@@markgellert1 old = jaded in many cases, unfortunately. I've encountered plenty on United and American who exhibited a "What do you want now?" attitude.
U.S. carriers are not “choosing” the most experienced cabin crew for routes, instead flight attendants at U.S carriers bid for their schedules every month. They submit their bids of trips they desire, and days off they want, the system then runs everyone’s bids by seniority. In other words, the longer you’ve been with the company, the more chances you get what you want. Sometimes these senior flight attendants will drop their trips and junior flight attendants can pick it up. But everything is by seniority at US carriers. Typically the longer the route, the more desirable the destination, the more senior it will be.
Crew at American get to bid on what trips they want, and the more senior you are, you get priority to be given the trip. There will be a few times only young crew work, especially around the holidays.
and summer.....because the more senior crews can hold the coveted months of Jun-Aug off, this gives less senior crew members a chance to fly select routes.
I'm soon to be flying AA LHR-PHL, and returning JFK-LHR - your review has dispelled some of my worries! Given that my ticket includes UK domestic flights and two US domestic flights, and cost €650, I wasn't expecting much!
Great video! Regarding your comment on crew’s age, they’re old because they are unionized and get schedule preferences on long-haul international flights.
I flew them twice in 2022 and again this past September, both times to Madrid, from Philadelphia. Much of the hate they get is from passengers who got delayed and missed connections, which I understand, but there will be similar hate for any airline in such circumstances. 6/10 is what I would give them too. I also flew their premium economy class, which was quite affordable in 2022. PE on AA is honestly great, worth the money if it is only 20% over main cabin fare, more than that and I wouldn't pay it.
I'm going to make a minor ad note for you. The older flight attendants are able to hold that route in the trip bidding process. Selecting your trips as a crew member is a monthly bid, USA crews are not rostered, they select their routes, and the awards are based on seniority.
I was actually a lot happier with AA than I was with united. Both were cross country flights. United was a 737 max 9 and AA was an Airbus 321. AA I got an alcoholic drink for free as where united you don't. Sitting in comfort plus. Overall better flight crew and AA the pilot the landing was super smooth. Now next month will be my first experience with Delta.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I thought I will return flight by JAL but I misunderstood. I feel so anxious but this helps me consider my AA flights.
My kids flew American economy 2 weeks ago and said they were treated very badly. They are flying World traveler seats on the way back so we will see the difference
BTW, the average age of AA fleet is the youngers among all 3 major US carriers. AA and United have been struggling with improving the in-flight services or customer service in general. Both tried to offer retirement to older (less friendly) employees who learned to do the bare minimum. Changing the overall culture is difficult and takes time. They have succeeded to a certain degree to ensure long-haul flights and popular flights get staff by 'better' employees. However, it is still a far cry from other airlines where the FA would go and clean the restroom on a regular basis, hence the nasty restroom in all AA flights. AA is also eliminating their International First Class product by the end of 2024, I guess that's a way to deal with un-satisfactory in-flight services for premium travelers and reduce the amount of complains. I personally avoid AA and United, I would rather pay more for better service than put up with poor customer services especially when I am paying several thousands or more for the seat.
I liked going continental Airlines out of Gatwick and Heathrow before United Airlines took it over I'm going with American Airlines in July 2025 to Chicago in business class I do want good service no turbulence

American airlines (all of the big three not just AA explicitly) are "decent". They do not compete on service. They compete on non stop route and schedule. Non US carriers will always tend to have better service because that's how they compete. US carriers tend to just have a better route structure (from an American travelers perspective). In general i choose them last if the timing of the flights is equal. But they often offer the best non stop or one stop routes with the lowest layover times when flying into the US.
