I'm really enjoying your updates James and watching your journey It must be very frustrating at times, but clearly very rewarding and all worth it when you see your buyers driving off and enjoying the cars. As somebody who is considering starting my own used car business, I have so many questions! Please keep these videos coming and best of luck for the coming weeks.
@@alexperrins2835 thank you. Any questions please fire away as it certainly helps when I’m producing the videos. I honestly love it but it’s hard work and the margins really are slim. Anyone who thinks it’s easy will get a reality check very quickly!
I’m watching this at 01:05 in the morning….after a busy day of preparing and selling 3 of my own personal vehicles to start my used car business!! I’m looking forward to uploading my video this weekend. The start of something special 🎉 keep up the good content and hard work mate. You had a lot to do with it so thank you for your last video!!
Really enjoying the diary videos! I'm in the process of setting up a company to buy/sell a few cars, alongside having a full time job, so finding these really insightful. Keep it up 👍
Hi mate new subscriber and have been binge watching you videos! What are you using to record on? Is this an iphone or proper camera as the video quality is excellent.
Hi James, enjoying the updates, can you give some advice regarding warranties, I sell from my driveway but unsure of how and what is covered on a used car, is there a standard form to follow? Any help appreciated, thanks.
So I do self warranties but you need the proper paperwork. Speak to Joel @ Lawgistics.co.uk and his team. They provide the paperwork and a system to put them together at a very affordable rate. Worth investigating
@@carfella7994 yes I think you might be right. The one the garage has was very good at useful for diagnosing. I think that might have to be on the buying list
James i see your lovely Audi getting wet when you washed the skoda. Make sure you don't leave the water on the Audi paintwork to long in the hot sun as it can damage the paintwork. Love the videos.
Another great video mate. Some nice stock you have there too! Im looking at advertising on auto trader as a dealer myself and will need similar amount of slots. I haven't enquired just yet - is it fairly pricey as there's no pricing on their portal? Keep up the good work 👍
Hi James, can i pick your brains and ask if you can recommend any insurance broker? I've just set up my own used car dealership this morning so this is on my list to get in place. Cheers and love the content
@@craiggibbon1985 it wasn’t easy. I used Clegg Gifford in Birmingham in the end but can’t say I’d recommend them. I found it hard to use. The policy is via TradeEx and I like the fact it can me managed online and you can add and remove cars easily. It’s not cheap though… but ask if you can use no claims from your private car insurance as that bought the cost down a lot for me
Is it just my eyes or is the front plate on that red Polo crooked, like the reflective was fed into the printer at an angle? Stuff like that drives me mad, couldn’t leave it 😅
@@CarDealerMagazine sorry 😅 I’m sure normal people don’t notice this stuff. Love the series btw - so much of the motor trade is closed shop to new entrants so laying out the reality of getting started is very useful.
Just had a look at the ad and yes you can see the gap above the text at one end is smaller than the other. I’d change the screws at the same time. New plates and screws with caps do lift a car. It is another expense although you could just add £20 on the price of the car to cover it as it shouldn’t make much difference to the overall sale price unless of course it a .995 for example and pushes over in to the next thousand price band.
I offer a three month warranty on all cars. I self warranty these cars and put money aside for each sale in case it is needed however I am looking at a warranty partner to help with longer warranties for some cars.
Still don't understand why car aircon needs regassing when you can have a normal aircon unit at home work fine for 10s of years without any attention at all. On your ad you had serviced in 2026 as well rather than 2016
@@dometick thank you. I thought I changed that! I find air con regassing something I’ve had to do on most cars I’ve bought. I don’t think anybody does it routinely!
This is one thing people don't tall about in these videos. What do you do about tax and insurance if you're looking to sell cars for profit. Obviously these things are going to eat into the margin as well. Is here a special trade thing you can do or would you actually need to register as a business and get trade plates?
You need trade insurance and trade plates. The trade insurance covers you and your customers on a companies test drives usually. The trade plates cover the tax
@@jasonrobinson_ I got mine eventually from Clegg Gifford and it is provided by Tradex. It is expensive but obviously an absolute necessity. I can't say I would recommend them but it was a case of needs must and they were affordable
@CarDealerMagazine thanks for response. Say if I wanted to trade 1 car at a time or 1 car a month, would it be worth doing that or I could just get away with insuring and taxing normally and try add that into my margin of what you would lose, like thr cancellation fees for insurance once I've sold the car.
@@jasonrobinson_ you can’t do it that way as the insurance companies would quickly get wind of it and cancel your insurance. You really need trade insurance from the start I’m afraid. It’s expensive but worth doing. Especially if you want to do test drives
James, I'm wondering if you've considered the impact this business commands on your existing staff at the magazine, redirecting your time, focus, energy and mental bandwidth? Also, be careful with revealing personal details on the vids - I'm referring to the screenshot of a message showing a guy's full name (Josef ...).
It’s incredibly demanding but also complimentary. This video is of course on the Car Dealer Magazine channel and not the CCC one. So all the while it gives us this insight into the trade and a deeper understanding of what our readers go through I think it is worth the time and effort. And also thank you noted on the personal details.
Only 0:17 seconds in and already seeing the content we love. Your technique is improving.
