First of many videos to come like this as I build up to what will hopefully be my best hill climbing shape ever in 2023. Please let me know if there is any content you'd like to see, alongside the normal videos in the comments. Thanks for watching!
Pleased to see you are prepping early, September 16/17 is the Somerset Triple. Crowcombe on the Saturday afternoon, then on Sunday Porlock main road followed by the Porlock Toll Road. Happy training!
Ed, great insight into your thinking. I look forward to watching how your body adapts to basically recovering at fractionally below threshold, only to unleash a "watt dump" 30 seconds or a minute later.
Cracking pace on that road Ed 💪, I hope you enjoyed the drop down the Meinciau to the village. I used to turn right after the crossing onto the Carway/Trimsaran road and that first "dig" out of the village never got any easier. 👍
Whilst I'm not really a climber, despite living within 4 miles of 'the old shoe', and have not really had any interest in following hillclimbs in the past, having rode out to watch the last hillclimb championship at said 'old shoe' climb, it now commands my attention as to how it's not just a case of 'thrashing it up a hill as fast as you can', into a far more scientific approach based on the length, undulation and severity of the climb. I'm completely hooked now, just watching and following it,🥵 of course.
Good stuff Ed! Look forward to seeing you around Somerset HC's in 2023. Better each year is such a motivator for me too! A lot of people set monthly and annual milage targets, have you any thoughts on setting elevation targets instead, as a motivator and way of improving climbing? Good luck and thanks for promoting hill climbing so well! Cheers, Ben.
Hey Ben! Thanks for the comment. I have thought about it in the past but to be honest it’s not something you lose. I’m blessed with climbs everywhere but to always be seeking them would get tiresome and potentially knock the fun out of it for me, I don’t really need motivating in that sense
I am not sure if you have sponsors but it would be amazing to see you do international climbs like Yang Ming Shan or Wuling in Taiwan and other parts of the world.
Is the 'finishing strong' you trying to emulate Feather's massive watt dumps at the end of climbs? Surely finishing with a burst means you would have had energy in the tank, energy which could have been better spent at a potentially more decisive part of the climb?
That’s the obvious observation, and correct to a point. But what you’ll sometimes find is that it’s trainable. A bit like how no matter how tired the world class sprinters are they will still smoke us in a sprint. So same applies here. I’m not sure how long you have been following the channel but my win in ‘19 I was able to do the “watt dump” and this is something I need to regain. Using the power correctly in areas throughout the climb is a skill I often talk about, but this years hill climbs will require strong finishes.
@@edlaverack plus a negative split in a TT (or positive power split) is often a good way to win - other people are slowing more than average at the end where you are improving kinda deal.
0:22 wahooo 😂👍🏻 2023 is looking good !

Would say if you can sponsor it, he will be more than happy.

I admire the motivation and focus, but October is 6 months away. Dont you risk too much too soon, flying in june, toast in October?
6 months is nothing. Starting to visualise everything now, keeping a lid on the performances until it matters
