- In our eighth list review for the 2024 AFL season, we go over some basic projected statistical changes going into 2025, after the updates to the Essendon list during the off season.
The Bombers lost former stars; Jake Stringer and Dyson Heppell, but they did manage to pick up draftees Isaac Kako, Angus Clark, Archer Day-Wicks and Jaxon Prior among others in their post-season trade & draft periods, and we go over all of the changes and what they might bring.
I hope you enjoy our assessment of the Essendon Bombers and their list.

Another banger video. Cant wait to see the freo analysis next, gonna be an interesting disect
Not long now, will be done by next weekend
BL:
I think Martin will play more mid/wing /fwrd. SAAD will get heaps of game time. Sheil will also play back from the start. His preseason has been very solid
ML:
Settlefield will be back up at best. Tsatas is killing it so will play mid.
FL:
Wright won't start. Draper/Bryan will both play btwn resting fwrd/ruck. They are jelling well by all reports.
Very nice video. I love the presentation and ill look forward to watching videos during the season as I think the statistical analysis will be good in season as the stats start coming through.
As an Essendon fan when looking at training reports and having been to watch training I think there will be quite a few departures from the predictions from this video, which makes sense as you are only looking at the past years numbers and that cant factor in development or a change in direction.
I think the round 0 team will line up something like this:
Backs:
McGrath McKay Ridley
Redman Reid Shiel
Mids:
Duursma Caldwell Roberts
Draper Merrett Durham
Forwards:
Perkins Langford Martin
Kako Caddy Gresham
Bench:
Jones Bryan Prior Tsatas (El-Hawli)
The most notable change is I think we will go with Draper/Bryan combo in the ruck with Draper pushing forward. This will force Wright out of the team.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah exactly, can only do so much prediction when players change roles and teams change tactics but I think it gives a reasonable idea on areas of improvement.
I like some of the changes you've made, particularly the Bryan choice, I um'd and ahh'd over that for quite a while but it would be surprising to see Parish miss to Prior or Tsatas, I suppose his body hasn't been the best for the last couple of years but yeah not what I expected.
@WoodenSpoonData I just don't think Parish will be fit for round 0. He will be best 22 probably pushes Roberts to the sub role. But Tsatas will 100% be playing and I think he will get big midfield minutes
As a long suffering bombers supporter I just hope we are top 2 before our inevitable mid season fade-out…
Great video honestly I rate your assessment I don’t think they’re harsh enough on themselves and they take it to lightly and it shows more then not i feel like well, they improved greatly from last year, though I just didn’t have the legs to keep up with the rest of the competition they run out due to injury and inconsistency.
Cox and Wright in the 2's.😊
Nice vid :)
Good video, I think Essendon struggle a lot this year though and it's funny that the top player metrics weigh up to the defence when they had a bottom 5 defence in the league. Honestly they have good rebounders which is where most the stats are coming but their wingers struggled due to injury and youth so it was just coming back with interest.
I think the best chance Essendon have with success is being a hyper aggresive forward half team, they naturally won out i50 differential with their strong inside midfield and it could back up this year and prevent the ball going back to much. Lack of Stringer hurts but they need more consistancy than his type of play and if they can get Wright taking more marks inside it at least takes a bit of pressure of the young crumbers and prevent the ball rebounding out as easily as it did in 2024.
@@psyrick-o6f Yeah I’d say you’re bang on the money.
Yeah the defensive stats have a bit of a problem in my system (and AFL stats in general.)
I find pretty very few stats are defensively based, most stats are based on moving the ball forward or gaining possession, some of that can be helpful defensively but much of it is based on just getting it out of there.
@@WoodenSpoonData Honestly it's an AFL problem, you see it with All Australian rankings and the Fox analysis shows where they froth at the mouth at intercept marks and defensive 1vs1 contests but don't really care if a players ball use is forcing the ball to come back inside 50 exposing them again of turnover or if a team structure allows other players to be more exposed/targeted for the breakaway contests. Apply the same things to Wingers as well who provide hard to metric ball movement stats but have to be rated against those seagulls in the inside midfield.
Still list breakdowns like this can reveal some of those things, like if you rate fairly well and still are struggling it's more likely a structural thing (opposite is true as well) and I'd much rather an overview like this with some sort of metrics and reasoning than a gut feel on whether Zach Merrett has enough Essendon Edge (tm) and if Ben McKay wants a premiership hard enough. Always appreciate when someone has a look at the limited stats we get as fans and I love looking at Wheelo's too when I do my team previews.
Why put wiederman in if he played 1 game, someone must of played more games in the position than him?
Good work mate.No matter your list, first thing a team needs to bring is intent.Bombers haven't shown sustained effort for years. No sustained improvement either. If Scott cant get hunger into the lads,6 games should show us,he gotta go.
If Reid’s healthy he plays. Ridley is not a traditional key defender.
Considering from all accounts or from what we’ve heard it could be BS well have to wait and see they’re going to play the kids doesn’t mean they’re not gonna try and win, but it means they’re focusing on the future, draft picks and building depth to challenge by the time Tassie comes in so I’m hoping not, but it’s looking like a bottom 4 finish.
Will have 5-6 guys under 20 games round 1. Think they will be happy to go backwards to go forward.
Huge draft hand next year also
@@travispoorter8654 yeah I think it might be best tbh, not a bad floor to build from
Ruck is 💩 what they need to do in the next few off seasons is draft balanced, but defenders first they’ve focused on forwards the last 2 drafts need to focus on defenders and ruckman the next couple midfield is ok has depth already so that’s alright just keep the players they have and develop them or trade picks from 2027 onwards for someone better.
Reid was this but hasn't got his body right :(
@ has what? He’s a defender? He might come good back injury are a pain in the as I’ve had one it sucked.
@@FluffyKing43 I just want milk that tastes like real milk :(
@@peterzhou2567 I want a decent fkn ruck
Honestly love my dons but the next few years are going to be a rebuild so we can’t expect to do much. We’re already stacking the injury list but so are a few other teams so it’s a 50/50. We should just be looking forward to the kids getting a proper crack at it. It’ll take a few years as hard as it’s already been. If I’m wrong I’m a happy man if I’m right I’ll be happy(depending on how we go in the draft) :)
Yeah I'm leaning towards agreeing with you, particularly with some of your pre-season injuries, and as a Saints fan I've been playing the long game for a while, so all I can say is, I hope you do better than we have
@@WoodenSpoonData mateee you poor bloke sorry to hear about all the bad injury news for your guys man that sucks to hear
port would be interesting
@@laurencejoyner4668 Port will be in the review of ‘24 Top 8 teams ✔️
Wow....talk about data..
You're going to overlook important organic factors if your analysis is too "statcentric".
Nick Bryan will be better than Draper. Draper is a X factor ruckman. Not a top tier ruckman.
Bombers will jump up this year and surprise a lot of people. As well as Adelaide.
hope bulldogs soon?
