- November 11, 2000 on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad steam excursion from Utica’s Union station in Utica, NY to Remsen Station, NY via the Old New York Central Adirondack Division line to Lake Placid.
The New York Susquehanna & Western RR Mikado #142, a 2-8-2 pulling 10 cars up the mountain grade for a steam ride not experienced on this line for 60 years.

Especially enjoyed the run-bys! 142 struggling up the grade in Remsen was also a highlight!!
A real steamer, in my neck of the woods? Running on the railroads back then? That is awesome!! I may not have seen a steam locomotive running in real life yet, but man....seeing this footage is absolutely amazing!!
We retired in June 2000 and I had no idea that this ran. Ironically, I volunteered as a brakeman/switchman on the ADK for a couple of years. A Mikado!

I rode behind the 142 from North Bergen, NJ to Baird's Farm, NY in October 2000, and also at Phillipsburg, NJ in 2004, 2006, and 2012. I live in PA 20 miles west of Phillipsburg. So now the 142 is a lot closer to me. I wish they could do trips on NS and NJT, though. NS has hosted steam excursions the past few years, and the 142 did run on NJT several times. I'm thinking like a Phillipsburg to Dover, NJ excursion with 142 if something could be worked out with NS and NJT. The NS Washington Secondary sees very little freight traffic, unlike the Lehigh Line that it branches off of by Phillipsburg Union Station which is way busier. Amtrak just had a rare mileage trip through Phillpsburg, it went from NY to Harrisburg via Allentown and Reading, and return via Philly. There were two trips, on Oct 29 and 30.
This me, James Jason's dad. When they first acquired the 142 they ran excursions out of Syracuse to Marathon NY to the Maple Festival with stops at Cortland. They also had a RDC Bud car that traveled between Syracuse University and Destiny Mall only lasted a few years.
The NYS&W # 142 is in the Delaware river railroad today but I did saw the 0-6-0 # 6 in the adirondack scenic railroad.
The "fast run" mentioned in the description is in Barneveld , ( Trenton) NY, not Minetto. Great video, and I continue to watch it. Glad it's still here !

Ironically, the diesel helper (fmr. D&H ALCO C420) is decades older than the 142! 2064 was built for the D&H in the 1960s and the 142 was built in China in 1989.
I noticed the location where the train started struggling making it up the grade. That crossing where the gentlemen mentions Barneveld is the Plank Road crossing just south of Remsen. I wish I knew what the grade % is along that area.
I believe it's somewhere between 1.3% and 1.8%.
