Being Neurodivergent And Living In A Van: My Experience

  • A wee one where I talk about some of the things that I’ve had to contend with as a neurodivergent person who lives a very different lifestyle. Some aspects of this life are made harder but more are made easier, and I think that living this way is a direct product of the way I think and interact with the world.
I hope that by opening up about these things I can help to normalise the experiences of folks who have neurodivergent brains, and show that it’s not a bad thing to have a different perspective.
I hope it can be of use and interesting to people like me who are also on the spectrum and considering/already living nomadically.

Just stumbled upon your video title and had to immediatly watch it, because I recently got diagnosed and I live fulltime in a van (now truck) since nearly 6 years now together with my partner and our dog. We call it our detox-journey, as we did and do leave behind so many stuff, circumstances of life and also way of thinking about us and life in general: we went vegan, got sober, parted from friendships that were‘nt really ones and so an. A really freeing time to stir our lifes in a new, healthier and more fitting for us direction, happy to be able to do that now, we are around 50. I did not know that I‘m neurodivergent when we started and it was a mixture of those aspects you talked about: feeling trapped in solid walls, beeing in one place for longer, always missed beeing in nature when lived in the city. Now we are able to change as we like or need it - and still love it.

Genuinely grateful you make the effort to make these videos. I am the same, except im 51 and have wasted most of my life trying to fit in with alcohol, weed, other stuff, anti Ds and beta blockers, ah well. Ive found right environment, right people, is key as you have said. Best thing I can do, that is free, is proper meditation practice. Not talking about airy fairy meditation as put forward in western culture, im talking about meditation taught by Tibetan Buddhists which is learning to endure discomfort, pain, regardless of the thoughts coming to mind. You are obviously intelligent and know your mind, I wish you well.

thank you so much for sharing. i'm an extremely anxious autistic person who's trying to unlearn bad habits and figure out how to become secure with myself. i feel like living in a building is too expensive and too trapping. i hate how America works and i want to get as close to a life that doesn't feel like it's working against me in every single way. i want to have the means to escape if i need to. i want to travel and not be stuck somewhere. van life feels like the lifestyle most right for me even though i still need to learn so much and i'm still so scared that i can't handle it, and there are so many resources i don't have yet. your words help me know that people like me are successful in doing this and that maybe i can do it if i try hard enough

That is a GREAT explanation of the safety and familiararity of surroundings in the van and yet the stimulation of new places.. to allow introspection and relaxation without the anxiety!

This is why living in a van is on my list of "Places I genuinely wouldn't mind, and think I'd actually enjoy living in."
Growing up, I was brought along on plenty of road trips, and always encouraged to explore. While I have that "Let's Go Places" dawg in me, I'm also on the spectrum and need a place to go back to that gives familiarity, and safety. A van I can to customize to my needs would provide that perfectly, I'd think!
    Great video!
