Pet Sounds was considered one of the best albums of the 60's and a huge among loyal fans.

The intro strings was Brian Wilson plucking the open grand piano strings. He played a lot with sounds.

I think you are thinking of You Still Believe in Me , the track that follows Wouldn't it be nice on PEt Sounds. It has an intro of open piano strings being struck by paper clips.

@@ChasBeauregarde What is your source? The Pet Sounds sessions are fairly well documented - Al De Lory is playing tack piano on the track in a regular way I believe. th-cam.com/video/ofByti7A4uM/w-d-xo.html or check the wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wouldn%27t_It_Be_Nice

Ahh you made me do my homework. As you stated in the Wikipedia article "The harp-like instrument heard in the introduction is a 12-string mando-guitar plugged directly into the recording console." Good call, my mistake. I misremembered something from the "Wrecking Crew" documentary.

Instrumental tracking for "Wouldn't It Be Nice" began at 7:00 p.m. on January 22, 1966, at Gold Star Studios. Wilson produced the session with engineer Larry Levine. The calliope-like instrument heard in the opening bars is an electric 12-string guitar plugged directly into the recording console.

This is a concept album/ rock opera. This first song sets the stage for innocence and optimism. The last song is disappointment. And the middle is fantastic looks at life’s struggles and joys.

I never cared for Beach Boys, but "Pet Sounds" is the Mona Lisa of Rock-N-Roll, friend!
Was inspiration for Beatles Sgt Pepper album! Made Paul McCartney cry!😅
    Rock On, mofo!

That beginning bit...a very enigmatic sound made that way on purpose by Brian Wilson in the studio...he was a visionary soundscaper.

Listen to the stereo version of this to really hear and appreciate all of the instruments (often hidden in the mono mix) like the two accordions, tympani, 12 -string guitar, etc., as well as the full and developed background and harmony vocal parts.

My correction here: The harp-like instrument heard in the introduction is a 12-string mando-guitar plugged directly into the recording console.

Not to spoil your enjoyment but the Beach Boys did not play the instruments on this recording, only their vocals were added later. Brian Wilson used the session players of what was known as The Wrecking Crew, along with record producer, Phil Spector and his "Wall of Sound" recording technique.
Many of the '60s pop hits by big name bands and artists were actually recorded by the WC. Check out their documentary on TH-cam .
    Very enlightening!
With Peace and Love to all! (Michael)

@sandraandmichaelfield1602 : The Wilson brothers DID play instruments on these "PET SOUNDS" studio recordings.
Brian Wilson - vocals; plucked piano strings on "You Still Believe in Me"; bass guitar, Danelectro bass, and organ on "That's Not Me"; piano on "Pet Sounds"; overdubbed organ or harmonium on "I Know There's an Answer"
Carl Wilson - vocals; lead guitar and overdubbed 12-string electric guitar on "That's Not Me"; 12-string electric guitar on "God Only Knows"
Dennis Wilson - vocals; drums on "That's Not Me"

if you catch the films of the recording sessions Wilson did with the wrecking crew...it'll blow your mind as a musician...and the whole story of this album for that matter...

After the first two verses which are sung by Brian.. comes the slowed down "counter verse" where Mike Love does his only cool thing.. the coolest voice in pop since they invented soda. Nobody ever praises Mike as he's the historical whipping Boy of the group. But he's had his many moments.. as prominent lead singer. There's one song he's credited with writing solo.. Cool Cool Water.. goes like "in an ocean or.. in a glass.. cool cool water is such a gas". If you're deep diving, this would be a weird and cool place to go next. Skipping that stone. It's on Sunflower or Friends or Wild Honey.. or I'm just wrong. But it's there. Mike trying to outdo Brian, in the realm of what one would think of being stereotypical Beach Boys' territory.

4-track tape recorder... no software... no samples... no single note replacements... no synths... no digital drums... no pitch correction... no voice enhancement software... no hatred... no violence... no sexual content... all real. Key changes in a rock song... unheard of. Tempo changes. Pet Sounds... the #1 rated album by many publications... #2 by Rolling Stone. The Mozart of our lifetime. 12 string guitars... mandolins... a cluster of strings. Mellotron.
