Did you feel long after surgery? Did it feel normal after some time?

Hi Adam, I had my left hip replacement for osteoarthritisback in 2017 when I was 53. I recovered really well without any leg length discrepancy. I was aware my right hip would need to be replaced in time and I had my right hip replacement on October 1Oth. My surgeon said my right leg is now 4mm longer than my left but he says this is negligible. It feels very real to me right now. I know I might still limp for a while post surgery but when I do my exercises, my right foot drags along the floor and I am so worried about it going forward. I would be so grateful for your help.

I had THR on my right hip in June ‘23. My femur broke twice, hip dislocated twice, got a serious infection, spent 3 months in hospital and went through six revision surgeries! Definitely not my surgeon’s fault, he’s one of the best in the city and he had never seen this in his 25 year career. This is my body having soft bones and not responding well to anything foreign. For example, I had an implant (Hyprocure for hyper pronation) in my foot that kept moving out of position and after four surgical attempts we finally admitted defeat and removed it. Again, top surgeon and I was the only patient he had that this happened to. Back to my hip, my right leg is definitely shorter and if I don’t use my cane I walk with a lurch. A shoe lift doesn’t work for me because I only wear shoes when absolutely necessary and almost always sandals. It’s been quite an experience, one I could have done without.

Grateful that I recently found you. I had left hip replacement a couple months ago and right hip replacement scheduled. I definitely can feel the difference in leg length and also have lumbar issues. My right sacroiliac joint is now angry and demanding its share of attention. My surgeon assured me that after next surgery, legs will be equal. I’m looking forward to lumbar spine and SI joint, which is literally being out of joint, getting over being irritated. I actually feel fortunate that both hips have osteoarthritis - can’t wait to regain some of my lost height!

Sorry you're wrong about the leg needing a hip replacement will be shorter. My right leg was 1 1/4 inches longer to begin with and that's probably why my femur head was really pushing into the acetabulum and causing it to protrude further than it should have. So now I am really lopsided and even though Dr says it will get better, I really doubt it 😢😢😢😢

@@rosaliemoser697 I’m so sorry you’re going through this. My surgery leg is A LOT longer know and
PT is a joke since they do nothing to help your gait. They literally tell you if your pelvis is off it’s okay… what bs.

Same here. My keg is A LOT longer! I’m pretty annoyed about it and I feel this is something we should be told before surgery. Has yours improved?

@@GoToGal70 Well Im at 7 1/2 weeks now , and its still longer but seems like its a littlebetter . I dont know if it will ever be normal again,I still have some hip pain , and for sure groin pain . My surgeon was not real up front about this surgery .

@ I’m going to see someone to see if my pelvis is even since western medicine doesn’t seem to care about that. I was literally told it doesn’t matter. I’m also looking into a shoe lift sized to what I need to get both legs the same length. If this isn’t corrected it will lead to destroying the other good hip which then will need a hip replacement too. It’s like it’s set up to get you back in for more money. They know how important your structure being aligned is and yet they lie saying it’s not important. I’m fortunate to have a caring team outside of western medicine to help me. I wish the best for you and hope you find the good help. I would start looking for a good chiropractor in your area and perhaps someone who works with fascia to help out. But definitely get a shoe lift so you don’t have to limp and mess up your good hip.

@@crystalcoleman8668 I’m so sorry. All of that pain especially the groin pain should have been relieved from the surgery. I would seek help from a good chiropractor who takes x-rays to see exactly what’s going on. Your pelvis may be out of alignment. If you don’t get it corrected it will lead to you destroying the other good hip and you’ll be back in within the year for another hip replacement…. I have talked to quite a few people who had this issue and within 6 months to a year they had to have another hip replacement. 😟 Western medicine acts like your structure is not important…. it’s sooooo important. And PT told me they do nothing to make sure your gait is correct. What a racket!

Hi Adam. I had a hip dislocation and my right leg 20 mm shorten than left from my first day, and currently I have a osteoarthritis and planning hip replacement. Is it possible to fix that length difference? Thank you.

Talk to your surgeon, usually the leg can be lengthened at the time of surgery.
