Frankly, I had completely forgotten just how good Gentle Giant was. I remember listening to them in high school, some 50 years ago.

The Missing Piece is greatly under esteemed.
It may not be their best, but it is still main sequence classic Gentle Giant. I saw the tour(which helped, they were so great live), and they opened with Two Weeks In Spain, which is also the first song on the album. I wasn’t even quite sure I liked the song yet at that time, but they played it so precisely I couldn’t resist it’s charms in concert. The middle eight was a thing of beauty.
As much fun as all this was, they were even better opening for Rennaissance 6 months before.

Saw this live. Second half of the show, Missing Piece tour.
The two song combination of I’ll Bet You Thought We Couldn’t Do it and this song, For Nobody, was possibly the loudest set of sounds I ever heard in my life.
Further, Kerry Minnear and Ray Shulman were forces of nature as musicians and composers. Minnear may have been the best keyboard player I ever witnessed. Yet he might have been even stronger on those vibes solos he played on Funny Ways.
I saw Gentle Giant twice in about 6 or so months in 1976, ‘77, both unforgettable experiences. ❤❤

the original mix always sounded thin and tinny, like the sounds was being sent through a narrow muzzle. Steven Wilson's mix did the song and album justice: rich and colorful mix that sounds like it's coming out of a cannon.

It should be. When the Beatles were using 4 track to record, Zappa was using 16 track. The equipment back in the '70s weren't where we are today. It's the same music. Only difference is the equipment. Just think what we'll have in 20 years. And how about AI generated new GG music. As GG says, "Just the Same?"
I'm extremely opposed to the idea of AI music. That's like taking a drug; there is no work or soul behind it, just pure dopamine. Music is so valuable in part because of the human experience jt draws from.
AI music is like the porn of musical satisfaction. No work and all instant reward.
I sound extreme in my opinion right now, but give it 20 years and we'll have some very strong arguments in this area of study.

The last masterpiece song written by GG
Another great mix. Really letting that bass tone shine. I do kinda wish he'd left a little bit of the phaser in during the final harmonies though. Just felt like the phaser gave a cool build up to the end. Overall this is still gonna be my definitive edition though.

Again, I say The Missing Piece has weathered Time’s Test well. The album is often unfairly maligned. May not be their best but it is great!

I have tried to, but I just can't seem to like them.
I found them difficult at first, but then I discovered Three Friends and after that their other albums started to grow on me.👍
😮 think it’s similar to some food… some really dig what other ones hate - or with the words of Rupert Hine „One man's nightmare is another man's dream… One man's poison is another man's cake“

By the way: to me it Octopus 🐙 did that job…that album fully astounded me
