My father was a survivor of Sobibor. Spent his life traveling around the world lecturing about the revolt at Sobibor until the age of 90.

I saw "NOS er reed een trein naar Sobibor" from Jules Schelvis on Dutch television and it had an enormous impact on me. I bought his books and read them several times, he was such a beautiful person of such integrity. Despite what happened to him and Rachel, his first love, he had no hate. In fact his life works besides telling the world about Sobibor and the Holocaust, was warning what can happen as a result of hate. But I'm afraid the world hasn't learned a thing because polarisation and hate has become worse than ever.

There's a reason why most of the Holocaust survivors come from such camps like Auschwitz. Auschwitz unlike trebleka or sobibor was a work camp. If they send you to the latter two, your chances of survival were... basically non existent since they were straight up death camps.

It's happening again, with the social opinion of "illegal aliens" getting more and more violent, also Trump-type language against people critical of American issues, leading to racial violence such as the church massacre in South Carolina.

Well, I have difficulty believing some of it. Particularly, that they cremated thousands of bodies per day in brick ovens. My sister works at a crematorium and having learned from her what it takes to burn just one body down to cremains it seems impossible to cram brick ovens full and get same results. I do believe millions died, probably more from sickness, exposure and starvation. From mass shootings and then burial. I have doubts about gas chamber and ovens. It doesn't add up.

      @Badbaby72 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@kina18 I am certain that the methods of murder were varied. Your sister works at a regulated crematorium. The Nazis had no oversight, no regulations, no holds barred approval to cremate anyone they wanted. I am certain that they got creative enough to pull it off.

It is important to remember that Russian citizens were also murdered and persecuted by their own government. Some figures put Stalins purges responsible for as many as 30 million Russians deaths. Mau Zeedung also "caused" the deaths of many more in his second five year plan. That number reaches an unbelievable 55 to 60 million Chinese citizens. Almost the same ammount of deaths as the total deaths world wide in the second world war. And as for sheer cruelty the medical experiments camp in Japanese controlled China in that vile Unit 731 exceeds anything the Nazi's did to the Jews or the Slavs, the Gypsies and the homosexuals. It is down to Jewish wealth and access to movie making , magazines, books and documentaries like this that a skewed image of world inhumanity tends to lean toward the Jewish holacaust.

    "You who live safe
    In your warm houses,
You who find, returning in the evening,
    Hot food and friendly faces:
Consider if this is a man
    Who works in the mud
    Who does not know peace
Who fights for a scrap of bread
Who dies because of a yes or a no,
Consider if this is a woman,
    Without hair and without name
With no more strength to remember,
Her eyes empty and her womb cold
    Like a frog in winter.
    Ponder that this had been:
I commend these words to you.
    Carve them in your hearts
    At home, in the street,
    Going to bed, rising;
    Repeat them to your children.
Or, may your house fall apart,
    May illness impede you,
May your children turn their faces from you".

This episode is making me physically sick. The inhumanity shown these people is just staggering. My heart is heavy thinking of what those people went through. The pain, the hunger, the horror, the degradation. Yet in all that there is dignity of the soul.
One story I want to relate is that of Mary and Morris Weinrib. They are the mother and father of Rush frontman and bassist, Geddy Lee. They were both in Auschwitz together before Morris was moved to Bergen Belson. Mary explained to Rush drummer and lyricist, Neil Peart, what it was like in the camps. She explained, "We always wondered if anyone else was alive outside the fences." She told of how her mother was determined to keep her family alive. That was Mary, her sister, and the mother. Sadly, Mary's brother and father didn't survive. Mary and what was left of her family were liberated when the American's came in. Morris was also liberated and promptly traveled back to Auschwitz to see if he could find Mary. When he got back, he did find her. They were married in the camp. Both made their way after their release to Canada where they settled down in Toronto where Geddy, his brother Alan, and sister Cythia were born. Neil Peart wrote a song for Rush's "Grace Under Pressure" album called "Red Sector A." Here are the lyrics and I'll link the actual song.
    "Red Sector A"
All that we can do is just survive
All that we can do to help ourselves is stay alive
All that we can do is just survive
All that we can do to help ourselves is stay alive
    Ragged lines of ragged grey
    Skeletons, they shuffle away
    Shouting guards and smoking guns
Will cut down the unlucky ones
I clutch the wire fence until my fingers bleed
A wound that will not heal, a heart that cannot feel
Hoping that the horror will recede
Hoping that tomorrow, we'll all be freed
    Sickness to insanity
    Prayer to profanity
Days and weeks and months go by
Don't feel the hunger, too weak to cry
I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gate
Are the liberators here, do I hope or do I fear?
For my father and my brother, it's too late
But I must help my mother stand up straight
Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings to survive?
Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings to survive?
I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gate
Are the liberators here, do I hope or do I fear?
For my father and my brother, it's too late
But I must help my mother stand up straight
Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings to survive?
Are we the last ones left alive?

A similar extermination occurred with the Khemer Rouge in Cambodia, although not as huge. This extermination of the Jews by the Germans has no parallel in human history. So cold and so insensible and so terrifying. The Germans stole and raped and did all the worst crimes against the defenseless Jews. I do not know how can we still live with that memory.

The title suggest responsibility of Polish people, while it was the Germans responsible for these deaths. Moat of whom were actually Polish citizens.
And remember this: Poland was the ONLY country occupied by Germany where there was an immediate death sentence for the ENTIRE family harboring Jews. Yet many Poles hid their Jewish neighbors from German savages. My own family did too. No other nation did that much to help and no other paid a greater price.

But teachers can download videos and cut these images out for kids, so I’d tend to agree. I’m a huge advocate for protecting children from trauma. So that just comes to mind.
That being said, I also think they’re trying to be sensitive to potential survivors and their descendants.
I don’t know exactly how I feel about it, personally. Images are powerful, but descriptions are weapons. Sometimes the words are enough. Idk hard to say.

This excellent production has some important imperfections:
    1. Jan Karski is presented as having "escaped from the Warsaw Ghetto". True, but the statement fails to explain that Karski was NOT Jewish. He was a member of the Polish Resistance who voluntarily entered the Ghetto to see what actually was happening. THEN, Karski escaped and as part of the Polish Underground used the organizations network to travel to Britain with the news of the Holocaust. He was also the one who informed Roosevelt.
    2. Witold Pilecki was another member of the Polish Resistance who acted like Karski but did so in Auschwitz. He also organized a resistance within Auschwitz before he escaped and informed the Polish Underground which then informed Britain.
    3. The Polish Resistance had a formal government organization to help the Jews in Poland. "Zegota" should have been included in the episode.

When the narrator states that nothing like this had ever happened before in history he is mistaken. 5 million Ukrainians were starved to death or sent to labor camps under Stalin. This happened in the early thirties and was known as the Holodomor. And how many more people did he murder during the purges in the thirties leading up to WW2? It is estimated that roughly 2 million people were executed during this period. The people who invented and enforced the principals of Bolshevism on the Russian and Ukrainian people leading to millions of deaths were primarily of Jewish origin. This is one of the reasons why German and Eastern Europeans disliked Jews so much. They equated them with Russian Bolshevism
