  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The new 2013 Fiat 500e is an all electric EV version of the Fiat 500. Unlike the gasoline powered Fiat 500 which is rated at 40 MPG, the new 500e gets 116 MPGe, It will also go 87 miles on a full charge and will zip up to an 88 MPH top speed. But perhaps most importantly the new 2013 Fiat 500e Electric is fun to drive. It retains all of the charm of the current Fiat 500, but of course non of the tail pipe emissions. Check out this TFLcar first drive review we see how fast the new EV Fiat is from 0-60 MPH and of course we take a close look at the technology that makes it such a unique electric car.

    I just bought one of these, and I love the car. It's an off least return that I got for $8500. It's a beautiful orange one with 21k miles. It's extremely fast and fun to drive. I'm 6'.5" and people look at me funny when I get out it, but it actually has a lot of room in it. I grew up driving Datsun/Nissan Z cars, and this has way more room in it for a small car. It's obviously not fot everyone, but if you don't need to make up for your ego issues by driving a giant jacked up gas guzzling pickup truck, this little car is a great way to get around and fun.

    Coolest thing about leasing this is that the average guy(like me) buys 3-4 tanks of gas a month for their car at around 50-60 bucks a pop. Electricity rates are such that this thing takes about a buck or two for a full charge, depending on how far you run the battery down. That means with the fuel savings you're leasing it for almost FREE! Amazing deal.

    I like the subtle styling changes. The light gray one with the dark headlamps near the beginning looks great. More than enough range for the average commuter and so much cooler than a Leaf.

    Fiat has said that the 500e was developed stictly for compliance reasons, which is why it is sold only in CA. They have to sell some 0 emissions vehicles to do business there. They have also said they lose over $10,000 on every one they sell. I doubt they really want to sell any more than they have to until battery costs come down to a level that makes sense in the marketplace. Its a bit of a shame because it is a good car. Batteries just aren't where they need to be yet.

  • @Vandetta187
    @Vandetta187 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Electric cars don't make the manufacturer money because they don't need much maintenance. No oil changes, spark plugs, antifreeze, etc. Just a battery and a rotor. Not that many moving parts that could fail. Even the brakes aren't even used because the engine uses regenerative braking. So the brake pads are only used at speeds under 20mph I believe.
    Anyway- hope they offer the lease in new york otherwise I'm forced to get a leaf. The nero esport fiat 500e looks great!

    thanks for those interesting numbers: 87 miles range and 116 MPGe means the 600pounds battery is equivalent to less than a gallon of gas. It also means you cannot drive at full speed for more than 30mins, much better than a veyron!

    I have a Fiat 500 Pop. I get almost 40 mpg average. I was wondering about a few things on this E model. I live in Indianapolis, and it can get pretty chilly here. I'm assuming the heater runs off of the battery? How does that affect the distance of driving. And what is the difference if you use the air cond? Night driving, running headlights, radio or whatever? The whole thing oughta be a giant solar panel, to make it more practical, and a cloudy day might ruin that idea pretty fast. For me, it just isn't practical vs the cost, and you can't always find an electrical outlet in rhe middle of BFE...

    • @robertpryor7225
      @robertpryor7225 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hills use a lot of power, heater too, use the heated seats, they don't use much power. AC's not too bad. Lights and radio don't make much difference in range.

      Regarding the Fiat 500e:
      How is it now? Any defects, mechanical problems come up? What's the good and bad about 500e?
      Would you recommend it?

    • @marcomarenghi514
      @marcomarenghi514 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @you toober: it's been flawless, in fact I love it more as time goes on. The acceleration rush is addictive. In fact, we had the very first cabriolet in the US back in 2010 (I think) and the only issue we've ever had with all 3 of our fiats was a faulty headlamp bulb (!) Sorry "Tony" - you're going to have to start fixing BMW's instead.

    • @marcomarenghi514
      @marcomarenghi514 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh yeah - good and bad. I don't really have any gripes... Range, maybe? The good is that at $99 a month and with our electricity plan modified to best suit charging, we're saving on our electric bill and the car costs less than we were paying in gas a month - by at least $150! I strongly recommend getting a 240 volt charger though. The difference in charge time between the paltry fiat one and the 240 is vast. 27 hrs vs 3.5 hrs. I'd consider that a necessary purchase.

  • @SecondLifeDesigner

    He is six feet two inches tall an says he doesn't fit? Very next shot you can clearly see he has 4 to 6 inches of headroom. Guess he didn't know you can adjust the seat height when he made that statement and later found out you could. Yes the car is heavier because of the battery but because of the battery weight and how it is distributed the 500e has better handling and ride. Only the Abrath and Turbo 500s are quicker from 0 to 60 mph than the 500e. The only real downside to the 500e is its range. Over 100 miles in stop and go city driving. From what I gather if you max the car out at 88 mph on the freeway the range drops down to about 60 miles. So if you drive on the freeway 65 mph the range seems to be as advertised about 87 miles. Now that is flat level optimal driving conditions. Also all homes have the ability to have 240 volt electrical outlets. Electric clothes dryers use 240 volts. Get a 240 volt plug installed in your garage and you can charge to 500e from zero to 100% charge in 4.5 hours. So basically if your daily commute is say 70 miles round trip and only are able to charge at home the 500e is a great choice. If you can charge both at work and home then 140 miles round trip is certainly possible. :)

    So, you put it in P, get on the highway and floor it, and you can go 88mph for just under an hour before the 87mile range kicks in.

    • @electrictroy2010
      @electrictroy2010 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You cannot go 87 miles at 88 miles/hour. The battery would run out of juice. You can do 87 miles at 60 miles/hour (EPA test) or ~50 miles at 88 miles/hour. Not both at the same time
      .

    EV's are dead end until battery tech goes at least x10 from where it is. If we had a modern grid powered by modern Nuke plants, plug-in hybrid would work. But US grid is old.

    Until they make an EV which can provide year round functionality in the Northeast this will remain a granola state vehicle. Unless you can afford a variety of cars to fill the many roles a one or two car family has there is no reason to go all electric except in some very narrow circumstances.

    They don't drive as much as we do. The size of Italy is roughly the same size as New Mexico. It's also harder to travel because of the different countries. Think of each state in America as an individual country (like Europe) and the hassle of having to drive through customs. Bet you'd leave your state much less if that were the case.

      Yes, yes it is a ridiculous amount. But in 2018 I bought a 2015 with 30,000 for $6,400. Sweet deal use it to commute instead of the Tundra. Gas savings will pay for the car in 2 years at about 12,000 miles a year commuting.
