The Model T truck Dean and Taylor are in belonged to my Great Uncle. It was known as La Mocha, as it had no roof top.

Giant has always been one of my favorites. Watching today I can't help but see the examples of racial and money conscious bias of which has always plagued our country. Bick having the conservative, class conscious attitude and Leslie with the more liberal, fair-minded, democratic approach. I love how her character quietly lives true to her values and how eventually Bick finally gets it at the end of the movie. Elizabeth played her perfectly and was the soul of the story.

I’m from this generation when the movie was released. I talk to young people today & they never head of Jemmy Dean and the other great stars . I know it’s to be expected. It should be released again . A real master piece to be remembered. P. S. Almost made you want to be a Texan.

I actually saw it in a theater in Philadelphia a few years ago. When Dean's name came on the screen, the audience applauded. So I think it depends on where you are.

Well Warners( what's left of it) may not own the rights to it.

I love that diner fight scene. I know it hurts when he loses but it was about taking a stand, not winning. Otherwise it would dilute the point it was making

    George Stevens is a genius.
Rock's role in Giant was his greatest performance.

I think his performance in Seconds was better.

      @justthink5854 I completely agree! 👍
And I think Giant was one of Tiomkin's best. Right up there with Land of the Pharaohs and The Thing from Another World.

@justthink5854 Yep. BH another one of my all-time favourites. Alfred Newman (also Jewish) my number one pick.

Dean was just magnetic in the jalopy scene soaked in oil. Carefully planned, well understood, and then set ablaze with talent.

This was good because it showed in an honest way something rarely in TX movies. It is not something we are proud of. The attitude that MX people were the lower class, love them for servants and ranch hands and that things needed to be kept that way - I grew up with it. Praise God it’s not that way anymore of course!!!

This movie, GIANT, has long stayed my top-ranked favorite-most memorable & meaningful of all, if not most, of the movies I’ve seen in my 76 years of life - since my mother first took me to see it when I was NINE YEARS OLD, back in 1956.
I must’ve been really READY to see GIANT back then, bc it’s stayed with me as strong, clear & retrievable ever since, for 60+ years …
And “GIANT” is nothing if not a
TIMELESS AMERICAN EPIC of Majesty. It’s a True AMERICAN Story
It was the BEST BOOK I’d ever read (certainly at 10-11y.o., & I did read Edna Ferber’s book GIANT, when I was that young & only AFTER I saw the movie) & I was thankful for it being just as the movie unraveled, just as extraordinary, & seamlessly unfolding.
It’s a story that belongs to every American, regardless of race, class, religion, or part of America they’re from. And there’s a message for all of us … something we can all take away and benefit from.
Every major character in GIANT has some sizable obstacle facing them & they know they’d better learn how to deal with it … and they finally do realize that the people that live right nearby them are there to help - but it’s also ‘Take It or Leave It’ kind of help. You can see them grow towards the need for them to ACCEPT that offered help.
Everybody gets something for their troubles if they’re willing to do the work for change … & you get the sense that their longings will be satisfied by something unexpectedly unforeseen & unexpected.
Every time I see GIANT (& I NEVER pass up seeing it; I must’ve seen it 7-8 times), I am renewed with a belief that every person in this country has a reachable path to improvement in their lives, if not to enrichment, and with sense that, if you need any help or encouragement, it’s right there nearby … & maybe all you have to do is look up, ask & you’ll find someone who knows what you mean & is possibly like you, looking for something too.
GIANT’s WIDE scope covers class, racial & social divides😅 … & showed how even people like Bick Benedict/Rock Hudson can learn to soften/maybe even reverse his hardened prejudices & accept (thru the mindful coaxing of his wife Leslie’s (Elizabeth Taylor) examples, e.g. when she reminds Bick that their young son Jordy (Jordan Benedict Jr.) may not FEEL like HE (young Jordy) wants that pony his father just gave him for his 4th birthday, Bick saying: “oh I was riding horses before I could walk” & Leslie responds by saying: “Well that was YOU; he’s a different person …”
… and young Jordy continues crying his eyes out as Rock/Bick grabs him & takes him to the pony (in front of all the birthday party guests) and pulls him onto the saddle in front of him & takes the little kid for a quick 1/4 mile mighty GALLOP in front of all the party guests, & the kid’s blubbering all the way …
… when all he wants to do is get back onto the porch & play with his toy doctor’s stuff … a stethoscope, a doctor’s bag, etc. which at least he fortunately DOES get to do
…. the film filled my mind, heart & soul with appreciation for all the torments that most/if not all the main characters were going through … trying to be seen, heard, accepted, loved, talented, having important things to contribute in their lives.
GIANT remains a film that envelops the most central themes in most peoples’ lives … growing up, maturing into people who are encouraged & helped to learn how to make the choices that’ll bring them fulfillment in their lives …
It’s such a FINE story … how it begins w Bick & Leslie having NO IDEA that (or how) their paths will join & that they’ll become the advocates for independence that they end of being …
What’s extraordinary too is some of the “back story” that’s behind GIANT- how director George Stevens had already selected Rock H for Bick Benedict but not the role for Leslie …
But George S. had been thinking of Audrey Hepburn & Grace Kelly (and later on mentioned Elizabeth Taylor) & he mentioned all this to Rock before the full casting happened … & Rock chose Elizabeth because Rock knew that she was cool with/ accepting of gay men … she was known to be good buddies with Monty Clift and of course Rock H. was a gay man -> tho not til he developed AIDS in 1983-84; he died in 1985 & Elizabeth went to Paris where he was very originally hospitalized before Pres Ronald Reagan even SPOKE the word “AIDS” (& GIANT didn’t come out til 1955-56 )when he was still very closeted) … but Elizabeth was well aware that Rock was gay & that was truly OK with her …
Elizabeth Taylor was an amazingly compassionate open-hearted kind & accepting person - which is I believe what in large part made her such an outstanding actor. SHE UNDERSTOOD PEOPLE TO THEIR DEPTHS & was never fearful of finding out what those depths were.
When you next watch a movie of hers, keep the in mind.
      ENJOY SEEING “GIANT”- 4,5 times!!

I forgot; Elizabeth Taylor ages years in this movie. James Dean is very dramatic. Is the House in Marfa still standing?

She was only 23. So I agree the aging was done pretty well.

The house never really existed, it was a prop built for the set. All the interior scenes were filmed on a sound stage in Burbank, CA. So, no, it rotted away a few decades later.
