Do 'Cathy's Clown' and 'Wake Up Little Suzie' by the Everly Brothers. Speaking of having an impact on those that followed, the list of famous acts that credit the Everly Brothers for influencing them is long: the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, Neil Young, Paul Simon, etc.

Their biggest hits included "Wake Up Little Susie", "Bye Bye Love", "Bird Dog", "Problems", "Cathy's Clown", and "(Till) I Kissed You". Amber, you mentioned the reference to the exclamation of "gee whiz" -- that's how we talked back in the 50's. I was born in 1950 so I was just a little kid when all this music started out in the 50's. Like this song, it was 1958 (I think) so I was 8. So my first "loves" were Elvis, Ricky Nelson, the Everly Brothers, among others just like them. And I wasn't the only one! Almost all girls back then were "in love" with all of these beautiful artists, just like me! My parents didn't use profanity in front of me and my sisters, we didn't hear it in school, church nor on TV. It was forbidden to use profanity on TV shows and we only had 3 channels. So, of course, there was no profanity in the music that was on the radio or TV. I probably didn't hear an actual curse word until I was in high school and not very often. So, when we did hear a bad word, it was jarring and almost foreign. Consequently, when we heard music that used bad words or explicit language about sex, it was judged against all the music that we grew up on and it wasn't received well with lots of us "boomers." I'm not talking about all of us, of course, but a significant amount of us to be sure. It started with hard rock which pretty much got started in the late 60's and got bigger and bigger. Now, I like some rock, but if it is too raunchy, it's just not for me. It's the same with other genres, like hip hop and rap. If it gets too raunchy, i'm not a fan.
Anyhow, enough of that . . . loved you listening to the Everly Brothers, I knew you'd love them, too! Now you need to listen to Ricky Nelson! You'll flip for him, he's so very cute! I used to watch him on his parents' TV show and dream of marrying him someday! I wasn't yet in my teens but he already was a teen! Just . . . oh, you'll just have to see him for yourself! I love the Everly Brothers, SO many great songs. Cathy's Clown, Devoted To You, So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad), and many others.
Another 50s song to react to, is MOVE IT by Cliff Richard and the Shadows. It came out in 1958, and it was the UKs first real Rock and Roll song. He was, like many other influenced by seeing Elvis, and wanting to copy him, and developed his own sound, with the help from his band The Shadows, who had several UK number ones, on their own and also with Cliff. In the early 60s, the Shadows were even knocking their own songs off of the number one spot, with a song that had them and Cliff on. But it all started with MOVE IT.
Cliff has just turned 81,and is still singing and touring, and is called the Peter Pan of Pop! He's had hits in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s.

Yup, The Everly Brothers had matching vocal tones that you normally only get with sibling groups. And, many of their hits were written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant and were more intricate than you'd notice at first glance... the lines often rhymed in the middle as well as at the end. And, their vocal arranger wrote harmonies that used a lot of fifth intervals instead of just the usual thirds. That gave their singing a haunting quality that was copied by The Beatles and other British Invasion groups.

Tbs Every Brothers are like, part of the water of early rock & roll...yes, wholesome, yes smooth and mellow but oh so relatable..."Wake Up Little Susie ", and " Cathy's Clown" both play out in different ways the feelings and fears of teenage angst, as does this tune here...this
That being said, The Beatles were tapping into that too, with "Love Me Do" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand"...
" Silhouettes" by The Rays does that too, and then there's "Teenager In Love" by Dion And The Belmonts that puts a cherry on that particular sundae, lol...

'Bye, Bye, Love' (their first hit) 'Should We Tell Him', 'Bird Dog', 'Wake Up Little Suzie', 'Claudette', 'When Will I Be Loved', and 'Problems', in the 50's. 'So Sad', 'Temptation', That's Old Fashion', 'Cryin' in the Rain' 'Cathy's Clown', and Bowling Green', in the early to late 60's. 'Not Fade Away', 'Green River', 'Ridin' High', and 'Lay It Down', in the 70's. 'On The Wings of a Nightingale', 'Following The Sun', 'Always Drive a Cadillac', 'Amada Ruth', 'Born Yesterday', and 'Why Worry', in the 80's. Hundreds of songs! They were actually brothers and came before The Righteous Bros., Simon and Garfunkel and other duels. They heavily influenced many groups, including the Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Who. He says “I need you so that I could die” implying that the only way that he’s going to eventually die having lived a fulfilled life is if he gets this girl, however he can’t so he’d rather stay in bed and “dream his life away” so he could be with her.
