I am a super fan of Trivial knits. Your approach to color choice and knitting projects really connects with me. Please continue to share! I look forward to each of your episodes!
Aww, thank you!
I will not be joining this year. I've made quite a few of them - not Exploration Station though - and made them consistently since 2019, and was always on track. Last year I suffered so badly, that I just wanted to be put out of my misery and finish the bloody thing. I decided then that 2024 would not include me. But I will see where it is going and if I like it and want to knit it. If I for some reason would want to knit it, I'll go with Holst Garn, which is local to me. In the meantime, I'll make another Vertices Unite, which I like. I belive that 2024 is the 15th Mkal 🙂
You are correct, it's the 15th MKAL! I was also a bit burned out after last year's shawl and having to start it over a couple times. I got sucked in by the 2-color combos this year, though. I love the Vertices Unite -- always a good choice IMO.
I have the exploration station pattern and my yarn. I went with lime green, bright blue, dark variagated and soft gray/white. Very excited to start. ❤ I like how you see your FOs as works of art....it's a nice POV. The Rockefeller shawl is also on my future list.😊
Thanks for sharing that and for watching!
I always LOVE the excitement of Stephen West's MKALs (and pretty much everything he designs)! I am usually a cheerleader, not so much a participant.
hello! I love your colour combinations for all the SW shawls, and love your solution for the first clue of the geogradient. My first mkal shawl was the T&T, but I've also knitted the Exploration station which is my most favorite SW shawl. I did it with holst supersoft and tried to choose colours near the original (dark purple instead of the black/charcoal original). I like your rust combination for this year mkal. I don't know if I will participate I guess I will wait for at least a couple of clues first... Greetings from Split Croatia! Vesna
Glad to hear you love your Exploration Station!
really enjoyed seeing so much variety in projects and in colour. So many wonderful knitters aren't very motivated by colour and tend to knit in beige or grey - so I am enjoying your colourways.
Thank you so much
Thanks for showing the back of the shawl by Ambah. I am always curious as to the look of the reverse side on shawls and scarves, because of how they are wrapped and worn. Love your format. Thanks for making this podcast.
You're welcome. I'll try to remember to show the backs more often!
do both for cowls. You could grade them again and then look into what is next for knitting. I assume silk as well.
Hi, i want to knit the Dustland Cowl exactly what you did and with the same yarn. Did you cast on the same number of stutches per the pattern? And how long is your cowl? Thanks
Yes, I believe I pretty much followed the pattern except for the length and the twist. Mine is about 20 inches long before seaming.
Greetings from the hinterlands of central NY, in apple country near Lake Ontario. Thanks to Junction Fiber Mill for introducing me to your channel. Very enjoyable! I'm mostly a sweater knitter, with the occasional hat or shawl. Hats are so hard to get right! Agree with you re: socks. I knit 2/3 of one a couple years ago and that was it. Also agree about summer knits. I've made several nice summer tees and rarely wear them. 😊
Thank you for watching!
Vegetable material. FYI Paton's Kroy FX is a very underrated long variegated dyed yarn that comes in many different colors. Great sock/slipper yarn. For most it is a big box wonder
Great tip!
Nice to spend some time knitting with you! So excited to see you on the Mil-cast with Junction Fiber Mill! How fun was that!! Happy knitting till we see you again!
Thank you for watching!
The micron counts for Merino varies from over 25 to about 16 or 17. When you get extra fine merino that usually means under 20. Merino that is 25 microns has more of a tooth to it. Yeah it feels more like natural wool. Just found your podcast by way of Junction Fiber Mill and will go back and watch all of your previous ones. Have you thought of showing us one of your favorite/most worn FO from the past. Say Stephen West shawls or something? Just a thought. Madonna is knitting in the round.
Yes, it was the Madonna who was portrayed knitting in the round! That's a good idea to show my most worn FOs in a future video. Thanks for the idea!
