@@M.TTT. I don' t think so, all the GNB battery is lighter. Example GNB(Yellow Series) 6S 1350mah, the weight is just 205grams. It's probably ruined all the competitor.

The problem with CNHL is shelf life.
The other issue is that they are larger than other mAh equivalents to give you the stated C rating.
They will look like a good buy for the price, but you are better off getting another brand such as the Tattu R-line series that has one of the highest Watt hours by weight.
CNHL also suffers from voltage sag faster after one or two pinch punch outs compared to other brands.
You shall be forgiven and we thank you for providing us with all the great specs and knowledge about FPV :)!

Here in belgium i've been hearing a lot about CNHL (china hobby line i think it is) LiPo's recently... some people even go as far as selling all their tattu's and switch completely. Would be nice to see some of those tested.
Never realised up until now that the variety of manufacturers of LiPo's is so large. Unlike for example with 18650's there are like 3 main manufacters LG, Samsung and Sony. Mooch is a known battery tester for those types of battery's.
This testing is a really difficult and timeconsuming process, but most importantly i believe its a huuuuge benefit to the drone fliying community. We should all be thankfull for all the effort put in this. And it is only the beginning of alot of testing is my guess.

It would be cool to see some high mah (6s, 2000+) and some Li-ion packs in there too since those are often used on long range builds where these stats become all the more important. Very useful info

Ever since I started playing with 18650 my LiPo stash has been seeing less use. One pack and I can fly for 10-20 minutes depending on what build I am using.
No GNB!!?? Those are the only ones I've heard people recommend (i fly micros)
I am not an expert but from everything I have seen as of this year in batteries... it seems several of the more popular makers have been found to be not as good as they once were and with more options, there are sometimes better ones to be found

Yes GNB in fact does produce RDQ batteries. RDQ doesn't sell outside the US so I guess GNB just sells everywhere else because RDQ batteries are cheaper
Most micro batteries(not all) are made by GNB
Interesting but....I wonder how much variation you would have gotten from identical batteries. Without that, hard to pick winners. Also, testing for the number of cycles before decay, and what about warranty? A couple of these I suspect come out the doors of the same Chinese plant with a different label. Even the US “manufacturers” of lipos get the cells from China and then just configure them.

You missed a variable Joshua. "Best bang for your buck". Price per watt hour or something similar. Call it the Bardwell coefficient. Kinda like shopping vehicles based on mpg for intended use?

Glad to see this finally! I was happy to contribute but saddened by so little testing. I remember watching you throw a giant switch to test batteries and it was fun. Hope to see more test results continually even though I have settled on Pyro Drone Who cares 6s 1100's. Best bang for the buck and lighter than most of the competition.
Nice comparison. Nonetheless it is only between 3 brands at the end of the day, which is a bit underwhelming for 4000$ to say the least...
I hope that when other vendors see this, they will be eager to include their packs. Thanks to RDQ, GetFPV, and Tattu for volunteering to go first.
$4k is what the machine cost. Now that we own the machine, we can test as many packs as we want. The cost of the testing itself is a separate question.

Thank you for doing something that is so helpful and is not feasible for an individual to do on their own. This is incredibly useful as I buy batteries ~1x / 2years and I buy a bunch. This will allow me to get the most out of my money and know what I am getting in general. Amazing work.
I'm curious: Is there a video where you go into more detail on your test methodology, and the actual instrument you're using for these tests?

Nice that you're doing micro sized batteries as well. I theorise that the low FOM for whoop packs is because of the PH2.0 connector holding them back.

I have some batteries from the first drone delivery operation in the USA, if you want to test one I'll mail it to you. It's not like your typical LiPo. An equivelant 6s 5ah is larger and heavier. This chemistry is smaller and lighter with a penalty to discharge rate. I'd be interested to see what kind of energy density you measure on it. It's important to note that it is LiPo, it's not LiIon, LiFePO4, etc.
edit: just for more context, they're OEM'd by Gens Ace/Tattu for this company.
When I started flying with a Happy Model Snapper 7, I noticed How good those HappyModel batteries were. No others came close to run times I had with those HappyModel 250mah's. That included a couple of 300mah from competing brands. Love your content, and keep up the great and tireless work!
Why were only like 3 brands done? What about Ovonic, CNHL, GNB, maxamps, turnigy, Infinity, etc?
It took 3 to 4 months to get this data gathered. Should I wait longer before releasing it or do you want it now?

My toothpicks I fly gnb, heli-talon faf batteries. On 6s on my racers and freestyle I fly my heli nation talon faf and Tattu r lines!

For your next battery experiment try playing with 18650s... have been playing with them for everything from 3inch 3s acro builds to 13in 6s4p(8s4p soon)xclass. Builds that live within the limited amp rating of a high current 18650 are totally possible. Then add into series of you need more current capacity or go towards lighter builds with better disc loading properties.
As usual JB bringing in some needed objective insights. I agree that while the whole thing has been slow and I'm sure somewhat frustrating for everyone involved good testing needs to be done carefully otherwise it's not all that much better than qualitative assessment.

thank you for the effort. These kind of initiatives are important to allow us to make informed decisions. I was missing this when I started but the limited choice of 6s here made it kinda easy, but from now on I have an idea about the quality of the batteries i buy besides, yep they didn't catch fire.

Batteries are a lucky dip. Consistency is rare between the same model of battery and even from the same batch.

I can tell how exactly will some unknown battery perform after only the very first 5 seconds of charging by observing how much voltage raises when the current raises from zero towards 1C. For example if it is a 4s 1300 mAh battery then I set charging current to 1.3 A and when charging begins the voltage displayed might be 14.21 V. In the same time the current starts to increase starting from zero and as it approaches the target current (1.3 A) the voltage raises because of internal resistance of the battery. Higher the voltage jump --> worse the battery. If the voltage jump is very small (for example from 14.21 V to 14.31 V or to 14.35 V or so) the battery is excellent. It takes just a few tests for every cell count battery type to be able to tell if some battery is excellent or is just average after just a few seconds of "testing". The voltage of low quality 1s 500 mAh battery will at 0.5 A charging current jump from e.g. 3.52 V to 4.15 V and soon it will reach 4.2 V when the balance charger would switch from constant current to constant voltage mode while the voltage of an excellent 1s 500 mAh battery (i.e. Turnigy nano-tech) will at 1C charging current jump from 3.52 V to only about 3.64 V and it would be charged for a *long* time at 500 mA before it reaches 4.2 V when the charging current would start to decrease.

@MAD GRUMPYMAN I mean I haven't tried getting them in from the states yet but the canadian sites i checked basicly onlu have tattu and GNB, not thst im complaining GNB are good batteries. I got the ones I have now from a local place in Vancouver called SNHobbies

Joshua, this research is terrific. The video series is terrific. The spreadsheet is an excellent resource. WHY THE HECK ISN'T THIS ON YOUR WEBSITE ANYWHERE? I spent 30+ minutes scouring your website trying to find this, before I just came back and searched TH-cam for the video and had to dig into the description to get the link to the spreadsheet.
Awesome comparative results, which basically told me that I sussed this out in less time without spending that much. Like the numerical redemption!
Now, about the video... I will be looping this video along with a ben stein audio sample and together I should be able to sleep all night undisturbed and at the perfect level
So give us your rating Mr Bardwell. If you had to buy a bunch of new 6s packs for yourself to fly for the next 6 months, which one would you choose? Whats your #1 and #2 battery with all this information?
Great that we finally get comparable data listed. I guess you are using new packs. I know that this would be horrific effort, but how to deal with aging? - In my subjective "trottle-perception" there is a huge difference in aging of Lipos. Some manufacturers start great but cells degrade faster than others. Is there a way to get this measured?

Super informative! Next, please solve the old age question of how much batts actually degrade when left fully or at 80% or at 50% charge for many days in a row and shorter durations more often spread out over a longer time overall D:
This is pretty well documented. I can't remember, but I've read some in depth white pages.
It is very very clear that a fully charged battery for months is degrading dramatically more than a battery at storage.
At storage they seem to last for years.
Actually, I stored 4 newish batteries, all tattu rlines. One of them I didn't set to storage but kept full. Well it's now a 2s battery as 2 other cells were flat 0 volts. Non recoverable. If I put any small current into the battery the dead cells bake right away

My experience best bang for buck is either CNHL, GNB . Best performance as always is the tattu R line.. Worst in my opinion, sorry RDQ .. But I've bought over 20 RDQ batteries and literally only have 3 left n they are tired AF..
Good work! I'm excited to peruse through the spreadsheet. The only thing i think is missing is some sort of longevity test but that would definitely be a pain to do. Idk if there is a good way to test how quickly they deteriorate without putting tons of actual cycles on them. I just know in personal experience some packs will last only a couple months of racing and some can still be raced almost a year later.
Those lipos are avalible only in US. In Europe we use Tattu, GNB, CNHL please check those

The only make from your testing, available in the UK is tattu. 😫 Guess I'll just stick with hobbyking at least I can afford them.

Too bad that it's mainly local labels which are not available to us outside the US (at least not for a reasonable price). Maybe some more globally available packs in the next iteration, like CHNHL, Thunderpower and GNB.
RDQ, GetFPV, and Tattu were just the first. Now that other vendors see what we're doing, I hope they will be eager to be included.

Hi Josh, it’s always great to “learn something new today”! One interesting thought that occurred to me was if there was a way to quantify this data set into two main groups - racing and free style. Meaning, which batteries would be better suited for a free styler vs a racer based on their average flight patterns. Just a thought.. 🤔 I’ve been a fan of your channel for years now and want you to know that I really appreciate what you do!
How are you going to keep vendors from sending you their best batch of packs, if you are not buying them through a secret buyer?
I personally don't believe vendors keep "special packs" to send to reviewers. I have seen the back end of a lot of operations. There is a warehouse. There is a person running the warehouse. Inventory comes in and goes on the shelf. When they send packs out, the warehouse is told to fulfill an order, and the picker pulls the packs off the shelf and sends them out.
If you feel like vendors are going to cherry pick packs and send them, then ignore these results. There simply is no other way to test this volume of packs, without spending thousands of dollars. My personal opinion is, it's not worth it.
IMO the thing you should really be concerned about is variability in performance from batch to batch. 3 months from now when this batch is sold out and the next batch comes in, will it be the same performance?
I definitely have seen situations where a manufacturer sells a few good sample packs to a store, and then when the store places a big order, the vendor ships worse packs. But once packs are manufactured for retail sale, they just are what they are. There are no "cherry picked" ringer packs at that point.

Joshua Bardwell I’m pretty sure they test those different batches and know exactly on which shelves of the warehouse the good or bad batches are stored. Cherry picking within batches is indeed something they won’t and can’t do. But do keep in mind the results you post will definitely influence sales and many companies will go to great lengths to come out on top. That said its is not like they aren’t selling the good batches and only provide us consumers with the worst possible batteries. Selling good products is still the best way to increase sales. Having positive influencers and negative customers won’t do the trick. Excellent stuff these tests, ty!

Lots of hard work went into this, thank you. Another critical part of battery testing would be to determine cycle longevity. Do you have plans to test how many charge/discharge cycles the batteries get before they poop the bed?
You say the max continuous amp column is the C rating of the battery multiplied by the battery capacity, but it doesn't seem to be the case at all. In the spreadsheet, the formula is actually (6 * (Rated Capacity) / (Cell IR)) ^(1/2), could you explain why ?

i want to say thank you for helping me learn something new . you taught me alot and im still learning .. those beta flight videos i watch before i had my drone come in the mail helped alot. i made a fail safe switch i had a beeper button already so i made it the same button and i didnt like manual mode so i switched it for acro mode and i made my motors spin when my "quad" is armed. i want to do some smooth fpv sooo bad. iv been flying these bugs 2,3, and hubsan x4, my new drone is an arris 250 speed v3 and beta flight is a must lol

At the end of the day some packs hold good power on punch and some sag more. i can tell a good pack with flight time and the the few seconds difference between them all just determines when i land the difference between them is small. Tattu gnb ache cnl funfly v3.0 and how level voltage is when i pit them back on charge. The difference between my best packs and worse is a couple punches per flight. Most freestyler flyers dont care

I fly tattu's and its interesting to see how they aren't always the best in the internal resistance and low current tests, but they blow the competition out of the water in the high load categories

Hi. New to FPV. my quad has XT30 but all my batteries have XT60. Would it be wrong to solder XT60 to my quad so I don't need to use an adapter?
Unique,,, But I see a independent testing service on the horizon. Like UL Lab or Consumer's Reports where they issue their fully tested Certification of compliance to performance. Not a club, but a Keepem Honest Service which FPV retailers can say to their customers "our batteries meet the standards of the "International FPV Battery Certification Corporation." "
