    You know, there is a surprising amount of irony in Doug Walker reviewing a movie about a man pushing everyone away, isolating himself, becoming an utter dickbag, only to then be forced by someone higher than him to get on the stage and keep doing the show even when he clearly doesn't want to.

    I remember one time where Doug Walker said that a lot of his "comedy" is inspired from the looney tunes. You can kind of tell it at times. The issue is that that kind of comedy really only works in animation where you can exaggerate emotions and reactions not in real life. Thus it looks cringey

      I can't stand his approach to comedy honestly. It's really weird, I never laugh at any of it. I mean I used to laugh in the older reviews sometimes, but in all the new skit shit it's just not funny at all and comes off really awkward and... For lack of a better word 'cringey'. I don't know what it is, his weird face and body language or his complete lack of proper comedic timing, but it just always feels off. He takes like huge pauses after the 'jokes' and it just fucking drags on and on and I always have to look away in second hand embarrassment, I've never experienced a reaction like that to comedy outside of those cringe compilation things. It's fucking magical how not funny he is, I can barely comprehend it myself.

    • @cloudstrife4534
      @cloudstrife4534 5 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      Daniel young He thinks all comedy comes from suffering. ALL comedy, not just a subsection of comedy like in reality. And he gets super defensive when anyone tries to challenge his stubborn notions with facts on the wide variety of comedy that uses other framing besides misery and embarrassment. I remember that even the other people on the site were mystified about this weird view he latched on to, and how he continually chose that hill to die on. I believe Linkara mentioned being annoyed by it several times in passing, way back when he(and most others) were still on the site pre-2018.
      Looney Toons are still great to this day, and those cartoons aren't a bad source of inspiration for comedy. But I feel like Doug forgot what made Daffy funny sometime ago. So he just repeats the "loud and unlucky" traits again and again, with none of the comedic timing or witty banter that made Daffy iconic. I don't know how I put up with NC's screeching for as long as I did. But I can now safely say that him using Looney Toons as an inspiration has become a mockery of Looney Toons themselves.

    • @KingThrillgore
      @KingThrillgore 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Exaggerated body humor works for cartoons because its a juxtaposition of animal characters behaving humanly. It doesn't work when its a human doing it, because you can expect it, and the stark reality feels more like cringe; as opposed to seeing Daffy Duck get his beak blown off. Some comedians embrace the absurdist nature of cringe really well (see: Eric Andre). Doug is nowhere close to Eric in delivery, humor, or even self awareness. He's an angry child with an After Effects license, a book on Blender, and a For Dummies book on comedy.

    • @kayleighbrown459
      @kayleighbrown459 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      See, I'd argue against that honestly, the live action Loony Tunes stuff worked really well before when he was JUST reviewing stuff from his own childhood, cartoons, the Mario brothers movie stuff like that. His cartoony actions were funny and still are when he tackles the right subject matter.
      But that style of humour doesn't work with the fucking wall.

    Imagine being ignorant of the impact of WWII on entire generations of British people, from the children evacuated to strange homes and families dealing with the losses of their fathers, brothers, husbands, and children, and not understanding that schooling in the UK for decades until, like, the eighties, involved physical and mental abuse of the children, and then deciding to "review" a piece of work so intimately connected to these two situations due to the personal impact they've had on the author of the piece while making no effort whatsoever to understand the context behind the piece and thus remaining completely ignorant of all of the above.
    Actually, no need to imagine it, Doug Walker's already done it.

He embraces the stupidity in his videos, plays it for laughs, doesn't try to make it into an epic when it's not. He just tries to make people laugh and entertain them. Plus, he's usually got Other Joe, and Alex with him when he's reviewing things, and they all play off each other well. Even when sometimes, his jokes aren't that funny, you at least get what he's trying to do, trying to say. Plus, Other Joe sometimes upstages Angry Joe, and adds to the video, making it something to remember. Not every one of his skits works, but at least when you watch an Angry Joe video, you know what you're getting into, you know that you're watching a guy, reviewing something, like a movie or a game. And when Joe tries to get serious, it may not always work out, but when IT does, it really works, and you feel like you can relate to what he's telling us. And, he's also been trying to build like; this media outlet type thing, where he has his own news show, along with his usual reviews. He knows what he's doing. But the nostalgia critic? Like Alex and the rest of the guys here say, he hasn't changed at all, hasn't tried to improve himself, still thinks what was funny back in like, 2005-2006 would STILL be funny today, when they're NOT. It's just bad, Doug. And I'm almost ashamed and embarrassed for even having been a fan of his for such a long time, only to recently realize how awful doug truly is. He's just so bland and cliche and corny, in all the wrong ways. Are we sure he's even playing up a character for the ridiculousness and absurdity of it, or is this how doug really is? I certainly think so now.

    The Another Brick in the Wall segment was by far the most offensive part of it with how far the critic missed the mark. He thinks the song's about how high school sucks and he should just "Grow some balls" (Because that's not a problematic stance to take). But he forgets, Roger Waters didn't go to a modern day American high school, that's not what the song is about. He and Syd Barrett went to a post-war era English secondary boys school where the teachers were both physically and mentally abusive to students. Any creative or independent thought was beaten out of you, both figuratively and very literally (Caning was still a common form of punishment).

    I’m only twenty minutes in so I don’t know if you mention it later on but I wanted to bring up the fact that The Wall wasn’t only the story of Roger Waters but also Syd Barrett. When you see Pink sitting vacantly in front of a television with a cigarette burning untouched to his finger tips, that’s Syd. Waters would often find him in that exact position close to the end of his career. Syd was Waters’ best friend since they were toddlers. He literally watched this man he’d known for nearly his entire life turn into an empty, lifeless person picked apart by drugs and stardom. A lot of what Roger Waters wrote (Wish You Were Here, Welcome To The Machine) is also in reference to him loosing his friend in such a tragic way. That’s part of what makes Nostalgia Critic’s “review” of this film particularly egregious to me. He’s not only misinterpreting and shitting on this personal expression of Roger Waters’ life but of Syd Barrett’s as well.

It's "school is currently run as a pipeline to industry, using both physical and verbal abuse to shape children into workers, rather than foster curiosity and imagination in a manner that is conducive to creating a more ethical and empathetic society. This increasing industrialization of society is the same process which fosters fear, hatred, and fascistic politics."

      @@djtripnosys Either you don't know what the word rambling means, or you simply decided not to read a single paragraph and dismiss it as rambling. I didn't even say "it's good for these reasons." I don't really give a shit whether or not you like it. I'm explaining the simple fact that a more detailed and nuanced position was being put forward than the simple "school sucks" idea that any person has.
      Art is subjective in the sense that how messages are relayed will strike people differently, and people may find meanings and symbols within art that were not intended but still have some clear logic as to how that person got to that position, or that you may ignore the intended messages entirely because specific parts of the piece capture you in alternative ways. But subjectivity in art can only take you so far. If a person argues for a reading of an art piece that they have no real capacity to backup, or shows that they clearly did not pay any attention to the intended messages, then their opinion can be dismissed.
      If you want to tell me that a movie like the Dark Knight is actually about aliens, you're free to do so, but I won't take it seriously. And I will dismiss Doug's takes on this film just as quickly because he was so unwilling to engage with it on anything but the most surface level. The connections between the specific education system Roger Waters grew up with, industrialization, and the growing fascist sentiments in the UK were so unsubtle it's actually pathetic Doug managed to misinterpret them. Especially when he says that bullshit of "this is vague enough that you can put anyone's face here" when the specific ideas and political opinions that were being related to fascism were not vague in any manner, they were specifically called out as anti-semitism, racism in general, and homophobia. These were specific ideas being criticised and related to fascism, which is simple and straightforward because those are actual sentiments held by fascist groups, and yet Doug somehow misses those as "vague."
      He also called the Goodbye Blue Sky sequence "World War Two with monsters" and said it was silly, which is the most unashamedly disinterested thing anyone could ever say about it. It was not World War Two with monsters, it just was World War Two.
      But of course if one paragraph was too much for you the first time I don't imagine you'll read all of this.

Don’t the exact ones but Tommy was released a couple years during a time where the Oscars were experimented with the idea of allowing the best score to incorporate mostly adapted/ previously made music, but they later just condensed the Oscars into one and made it so 60% of the score had to be completely original, hence why it’s called the Best Original Score Oscar. Which was bad timing as the first condensed Best Score Oscar was introduced in 1982, the year The Wall was released, so if the movie was released a year earlier or the condensed Oscar was introduced a year later, it most likely would’ve won that Oscar.

At least the director had a vision, the talent, and original idea to make a product. It didn’t come out spectacular but at least he sent a message and worked to get his art out there. Doug is lazy and would make better products if he wasn’t so far up his ass and was actually man enough to take constructive criticism.

    2) The second mistake was that sometimes he did these kind of parodies that almost no one wanted to watch. People wanted to see THE REVIEW of the actual movies, not his parodies.
    Well, with "The Wall" he just decided to commit BOTH mistakes at the maximum level.

      Yes, Doug very publicly wanted to move on and produce Demo Reel instead, which was basically just the skits. It was *extremely* unpopular and apparently almost bankrupted Channel Awesome because it turned out the Nostalgia Critic was the most popular show on the site, so not even a year later they brought back the NC but integrated all of the skits and actors from Demo Reel as a “compromise” (since Doug had apparently been pushing for them to make Demo Reel for years and was incredibly upset at how poorly received it was). Then Blip shutdown and kicked Doug back to TH-cam where he had to start fighting Content ID again, which he decided to do by just turning the number of skits way up until eventually the clipless reviews happened, and those got enough views (out of sheer novelty, everyone assumed they were supposed to be a one-off) that he made them a regular thing, finally resulting in the Wall as the ultimate summation: a bad remake, disguised as a parody, disguised as a review.
      And of course all of this ignores the fact that even Doug’s original style of video has fallen out of popularity since the late 2000s, with legitimate reviewers now offering hard hitting critiques of films and satire channels with far bigger budgets producing higher-quality parodies, all just a few clicks away from the NC’s videos. The Nostalgia Critic’s continued existence in the modern age of TH-cam, seemingly unchanged from the moment he opted to reboot the show, remains utterly baffling to me.

      @@ZuluRomeo that review actually proves my point even more that Doug doesn’t know wtf he’s talking about, because he really went in on the fact one of the guys hanging off the railing shouted “I can’t swim!” like it was an egregious inaccuracy when it wasn’t. It’s so accurate, in fact, that it’s directly lifted from the first-hand experience of a survivor that was consulted for the movie lol.
      Knowing how to swim wasn’t a requirement for joining the US Navy before WW2. That seems counterintuitive, but you’re not doing any swimming on a boat unless something goes very wrong lmao, and for a very long time the idea was that knowing how to swim only prolongs the inevitable in the event of a sinking or being thrown overboard.

      Garuu popka FENNAH only made 1 tweet calling out an asshole who’s regurgitating what JAR Media said, even using the “edgy furry oc” insult. On his TH-cam channel, he’s very calm and respectful. Night Star has been lying by exaggerating what actually happened. Not helping is that he’s copying and pasting his comment, but with minor edits, even saying essentially “oh and his animations are shit.”

    I remember Doug once saying that his mom was an Opera singer. So I guess he feels like he’s a capable singer by proxy.
    It’s like growing up listening to classical music and then deciding you’re also a classical musician.

    Oh God, he ACTUALLY did it? I remember watching his commentary for his Phantom of the Opera "review" where he mentioned that he had a "musical review trilogy" (being Moulin Rouge, Les Miserables, and Phantom of the Opera), and that if he were to do another one, it would be The Wall (since he'd wanted to do it for years but wasn't quite sure how he'd do it). And given how those ones turned out... oh boy.
    -For Moulin Rouge, he had a semi-ensemble review (mostly just cameos with some minor opposing viewpoints) where he criticized the story, cinematography, and song choice. Fair enough, but a few points: a) the story is based on a famous play (La Boheme), so the writers aren't wholly to blame, b) the cinematography is a staple of Baz Luhrmann films (though some people have mixed opinions on his filmmaking), and c) it's a jukebox musical, which is really up to your personal taste. Overall, not the worst, but more pushback from the others and acknowledgement of its good points would be appreciated. The worst thing I can say about it is that it initially stopped me from wanting to watch the movie, though now I really want to so I can make a judgment myself.
    -For Les Miserables, he had an ensemble review. Aside from its many cameos, the main three have differing opinions on the film. One guest likes the movie as an adaptation of the musical for reasons I can't remember, the other dislikes the movie because of its cinematography and its representation of the source material, and Doug pulls out his self-proclaimed "middle-of-the-road bullshit" to say that he's in the middle, saying it has good and bad points without much elaboration. Again, far from the worst, but its commentary on the film, especially from the songs, is very shallow.
    -For Phantom of the Opera, he did a clipless review (yay) with yet another creator where they just reenact the movie. Its criticisms are either a) contained within the songs, or b) someone points out something weird a la CinemaSins and someone else explains it in an incredibly forced way (ie "Why is there a horse in the sewer?"). Even then, its criticisms aren't anything new, just stuff you would have heard of a million times (most of the people can't sing, Butler is a bad Phantom, Minnie Driver is good, the cinematography is mostly bland, etc). Probably the worst out of the "trilogy". Honestly, just watch Lindsay Ellis' video on it for an actual analysis.
    Sorry for the text block, but good God I have so much I could talk about regarding Doug. I'm glad you watched this review so I didn't have to.
    EDIT: About that Slipknot cameo: THIS ISN'T EVEN THE FIRST TIME HE'S DONE IT! He and his son also appeared at the end of his Sorcerer's Apprentice review (where he just so happens to promote his tour). Apparently his son's a fan of NC. God help us all.

      Honestly the biggest laugh I remember from _any_ of those is the part in his Moulin Rouge review where Phelous shows up out of nowhere and starts... singing? growling? Whatever it is, it’s actually kinda hilarious even if it has very little to do with the movie itself.

      Anywho, I thought your thoughts were interesting to hear and I wouldn't mind to hear more. Also yea, I remember reading his son was a fan of NC, but not too sure about the dad. I think I heard he was also one as well, but I feel like that may be a rumor at best in till there's something proving that statement.

    Now, I THINK the reason Corey Taylor played the Spongebob theme at the end is because someone at Channel Awesome saw like, the ONE clip of Corey playing it at a live show like, once. And was like "holy shit that's brilliant, that's how we end the review."
    Which honestly sounds more fucking stupid than just doing it for no reason
