LESSON 7 Wool Care: How to Wash & Lanolize Wool Diaper Covers

- In this Wool Care Guide I will demonstrate multiple ways to wash and lanolize wool diaper covers. We will look at hand washing, machine washing, and washing extra dirty wool. We will explore four options for lanolizing wool diaper covers: LIGHT level of lanolin with spray lanolin, MEDIUM level of lanolin with lanolin-rich wool wash, HEAVY level of lanolin with a lanolin bath made by emulsifying solid lanolin, and the dry lanolin method.
After washing a wool diaper cover, you can continue to lanolizing while it is still wet, or allow the diaper cover to dry before lanolizing. For long-term storage, wool diaper covers should be clean and dry, without any lanolin.

What would you recommend as an alternative that is natural and nontoxic? I actually ordered the Now brand lanolin and Outback Gold’s plant-based lanolin wash. Do you think Dr. Bronners soap will be sufficient as a wash without lanolin?

@@ECpeesy Sorry one more question! How do you air dry the wool covers in between uses? For example you mentioned that you had 20 plus changes in one day so are you air drying between each change by rotating between two different covers? Thanks.
Is it necessary to completely dry the wool cover after washing and before lanolizing?
If I am washing/lanolizing more than one cover, can I reuse the water in the baths after soaking each cover?
Sometimes I lanolize two covers together in the lanolin bath, if I'm not afraid of the colors bleeding. You could do one and then the other, as long as the first cover didn't bleed any dye. Just make sure when you are making your lanolin bath to use enough lanolin for two covers. 💜 Heidi
Could I lanolize multiple covers in same tub of water if I put extra lanolin in? For instance 2 tbsp for 6 covers?
Yes, but make sure the covers aren't going to bleed and dye the other covers. I normally only wash and lanolize together if undyed or a very similar color.
What was it u added to the lanolin in the water for the heavy lanolin part?
Emulsifying bar (e-bar) or emulsifying cube.

"ebar" is "emulsifying soap". I got the sheep shaped ebar from Charis 'N Ewe. You could also use a little bit of wool wash or baby soap to help emulsify the lanolin. 💜 Heidi

@@nachummoshelemeshko3537 Instead of eBar you could use a little bit of whatever you are using to wash the wool as an emulsifier. Baby soap, wool wash, shampoo...
How much soap will I need to use to emulsify 1 tsp of lanolin? I've added 2.5 tsp of wool wash and it still doesn't look milky.
I forgot to wet my wool diaper covers before I put them in the lanolin bath. I put them in the bath while they were dry! What can I do to make sure I don't get any spotty results?

I just purchased some used wool snap covers, and want to sterilize them. Could you do a tutorial on doing that? I suppose my concern is how to get the wool to stay submerged without holding it down to the bottom of the pot? Would steaming them work? I have a large pot that has a drop-in steam pot topper. It would fit a diaper easily. What are your thoughts?
I haven't tried steaming a used wool cover. Some people put a completely dry wool cover into the dryer. Especially if you have a rack that makes the item not tumble. Any method with heat runs the risk of possibly felting the wool... 💜 Heidi
Hmm.. should I not worry about sterilizing them then? That seems risky too. What would you do?
@@MsJatek I used the method of slowing bringing the water almost to a boil. I think it bled out some of the dye. Not sure if it shrunk the cover.
How did you get to not float? Or just don’t worry about it floating?
