I agree with you, “We Need New Names” was great. I’d also recommend “Small Country” by Gaël Faye.

Oh this is nice thanks for the recommendations.. As a zambian booktuber I'm super excited to see The old drift on this list 🥳. Looking a book from Congo so might just pick up the one on your list. Lovely video

Thank you for this list. I haven’t read these specific books, but you make them sound very interesting. One of my favourite reads this year is an African novel: Murambi, The Book of Bones, by Senegalese author Boubacar Boris Diop (about the genocide in Rwanda). A famous novel from North Africa is The Yacoubian Building, by Egyptian author Alaa Al Aswany (I have not read it yet).

I love African fiction as well, I made a video as well a while ago recommending some of my favourites. I absolutely loved the Tsitsi Dangarembga and I am interested in house of stone. For North Africa, I would recommend Nawal El-Sawadi from Egypt, she has a lot of feminist non fiction, but I think she has also written some novels.

I love So long a Letter by Mariama Ba, We need New Names by Noviolet Bulawayo, The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives by Rotimi Babatunde. From Egypt you can read the novels of Naguib Mafouz.

Hi 👋🏾 stumbled upon this randomly. I have a recommendation for you: OF DEMONS & MEN by C.E. OCHEJA. He's also a Nigerian. You might want to ignore the aforementioned book because it isn't very popular and all that, but, I promise that will be most unfortunate. I love that story. 👍🏿
