South Africans don't usually want to fight hard - they need a reason to be aggressive. A justification. That's why you never play dirty against the Boks. If they start getting upset they will bring hell and 150% effort.
As a Welshman, I really enjoyed listening to this brilliant podcast this evening. I have to say I have huge respect for Steve Borthwick and England. I thought they were by far the best technical and tactical team in the last World Cup, incredible defence and solid set piece. They peaked perfectly for Argentina playing the warm up games heavy legged. I think Borthwick and England were so clever in the semi final and had the perfect game plan against the boks for 70mins , literally giving them nothing to physically hit and box kick contestables right by the touch line which really frustrated them. I simply couldn’t understand the criticism they were getting because they weren’t winning by playing razzle dazzle rugby, come on now they had six months to prepare!! I actually don’t think there that far off the Boks or Ireland. Brilliant pod ! 👌
So what you are saying is...they were playing old springbok rugby that was heavily criticised in England for years.... Especially by Sir Clive... Every time someone gave him a news article or a 🎤

Respect for Youngs, Coles and Pollard for the honesty in dealing with difficult topics. Very good for the game. Great example for youngsters. Accept the victories, accept the defeats, move on with the lessons. Professionals.
Pollard is the only Springbok backline player who doesn't have a question mark next to his name. His track record speaks for itself : 1. RWC 2015 - highest points scorer. 2. RWC 2019 Final : scores 20 points. 3. RWC 2023 Final : scores all 12 points. All of the above, achieved by the age of 29. The man is a Legend.
You don't get selected on track record, boet, you get selected on form and of the three flyhalves in the squad, Pollard has the worst form. He kicks goals but that is all he does. In other words, he is now at the point that Morne Steyn was at when Handre took over and we are watching it happen again. Happy to have him on the bench to finish out the game but we have lost two games this year, and he started both of them. Against Ireland, once Willie le Roux went off we had zero attacking backline; in Argentina, two of our three backline tries came from moves where Lukhanyo stepped in as receiver and the other came from a quick tap at a maul penalty. The referee brought us back for that penalty after we went wide and didn't get the advantage but even then, Lukhanyo was stepped in as first receiver. Add that to the two missed tackles that lead directly to the first two Argentinian tries. But Manie missing that kick cost us the game, right? In the same way as Rassie has 'covered' Manie's kicking problems, he has covered Handre's distribution problems. You will rarely see Handre do anything other than run at the line, try to grubber it through or pass to a distributor who has stepped in alongside him to fulfill that role. The grubber that Jesse scored the final try from in the last game is the ONLY assist that Handre has gotten since he came back into the squad over a year ago. No question marks? Really?
@@Karma-qt4ji : Pollard achieved a lot by the age of 29. He is a Legend. As for Jessie Kriel, how many tries has he scored in his career ? Danie Gerber would run circles around him. And so would the All Blacks of old.
@@Orion3741 LOL that is a fabrication combined with subjective opinion. How many times do you really think Danie Gerber would get past the modern All Black defence? Or any other top tier nation? But since this is not about Jesse, let's crunch some real flyhalf statistics... Looking at kicking stats for SA flyhalves since re-admission (points per game): 1. Naas Botha 11.14 2. Joel Stransky 10.91 3. Morne Steyn 10.91 (a whisker below Joel) 4. Braam van Straaten 10.52 5. Handre Pollard 9.81 Sitting at 5th position and taking an extra 9 games to pass Morne Steyn's record. Using your Kriel v Gerber analogy against you, this does not look that good, does it? Here's a question for you: Down by a single point, a few seconds on the clock and you get a penalty just inside the opposition half, about 5 or 10 metres from the left hand touch. You have Handre Pollard, Elton Jantjies and Frans Steyn on the field, what do you do?
@@Karma-qt4ji : Um, actually Danie Gerber scored 2 tries in the first test against New Zealand, upon re-admission ( 1992 ). The Springbok who scored the most tries against New Zealand was Joost van der Westhuizen : 5. Unlike Faf, Joost actually played running rugby. Another Legend. As for Naas Botha, he is another Legend. The King of drop goals. And then you get Frik du Preez, who could score, convert, and drop. SA's Player of the ( last ) century.
Would be awesome if you guys can get a conversation with one the springbok players from the 2016/17 era. Would love to hear some of their stories about the dressing room and feelings during those big losses and if they thought it would get better and now the difference with Rassie being there
and now throw Tony Brown into the mix....Boks are going to be a different beast with their attacking game over the next few years...slow poison and a backline willing and able to to have crack. Scary thought.

It's weird but this chat kind of makes it feel like 3/4 of a match isn't even played on the field. The mental preparation to and mental awareness/availability during the game is more important than what you're doing on the field, sort of. The mindset preparation before the kick is more important than the kick itself. At this point the Boks have been so open about what they do and how they do it, while somehow still coming up with new tactics and what not, if they actually do win the 2027 WC with the same core squad they'll definitely, without a question, go down as the best team ever.
