1 - We share pizza pretty often. I give you a slice of my pizza and you give me a slice of your pizza. There are different kinds of pizza served at different times. A small simple pizza (sort of the pizza Margherita type) can be an individual’s pasta course and would be eaten with knife and fork. There are also Neapolitan pizzas the same size as you get in the US with similar toppings, and they can be shared among several people. I’ve had that for lunch. In Rome I’ve also had pizza al taglio or pizza rustica, which are individual slices (rectangular as I recall) that you choose in the shop and take home or eat at a table. Many years ago I once also had a double crust pizza filled with egg and ham from a shop near the Pantheon in Rome, but I haven’t seen that since. And as I recall, whether you have wine with it or not is an individual matter. Small take-out shops won’t have it, anyways. But Italians are very hospitable and not snobbish about food “rules”.
Exactly… what does he mean you don’t share??? It’s very normal for Italians to share a slice with friends/family or to buy a pizza to share… maybe it’s because I’m firm Napoli 🤷🏼♀️
Except Italy couldn't even actually decide what a pizza actually was until the Italian American came back home and showed them what Americans did with it. Pizza is an inherently American food. No I don't care if it's Italian, we do it better. Have done, will do. Better.
Clarification: in NORTHERN Italy, they eat pizza with a knife and fork. In the SOUTH, they eat it with their hands. There are lots of rules that are, "Italian," but not Italy-wide.
Not every Italian agrees on these rules: - You can share pizza, it's just that if you're an adult, you're expected to eat a whole pie (Italian pizzas are smaller than in american pizzas); - You can absolutely drink wine with pizza, but it's better to drink red wines with a very low alcoholic content (so avoid Chiantis, Barberas, Barolos, Montepulcianos...), as digestion will go smoother; - Italian eat pizza with their hands all the time, but in restaurants it's generally considered good manners to use fork and knife.
I don't like when pizza get's cold ... Would it be okay in Italy to share a pizza and then order a second one after that? ... so that in the end everybody had a whole pie.
@@henningbartels6245Usually, every person on the table gets a pie, so it's unusual, but I don't think there's anything wrong with buying one after the other. Though I imagine you will have to wait for quite a while if you're in a restaurant...
I'm a full grown (non-american) adult with small appetite. I cannot for the life of me finish a whole pie unless i haven't eaten anything that day. I'm kinda scared to go to Italy now... is it allowed to have leftover food to go at least?

As an Italian who usually eat pizza with his hands (mainly because i'm lazy and I enjoy it more that way) I must say: 1) He is right about the actual benefits of using knife and fork, such as better digestion and earlier sense of fullness (for comparison, i would naturally eat 1,5 -2 pizzas with hands, while just 1 - 1,5 with knife and fork) 2) Good manners actually require to use cutlery for eating pizza (except "pizza by the slice"), so while in local pizzeria "Da Ciro" probably nobody will judge you, in formal occasions eating pizza with hands would just make you look like a barbarian in the eyes of people with actual etiquette (but in the end, your choice)

Proviamo a mettere l'ananas su una mozzarella di bufala di qualità, o su un San Marzano, risultato? Senti solo l'ananas.

Let's not be silly, it's not that pineapple shouldn't be put on pizza because we are Italian; pineapple shouldn't be put on pizza because it covers all the high-quality ingredients. Let's try putting pineapple on quality buffalo mozzarella or a San Marzano tomato. The result? You only taste the pineapple. It's not that we criticize pineapple just because we don't like it; we criticize it because it completely ruins the flavor of the other ingredients. Of course, if one is used to low-quality mozzarella and tomatoes, at that point, you can put anything on it. It's not a patriotic issue; it's a matter of common sense.

Not every Italian agrees on these rules:
- You can share pizza, it's just that if you're an adult, you're expected to eat a whole pie (Italian pizzas are smaller than in american pizzas);
- You can absolutely drink wine with pizza, but it's better to drink red wines with a very low alcoholic content (so avoid Chiantis, Barberas, Barolos, Montepulcianos...), as digestion will go smoother;
- Italian eat pizza with their hands all the time, but in restaurants it's generally considered good manners to use fork and knife.

@@eragon78 Is it? It's just bread, tomato, cheese and maybe some meat and/or veg. It's no worse than a sandwich. Unless you get some topping loaded cheese fest from Domino's.
Italian from Rome here... Never seen anyone following ANY of those rules.
1. Pizza can be shared, not a must of course, but can be done.
2. Wine is super good with pizza. Once I've even eaten pizza with superior champagne 30€/bottle.
3. You can eat pizza however you want, but MOST italian just cut it (usually in 4 parts) and then proceed with hands.
As we say in Rome: "meno cazzate, bro". 😉
Best thing with pizza is enjoy it how you want! On a sidenote 30€/bottle is very cheap champagne ;)
To illustrate : I'm Belgian and we don't eat fries every day, we don't drink beer every day, but it's all possible.
Eat the way you like it.
Vero, meno cazzate🤣
Super d’accordo. Manco una di queste regole esiste
@@Kaospattern Not really... That time I had channels in Rome to get a good Champagne della Loira for like 5-6 € and a Moet&Chandon Brut Imperial for under 20 €. OK... It was also 15 years ago. 😅
I'll eat my food the way i want.
Thank you very much!
I eat pizza with a knife and fork! Now I’m telling my friends I’m eating pizza the correct way😂
I don't agree with the fact to not drink wine with pizza, a good white really fresh is always enjoyable
Agree...Is his rule..not mine
Apparently you don't actually enjoy it, it's just a tourist trap
@@investing1223man I am italian
I'm with you. Beer with pizza is just too filling.
ma infatti....una caraffina di bianco frizz non si nega a nessuno
Rule number 4: It's not a proper pizza unless you get pineapple on it. The Italians really appreciate tourists asking for pineapple as it shows cultural sympathy.
Yes, and they also get happy when you ask for chicken Alfredo, or spaghetti with meatballs. Make sure Americans to ask for those, and you will be rewarded!
Extra bonus points if you ask for cheese on your seafood pasta.
Don't forget the cappuccino as a side drink!!! 😂
Let's not forget the number one rule in Italy: those who mind their own business live for 100 years! Eat it as you want and do what you want!
We don’t want it “to stay under our bellies” 😂
I'm austrian and I've crossed the border to Italy countless times but never in my life have i seen a single Italian eat pizza with a fork lol
Well, that rules out Northern influence. Unless it's the Swiss influence...
Nahhh we eat by hands come onnnn.
I'm America only psychopaths and serial killers eat pizza with a knife and fork.
It’s almost 1am and this made me do hungry. I wish I could get this real italian pizza
Thanks to your educational videos I'm learning how to become a better italian. 😂😂😂😂
Avanti tutta, raga! 😁😁😁
Aappooostooo😂
Where I’m from, we make our own rules! We eat pizza by the slice, we usually fold it and we use our hands! Moral of the story is make your own rules, live your own life and be happy!
The pizza looks fire 🔥
Eating pizza like that is like drinking tea with your pinky up.
So, in Germany we actually have a lot of people that immigrated from Italy so we have some true, family run, 1st gen+ Italian restaurants here and you never get the pizza pre-cut, that's really only a thing when you order take out.
I've felt weird about eating pizza with a knife and fork, but never questioned it too much, because that's just how it works in restaurants.
But now I'm reading through this comment section and so many people say that's just a ding Northern Italians and Germans do 😂
it's not true, everyone in Italy use fork and knife (normally pizzas don't come precut in pizzerias, only for children), and there are different styles, someone eats the whole pizza with cutlery (like me), many others just cut the pizza in 4 or in 8 and eat it with trhei hands. The rule is: eat it as you are at ease
Men eat pizza with their hands. Case closed.
@@The_Gallowglass Neanderthal
I'm the only Italian with common sense you'll find here. I confirm in Italy it's mostly eaten by hands also in restaurants. However some people eat it completely with knife and fork. But the "proper" way would be by hands, even in restaurants.
@@marcoac-sx6lq ma non è vero, altrimenti perché nelle pizzerie ti portano le posate, anche se mangi solo pizza?
Nah, if I’m eating good Italian pizza, I’m drinking pinot grigio, there is no way around it
"It's just a tourist trap, thry know you"💀💀💀💀😭😭
by the time the video is over i’ve already eaten the whole pizza
I had pizza with white sparkling delicious Frascati wine in Frascati. We all used a fork and a knife because it was a nice pizzeria.
