Three months? Come on, no way! I had an anterior hip replacement and was in our pool 15 days after the operation when the incisions were completely closed. Gentle walking in enough water to make me buoyant with knee tucks and leg kicks really helped with my recovery. No breast stroke kicks though simply because it felt wrong. I'm 12 months on now and have exercised almost every day in the pool. I don't even think about the replacement.

Walking in the pool isn’t exactly swimming. Our patients do hydrotherapy as soon as the wound has healed. Three months before doing swimming strokes is pretty routine after hip replacement regardless of approach.

I wondered about getting into our pool too? I had a hip revision barely 5 wks ago. I would have to climb up a ladder as it’s an above ground pool. Yesterday, I practiced going up the ladder ‘once’, with my hubby behind me. I used the strength in my arms to help and did the one good leg, then brought up the surgical leg to meet it, repeating it. I was honestly scared because the healing with this revision has been much more painful and slow compared to the first hip replacement. Btw, the first was only in March. I’m 58 and it was bone on bone osteoarthritis. I had 2 dislocations after 7 great wks of healing because the ball/joint were at the wrong angle (admitted my surgeon), he dislocations only 4 days apart, the first causing me a fall that gave me a compression fracture of the spine, the second only 4 days later.I had a revision May 21st. I want to walk around in the pool as I did for my knee replacement etc so, I’m not sure if I should/shouldn’t? I’ll ask my surgeon this Tuesday when I see him? As much as I love the pool, I don’t want to cause myself any grief after everything I’ve already been through in such a short time!

I did ask my surgeon if I could go in our pool. He said my scar looks great, totally closed up. He said if my husbands behind me on the ladder and I’m strong enough to climb in safely, to go for it and excersise gently, gauging how I feel the following day, so that I know if I can do more or if I went too far. Pain is my guide so, the next blast of nice weather we get, I’m going in!!!!!!

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I have just had TLHR ( 8 wks ago) and miss swimming so much. 😢My physio has told me I can now resume swimming again - with obvious precautions, plus walking in the water. Before my surgery I did a lot of back stroke as I struggled with breast stroke so much. I also bought a float which I used to do front facing kicking. Do you think I could start to do this as well now ?

If you are walking without any aids and you feel confident, then it should be fine. Take it slowly and if it hurts, stop! Hope it goes well.

I swam 3 weeks after and I’m doing great! Breaststroke kick is iffy🤔

Excellent! I’m a bit wary of breaststroke until about 3 months postop.
