- Even with little hope of making an impact against the Germans, the fight for freedom continued. Polish Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto rose up in the face of the horrors of the Nazi Concentration Camps, German army units were needed to deal with the situation. The French Resistance was formed, and with the Dambuster Raids attacking the Industrial Ruhr, the Allied progress although was slow but sure.

This was my mothers war. As a surgical ward sister with the Queen Alexandra’s Own Nursing Corp, she was in charge of 2 max facial surgical wards in a tented hospital, on the front line. She nursed the injured from all sides before they were sent up line for further treatment. She moved with the 8th army from Tunisia to Sicily, to Italy, piecing people together. Her war ended when they arrived in Rome and the war ended. By the way, on her way out from Scotland to North Africa, her troop ship sank after being torpedoed. She couldn’t swim, but floundered around in the sea until rescued the following morning and turfed out on a beach, and immediately marched off to her post to start work. No post traumatic counselling for these stalwarts.

Greetings from Poland, I live only 30 km from the former Auschwitz Birkenau camp, which the Germans established in the Polish city of Oświęcim and the neighboring village of Brzezinka. For the purposes of the camp, the Germans also established sub-camps in other neighboring towns of Oświęcim. For example in the nearby town of Rajsko or Monowice. The Nazis also used a coal mine in Brzeszcze for the purposes of the camp.

This is why I stress the importance of history to my children. As an individual who had family members on both sides, including those who served in the SS and Panzergrenadier, showing my children the cost of dehumanization is very important to me. Elie Wiesel's 'Night' is mandatory reading at age 10. Schindlers List is mandatory watching at age 13. And I tell them that this is the true cost of complacency and the banality of evil. I will not hide the truth from my children so when they face these realizations as an adult, it won't be such a shock as to what human beings, all human beings, are capable of.

Peu après l’arrivée de la 4e division de montagne et des groupes de tabors, le CEF réussit son plus bel exploit de la campagne en jouant un rôle majeur dans l’ouverture de la route de Rome : l’offensive générale, qui va aboutir à la prise de la capitale italienne, est lancée simultanément par la VIIIe armée britannique, placée sur le flanc droit, par la Ve armée américaine, sur la gauche, et par le CEF au centre, avec, pour fer de lance, les deux divisions marocaines et les tabors, et, en appui, la 3e division algérienne du général de Monsabert et la ire division française libre du général Brosset.Clark est si impressionné par cette victoire qu’il donne au CEF l’ordre de contrôler l’ensemble du secteur de Lucas. De plus, la capture de prisonniers ne les intéresse pas outre mesure…

In WWII, there was no such thing as “Russia’s army”. Any historian who uses that wording should be disqualified. It was the Soviet army of the USSR meaning it consisted of soldiers of a multitude of ethnicities, Russians being just one of them. The Soviet army ranks also included 6 million Ukrainians, and because for decades idiotic historians have been calling it “the Russian army”, now Ukraine has to fight Russia’s propaganda to have its role in the fight against the Nazis duly recognized.

I'm not Polish, but I feel a great respect for the Polish People. The Germans "bruitalized" Poland going through to Russia. They were "brutalized" again when the Russian Military was "chasing" Germans back out of Poland. This Nation never really accepted Communism. Today, they are a truly, free Country...a good example for the rest of the world!!!
