If u buy any bagged dirt. Be careful because most of it now is just wood substrate. When i was younger, dirt was dirt but now its wood. Every bagged dirt that ive purchased was wood chips.

Good timing, great heads! My cabbage was a bust last year. I started my seedlings too late and we had a bad winter, so they languished and failed. I think I’ll start some brassicas this weekend 🤔

Early Jersey Wakefield - yes #1 choice to grow. Bt= the only way to have cabbage family crops thrive. Also use Bt on corn silks to prevent corn worms.

i grew cabbages here in uk last year for first time. had no idea what i was doing.. they grew huge but never really made a head worth harvesting. figured i wouldnt bother again.. but this has inspired me to give them another go

I've never grown cabbage before. I never really like cabbage much, and I've always had trouble with groundhogs and my brassicas. Plus they are such a space hog. But my garden keeps expanding, my fence is somewhat more secure, and I've gotten into saurkraut this year, so I'm trying to grow some fall cabbages. I loved to see all of the different varieties you have.

Because of you and Tuck I tried cabbage again this year. I grew the Early Jersey Wakefield. I'm in central coastal Jersey so I figured if you were so successful I could be too. I was! Huge, tight heads! Thank you both so much! I also put in my first apple trees, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. You are so inspiring. I keep saying James is probably close, same style house, similar yard as me. If he can do it so can I. Finally ❤❤❤s for Tuck!
I found an excellent way to save cabbage is make eggrolls with them and freeze them. They are wonderful!

Thank you for the tips on cabbage! This is my first season growing and I’m about to pull everything out to feed to my chickens, goats and family. I built a bed just for cabbage and broccoli in the spring. Except for the pest, it’s been great. I’m growing again for the autumn garden (less pests hopefully) because both brassicas are cold hardy.
I am ready to cry. I worked so hard just to have the heat. bugs destroy my garden. All your advice has been helpful.
Sorry you had a rough year, me and Tuck wish we could give you a hug but don't quit and let the bugs win. Stick with it and you will get big harvests in the future, next year you will know what bugs are coming and how to prevent them and how to manage them if they do get into your garden.It's worth it in the end 🐕❤️

My growing zone is little different than yours but your energy is refreshing. I’ve watched many of your videos and you make me wanna grow something here in hot desert rocks. Yap. Been here in Las Vegas rock mountain for a year now. Oh and then they put decorative red granite rocks to cover the ugly white rocks. Currently making my own compost for the first time and it’s on and off. Sometimes it smells woody and other times it smells like poop. Too much water I believe. But I’m learning how to mend it. I probably have to build a garden bed on top of granite gravel. If you have any tips I would love your comments. Thanks

I'm excited to see this. Sometimes I don't plant cabbages because I hate picking off the cabbage butterly larvae and looking for their eggs daily. I try to use as little organic natural sprays as much as possible. But some years it turns into a full time job taking them off!

Question: Are the outer leave used for eating or are they best just going to the compost? 💗💗💗💗💗💗for Tuck!
The leaves of all brassica plants are good for eating, and the outer leaves of cabbage have the most nutrition, so they should never be thrown away. You can eat the leaves of cauliflower, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts, as well as the leaves of horseradish.

My cabbages were decimated this year by cabbage worms. These tips on her are great thank you. Any suggestions on protecting plants in triple-digit temperatures every day? It is supposed to be 112 for the next 4 days. I have shade clothes over all the beds, and I make they are well watered.
I use the Happy Frog organic potting soil for starting my vegetables, fruit and flowers.

James, many varieties of cabbage are “good keepers”. Have you ever considered picking a nice shady spot to dig a small root cellar for keeping your apples, root vegetables, cabbage and others? Then you could keep eating healthy from your yard into the winter.

I have yet to try it, but I have heard that spraying your plants with compost tea/extract is basically like putting BT on plants. That's tea/extract from compost that was kept aerobic most of the time, i.e. hot compost or compost from a bioreactor.
It is summer here all day every day.

❓❓ Hi James! I'm wondering if cabbages would still be tasty if they were harvested much smaller than yours. I would love to grow them as impressive as yours (even if just for bragging rights! 😄). But I just don't have the room. So about what diameter should I grow them to, to achieve a good flavor/size balance in a tiny garden? Thanks for all your information and advice. Even if I didn't have a little garden, I'd still watch, because your food forest is just so awesome! 🥬
Yeah, they won’t have as many nutrients in them if they aren’t allowed to fully develop, and they might not be quite as crunchy, but they are still tasty and edible. It’s still better to pick early rather than late.
I would recommend just growing smaller varieties. Not all varieties are this large.
