really enjoying the videos, james, i think you've got a nice little business going there, keeping the overheads lower by trading from home is a great idea! keep up the good work!
Great video and really value the honest insights into the struggles as well as the triumphs. People can hopefully begin to appreciate how much work goes in to doing the job properly and also see that you are a genuine guy earning a honest living and not the stereotype that is so commonly associated to this industry 👍🏻
Such honesty. Thanks for sharing, especially the GDP part. I'll be checking mine now before selling it. Keep up the great work and we love the content.
Your videos are getting better and better, hopefully there are more to come. Very interesting watching you juggle everything. I suppose the moral of the GDPR thing is, the more you do for someone, the less they think of you. Keep going James!
You are far ahead of us than America. Here, you see a used car and it is the law that they post "As Is, No Implied Warranty." Of course if there is a remainder of the factory warranty you get that. Some new car dealers have a 30 day warranty but that is only on their newest and lowest mile cars. It is truly a 50-50 shot that you will be okay or you will be SCREWED! For me better to buy from a private party than a car dealer.
A well put together video. Great insight too so I’ll subscribe. I recently tried to sell my mini but many dealers here didn’t want it as they tend to hang around a lot. Never had that before with a car. Maybe a sign of the times
Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed it. On the Mini front I had a bad experience with a Countryman so have been put off those but the Cooper hatch I sold went quickly. Thanks for the sub
What a fantastic video, I'm just getting into the car trade and you have really helped me out with lots of really good advice, especially the data protection stuff, service/repair bills etc I will make sure I cover up the name and address of the former keepers. Keep up the good work and the WhatsApp group for trading cars is a good shout as well, will be in touch in the next few weeks 👍
Hi James Like the space you have the garage especially.. I've been a bit silly and bought 2 new cars in the last month and a bit both vehicles had tow bars.. My hobby is courier and own transit van and I originally started with a 58 plate estate Vectra great high mileage car but had four years of enjoyable driving pretty much everywhere.. My 09 plate Vectra hasn't lasted the distance as yet.. and I paid £1200. My next purchase was a 3.0 Range Rover Vogue SE lovely colour and interior I used it for a pet delivery Wales to Mileford on sea (Southampton)..£2700 Not bad for 55 plate with two tone leather. Love watching car videos and a new extension to my hobby is collecting cars using a car trailer.. I love Vauxhall Astra convertibles Cascada too. Work in progress.. Great video
Hi James, some of the other traders recently had a group chat. One of them said he’d come off auto trader completely and over 9 years saved £970,000 in fees and was mostly on eBay now selling cars. Behar no drop off in sales from day one.
Fantastic work James, really helpful info for people like myself new to car trade. I would love to be on the Whatspp group you’ve set up. Looking forward to the next video. Ps Autoglym products are the best. The transformation, I love it.
Collecting any new cars yourself is probably the biggest time that could be repurposed at the moment. The prep garage is walking distance away so that's not eating much of it. Does your waitrose deliver then you wouldn't need to pop in at crucial times for handover goodies? Or maybe buy less perishable items so you can have 2 or 3 lots in at once rather than go out for each one individually? I think the needing to be in multiple places at once is the stress causer so if you jiggle things more to only need to be in one place at a time it might not feel so hectic. Also creating a more regular routine so you collect or drop off to the garage only within certain hours, wash cars at certain hours and do viewings at certain hours so it's a bit more structured might help. It gives you more time to decide whether to limit the cars you sell or jump into employing someone so you can sell more. Perhaps having a mobile valeter keep the cars clean might be one way to save time without the proper commitment of employing someone else?
Ps, thank you for sharing the GDPR story. Whilst I know about GDPR I didn't realise I could share the information in certain circumstances. I've bought a blanking out roller from ebay to cover people's personal information.
I throughly enjoy watching these videos it gives a great insight into the industry. It’s clear to see Clever Car Collection is doing well but almost seems as if it is becoming too successful for its (or your) own good. I’ve sure you’ve considered all options but taking someone on or perhaps scaling back to fewer cars a week could take some stress out but keep the good bits? tough call
It’s a tough balancing act. I’ve had nine cars in stock which I think is just too many. If they’ve been bought right and have the right metrics they are popular and that makes you busy. It’s a tough balance. I’d like to find a site and get staff but really not sure. It’s hard finding a location!
Another great video, i love them! As the months pass your reviews will show people you're a good & honest dealer.... well thats what ive found. Pete Turnbridge Autos Ltd
talk about hard work lol you running around like meals on wheels van when we used to have them lol it was great watching you even for half an hour lol you sold some good stuff i was wondering if you would be interested in my vw gold r estate 7.5 with digital dash 1 previous owner and kept in tip top condition with only 55k on the clock , i am disabled from a brain heammorrage etc so cant move , i love that golf but its parting ways and you are the first one , A+
If you drop me a WhatsApp via the Clever Car Collection number on the website I’ll take a look. Will need reg, full mileage and details of service history please. Thanks for the offer!
Recently found & subscribed to your channel and thoroughly enjoying seeing your methods of retailing. I wish you all the best. One point....the iX35 is chain driven, so not sure what your seller meant as you said they had had a recent belt change? Hope the holiday was relaxing & good luck as your business proceeds.
Hi James I’ve been putting off getting an autotrader package as I on average only have 4 cars at once however I feel like due to the lack of data I’m buying unpopular cars, once I sell the next car I will be moving to a package to get access to that data
Also I’m trading from home and watching how business is flourishing for you I’d say buying the correct stock with the metrics provided has benefited you massively
re the Golf - I love a red car - I think they look really bright and cheery - but also like the fact that no one else seems to buy them and they are always 'cheap'. Maybe that's why it didn't work out for you on that one?
Have you considered prepping the cars before advertising? I would think it would speed up the handover times and not give customers concerns if work is needed?
That doesn’t really work for me. I’ve tried it. But I find it’s best to advertise as soon as possible and then turn them around afterwards. You don’t know exactly what they want doing either so you could end up spending out on stuff the customer might not want. It’s a fine balance!
@@CarDealerMagazine yes its a tricky one and as you have tried both ways it obviously works best for you this way. I am looking at doing something similar having taken redundancy and find your videos very helpful. My main sticking point is best source of finding the cars as places like motorway need you to be an estate business?
I traded it on to another dealer who had contacted me. I’ve set up a trade to trade WhatsApp group now for likeminded car dealers. Details in the description of the video 😊
Thank you so much! I had posted that question earlier, but after finishing the video, I realized everything was covered. I think it's a great idea to set up this WhatsApp group. Although I don’t have anything to trade at the moment, if I come across something, I'll definitely share it with you all. Thanks again!
Chin up James….you’ve got a good moral compass…there will always be struggles as you get busier, better never stops 👍
Trying!

Either slow things down to a more manageable volume OR up the stakes, get a unit and employ someone to do what you've been doing.
I’ve been thinking that. Will see how the next few weeks go!
