    Thank you so much for this video! My husband bought me this espresso machine two years ago and it has always intimidated me. Pulled it out this morning, used your tips and made the best vanilla latte I have had in a while! Thank you!

    Thank you for this video. I was a barista for about a year in the mid 90s. Worked in a mom-and-pop owned coffee shop in northern California. I got really good at making yummy espresso-based beverages; it's been a long time and I sort of forgot how to do it. I found this machine at a thrift store for $29 (it looks brand new), but I wasn't sure how to use it, so I watched your video. Brought back a lot of memories of those coffee making days. Also made me feel pretty good about the Goodwill purchase. Great informative video, thanks!

      I too just picked up this model at a goodwill for $34.99 in barely used condition. No manual. This video was so helpful! Will try with Illy next. Finding good espresso beans is difficult. That’s why I love when people share tips!

      Glad it was helpful! Ha this machine was so frustrating for 2 months so I thought I'd make a video for other buyers. Also, it helps to run hot water though (pour a shot without any coffee) before making a shot. I started doing that and now I can use more coffee. I'll probably be posting an update video soon. Best of luck!

This is a nice machine to start with and happy belated birthday!!! =D The EC 702 is a little above beginner level, so don't worry if it takes a few times to get the espresso shot just right. The steaming wand however is pretty easy to use for making nice foamy steamed milk. Enjoy!

    With my semi automatic machines at work we start the timer as soon as we start the shot, so I believe that your 17-18sec shots are really a few seconds longer

      Same where I work. the machine starts the timer right when I press the button to pull the shot and for us, a perfect shot is between 18-20, but 16-22 is fine too.

    Thanks for posting, I bought this machine quite a few years back and decided to dig it out for another try. Hard finding specific information on this particular machine. I bought coffee pre-ground from local roaster and also bought that red brick from market. Can't seem to get crema. But now I have some things to try. I want to try the illy and do the pods taste as good? Love the ease of use

    • @savorwithdmurph1113
      @savorwithdmurph1113  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A finer grind could help a lot with crème. The pods are ok taste wise and very easy to use.I definitely prefer the espresso grind. It also helps to run just hot water through before adding coffee. Helps make a better shot.

    The problem I had with my last espresso machine that I sent back was the espresso "puck" coming out of the basket. If the water stays in the basket and is muddy, it's a PAIN to get the coffee out of the basket!
    How well does the puck come out with a knock on the side of the trash can?

    • @savorwithdmurph1113
      @savorwithdmurph1113  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this machine has that issue. I shake it over the trash can and then wash the portafilter in the sink. The puck come out ok if you knock the side of the trashcan but it still needs a rinse. However, if you leave the machine on and remove the puck later it solidifies more than immediately after the shot is poured.

    • @savorwithdmurph1113
      @savorwithdmurph1113  ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically it needs to be very fine for espresso. You may need to adjust a little but do an espresso setting and if it comes out too slow go a little coarser. It also helps to run hot water through the porta filter before adding the espresso.

      Good question. I looked on Delonghi's website and couldn't find one that matched. They do sell one for their other machines, but I didn't want to buy one just to find out it didn't fit the EC 702. It's possible that might fit though.

    How do you clean the inside of this machine to avoid buildup in future shots and milk?

    • @savorwithdmurph1113
      @savorwithdmurph1113  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a descaler delonghi sells that you run through every 200 shots or so. It's also a good idea to remove the metal filter on the machine and disassemble the porta filter to wash. For milk, I run water through the wand and then steam after steaming the milk. Then I detach the wand and wash that. It keeps it pretty clean. Delonghi has a guide that talks about maintenance to keep it running tip top.

    I'm using this machine with the same lavazza espresso, just a single shot. My shots poor much lighter in color and in flavor than im use to. Do you know why this might be? I tried packing in more coffee like you suggested but it still happens.

    • @savorwithdmurph1113
      @savorwithdmurph1113  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The single shots can pour lighter and they run quicker. I haven't really liked the single shots because of this and I pack in the grinds on those. Running hot water through the portafilter before pouring a shot can also help.

    • @myredprobe2675
      @myredprobe2675 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the back flap is so you don’t put the nozzle at the bottom of the steam cup. It doesn’t work correctly then. So just put it aboht halfway if it’s broken off.

    I tried grinding my beans really fine, but the water isn’t permeating it at all now. The water started spewing out the top. Should it be like a powder, or a little more coarse than that? I tried adding heaping scoops and tamping it down, but it seems to make it worse. It pours great with coarser grounds, but it doesn’t look like espresso is supposed to look. Any advice?

    • @savorwithdmurph1113
      @savorwithdmurph1113  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This machine can be a little tricky. Try letting it warm up with the portafilter attached. Run some hot water through it (just a few seconds), and then remove the portafilter and add the grounds. Sometimes warming it up before brewing does the trick. Espresso grind is supposed to be powdery but water shouldn’t be spewing out the top.

    • @frognutz0o
      @frognutz0o 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a pressurized portafilter you cannot go too fine because the machine is fighting the coffee and the filter and it won't work out with most pressurized filters. You will have to start somewhat course and then work you way finer to see what the machine can handle. Once you get the correct grind for that specific bean, most will be around the same setting.

    • @savorwithdmurph1113
      @savorwithdmurph1113  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If no water is coming out when the espresso button is pushed, there is most likely a blockage in the pipes/porta filter or the pump is not working. Try running the machine without the porta filter attached to see if water comes out. If water does come out, the issue is with the porta filter.

    Regarding the Illy, if you’re having to reduce the dose to get it within that 20-30 second sweet spot, you should also adjust your yield down.
    By reducing dose, but not reducing yield (2 fl ounce standard double shot @ 60grams) you are getting a weaker extraction.
    I think it would be better to reduce the yield by the same ratio as the dosage. In the case of your demonstration, you reduced the recommended dose of 2 tbsp ( or roughly 14-16 grams depending on grind size) to 1 & 2/3rds tbsp or 16.7% less. So you would
    Also want to reduce the final yield by 16.7% in order for this method to not diminish extraction.
    Try it. Stop the double shot at 50 ml rather than 60. This should keep it from thinning out in body.
    Dose and yield should be considered proportionate variables, but you always want time to stay within the same window.
    If you can’t get the adjustment on the machine (or grind size) needed to get to the yield and time you desire, reduce or increase the yield that gets you to the time you want.

      @@whimsical2223 thank you! I figured it out. My grinder doesnt work well and I ended up buying the same illy espresso he has and it worked amazing! So i think i just need to grind my beans with a different grinder.

      Yup the grind makes a big difference in how the shot pours. My Cuisinart grinder couldn't get it fine enough for this machine either.

      That's probably because it can be difficult to pour a good espresso shot. I have used espresso machines before and this one took me about 2 months to learn. I address this issue in the video so people can learn quickly.
