Hey, man - just had to comment: This tutorial has a ton of great stuff in it, but the really great stuff is at the end. I think even intermediate players need that message and encouragement to "play by ear" -- and to feed their ears by doing a lot of listening. You're right that the world of jazz pedagogy has gotten a little nuts with theory/scales (especially modes)/formulaic playing -- so much so, that when somebody comes along and just plays a damn melody (fewer notes, more judicious use of those "spicy" notes (blue 5, etc), *AND* demonstrates evidence of a lot of listening) it really stands out - in a good way! I'm still working through your video catalogue, so I may find that you've posted a lot on this, but if you haven't already put this message out in 100+ videos, I'd say there's room for more!
I have a question, too. As a horn player, I feel I am always playing catch-up to my "chord-player" colleagues. . . You used mostly 7th chords when you presented the melody, but switched to mostly rootless voicings during your solo. Was that to keep the presentation more elementary, or was that because the melody called for it? (I ask because I'm trying to used hipper LH voicings with this melody and I can't quite make it work -- or, at least I can't make it work all of the time. All of Me is another tune I have a hard time playing in a "hip" way, and many other standards (especially older tunes) give me the same issue.
Hi Tony, I really enjoy your videos.. thank you. But, please raise the volume level on export... I have the volume at max on my phone and it's too quiet to make out what you're saying. I can raise the volume on my studio monitors.. but then we all have phones these days and there may be other people missing out on your great experience as a jazz pianist. Thank you.
