This musical literally changed my life, and I don’t say that lightly. I haven’t been the same since I discovered it two months ago. I’ve experienced more emotions in these past two months than I had my entire life before this :)
Thank you, Luc Plamondon, Richard Cocciante, Bruno Pelletier, Daniel Lavoie, Garou, Luck Mervil, Patrick Fiori, Julie Zenatti, Helene Segara, and finally, all the ‘nameless’ dancers and acrobats involved in creating this masterpiece.
At this point, I am simply resigned to the fact that I will probably never get to experience something as intense as what this musical evoked in me as a result of art/media/music/theatre (or perhaps as a result of ANYTHING) again. Forever grateful for having experienced this nonetheless.
I will keep coming back to this “just to feel something” forever, until the day my heart ceases to beat. Even my therapist can’t find an explanation for what this musical has done to me…💀

Do not forget, in the thanks, Victor Hugo, who wrote the novel "Notre Dame de Paris" from which was largely inspired this musical. (Little story: this novel, released in 1831, had such a success, that this cathedral which was in pitiful state was finally restored, restoration carried out by the very controversial (but in its brilliant way) Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.)

I finished reading the novel few days ago. My heart is still aching from the tragedy of it all. I tear up every time I think about Esmeralda and her mother, and Quasimodo clinging onto the corpse of his love like a loyal dog, for eternity. Pure beauty. The melody of this song is exactly how reading the novel feels.

    Belle
A quoi me sert encore de prier Notre-Dame?
    Quel
À quoi me sert encore de prier Notre-Dame
    Quel

I like how in the end they all express the same surrender to carnal desire, but its actually the exact words Quasimodo said at the end of the verse. It's like he was the first who, unclouded by ideas of God and sin or of pleasure and infidelity, sang about the consuming fire of his love for Esmeralda herself. It's like his love for her was the purest or maybe the most obsessed of the 3 and that's why he was the most tragic one

We can clearly see that Quasimodo was the only real one in this.
Frollo was a dirty old man obsessed with her. Phoebus was a womanizer who was hanging out with two girls at the same time. But despite being the "monster", Quasimodo truly loved Esmeralda, not only for her body, but for her soul. Maybe it's because of my terrible ears and headphones, but at the end, when they're singing together, I love how certain lines are emphasized by characters.
    Like, they all sing:
What's the point in praying to Notre-Dame?
    But it's Quasimodo's voice that's the loudest.
    They all sing:
They're the ones that don't deserve to live on Earth.
The other two are louder on "deserve to live" whereas Quasimodo's loudest on "Live on Earth."
Again, probably reading too much into it, but I love how they can say the same words but have different meanings.

The way how Frollo stands on his knee gets me every damn time I decide to rewatch this particular piece.
His part is an absolute banger here both acting and voice. How he watches her first with sympathy and some sort of gentleness, but soon after its replaced with a clear feeling that Frollo is doomed (just listen to guitar parts during his part which are leitmotifs of destiny and fate)

    There is the English version:
Belle,is the only word I know that suits her well
When she dances oh,the stories she can tell
A free bird try out her wings to fly away
And when I see her move I see the hell to pray
She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come
And it's no use to pray this prayers to Notre Dame
Tell, who'd be the first to raise his hand and throw a stone
I'd hang him high and laugh to see him die alone
Oh Lucifer, please let me go beyond god's love
And run my fingers through her hair Esmeralda
Belle, there is a demon inside her who came from hell
And he turned my eyes from god,oh,I fell
He put this inside me I'm ashamed to tell
Without my god inside I'm just a burning shell
The same of Eve she has in her I know so well
For want of her I know I'd give my soul to sell
Bell, this gypsy girl is there a soul beneath her skin
And oh she bears the cross of all our human sin
Oh Notre Dame please let me go beyond god's love
Open the door of love inside Esmeralda
Belle, eventhough her eyes seem to lead us to hell
She may be more pure more pure than the words can tell
But when she dances feelings come no man can quell
Beneath her rainbow coloured dress there burns the well
My promised one please let me one time be untrue
Before in front of god and man I marry you
Who would be the man who'd turn from her to save his soul
To be with her I'd let the devil take me whole
I am a man who knows no love
I go to open up the rose Esmeralda
She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come
And it's no use to pray this prayers to Notre Dame
Tell, who'd be the first to raise his hand and throw a stone
I'd hang him high and laugh to see him die alone
Oh Lucifer, please let me go beyond god's love

The best thing in the world is this musical.even the Galaxy. Of the universe. The person who got the chance to watch it live has taken every chance in this life. Also, the most impressive part of the musical is the part where it is "a boire", that is, the beginning of this video. The Belle part begins when Quasimodo is turned, trapped in chains. Artist Garou, meanwhile, has failed to make even the Quasimodo character ugly.

I think that this rather detracts than informs. At the time, lusting for a 16 yo wouldn't have felt terribly creepy, but rather natural. A significant age difference wouldn't have seemed as problematic. Context and intent matters. Hugo presumably didn't intend his story to feel like pedophilia, as it would be perceived nowadays if ages are mentioned. To fit modern perceptions while respecting the original intent, I guess that Esmeralda should be 20 and Phoebus and Frollo maybe 30.

    Paroles :
    Belle
À quoi me sert encore de prier Notre-Dame?
    Quel
À quoi me sert encore de prier Notre-Dame?
    Quel
