- The Detroit Pistons, once a respected Franchise known for success within the NBA owning 3 Championships and beating some of the best players of All-Time to get them, and at one point going to 6 straight conference Finals appearances in the 2000s decade. The Current State of Detroit Basketball is nowhere near that and it has been like that for a LONG TIME. And as the Detroit Pistons start the NBA Season 2-25 and about to break the longest losing streak in NBA History. The Entire NBA Community is now taking notice that the Detroit Pistons have been on a consistent downward spiral ever since the remnants of the 2000 Pistons championship squad all got older and left for greener pastures. Since the 2008-09 season the Pistons have only been to the playoffs twice and won 0 games in those two series, have produced 2 All Stars, went through 7 Head Coaches, and the best record they could produce from this 15 year period, was a 41-41 season. In this video we will go over every misstep the Detroit Pistons have made since their Championship Days and see just how they tried to fix it, while failing at EVERY, STEP, OF, THE, WAY! Whether that is relying on a older Allen Iverson, Paying Josh Smith to save the Franchise, doing the same years later with Blake Griffin, or the many draft mistakes they've made.

@@billblaski9523yes and no they couldn’t shoot from outside of the paint so the spacing on the floor sucked plus the shooters around them couldn’t make any shots
@@billblaski9523no. Monroe was a traditional center and Drummond wasn't good for anything but rebounds, plus Josh Smith would be a modern day pf. They were playing big while the league was starting to play small ball because of the warriors. They wouldve been solid in the early 2000s but they were outdated.

That's crazy now that i think about, that trade of Billups-Iverson was really the catalyst for the Pistons downfall. Ever since the trade, the Pistons have never regained there elite status

The Jennings for Knight and Middleton trade really goes to show how long it takes to build a championship team that's gonna compete for a while
It’s still nutty to me they made that trade when Jennings is a black hole on offense and Knight showed no reason to be traded at all.
My very first game I saw live when I moved to this country was pistons vs Utah Jazz just before stockton and malone parted ways and malone went to LA. I'll never forget that game 7 against San antonio the pistons really could of had multiple chips. Such a legendary run the pistons had.
been waiting for this one. it's incredible how the same organization that built a power house in the eastern conference in the early 2000s that won a championship, made two finals and pretty much made at least the conference finals all those years, that same organization has been this horrendous for the past 15 years. how does that even happen lol

The Austin Daye draft was a bad spot. One note, I totally forgot about Kuester as a coach. The reason he benched those 7 players wasn't because they were late. It's because they were intentionally missing shootaround as a protest against him as coach. The shocking thing is it was the veterans on the team who organized it. you'd think it would be the young guys. But guys like Rip and Tayshaun doing it was definitely not a good look for anyone.
WOWWWWWWW the crazy thing is I remember when that game happened when I was a kid and was very confused. When i originally looked it up what I said in the video was what I found online. Wish it gave me the full explanation but obviously the internet journalism isnt as good as it is today. Thanks for that, makes things that much funnier.
@@Alvini_Linguine No worries. Still a great video. And it's one nitpick in a overall well researched video. I remember Austin Daye on the bench looking angry wishing he didnt miss shoot around because only 6 players played and he knew he could have gotten some big minutes if he played.
Never forget them laughing him on the bench with T-Mac, too. That dude must have been one bad coach to have vets openly laughing at him like that.

I often hear people say "this poorly managed team drafted yet another bust"... How much is on the draft choice and how much is it poorly managed teams failing to develop young talent, putting them in toxic environments etc.? Curious what you think...
It's more on the management for sure. Obviously in some cases you have bad mixes of talent and execution of said talent. Or even personality issues. But it's mainly on the organization to maximize the talent and obviously with the Pistons never tanking, the probability of that talent growing the way they want will be minimal. (Austin Daye, Stanley Johnson, Brandon Knight, Sekou, ect)

That 1st round pick they've traded to the Clippers to acquire Blake Griffin turned out to be the 12th overall pick and with it the Clippers selected Miles Bridges...who was traded to the Charlotte Hornets for their 11th overall pick in the draft - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. This is important as the next offseason the Clippers traded SGA, Danilo Gallinari, 5 1st round picks (4 of them unprotected) and 2 pick swaps to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Paul George. Michael Porter Jr. was drafted 14th overall by the Nuggets while the Bucks selected Donte DiVincenzo 17th overall. All players Detroit could've picked had they kept their pick instead of trading it for a player on an absurdly large contract and with well documented injury record.
Those players all could’ve been much better, but then I wonder if the staff would’ve been able to properly develop those players. I’m a nuggets fan and I think Detroit would’ve given up on MPJ due to his injury issues

The pistons could have been a dynasty far long after the early 2000’s. Just some teams can’t play their cards right. The infinite rebuild shoulda ended long ago but bad officiating and trades got em here :( disappointing
Considering all of this research I put into making this. Yeah there were many ways the Pistons and Joe Dumars in particular doomed them in the beginning. Many great prospects they missed out on because they didn’t want to tank. And then they messed it up more by not developing any talent outside of Drummond (if you consider him developed talent)

Watching the pistons is truly hard to watch 2-28 on a record breaking pace the only people to blame is management. They can’t draft,can’t get free agents, and can’t get a player development coach it’s just sad.

I think it’s so crazy that for as bad as the Sacramento Kings were for their 17 year playoff drought, they haven’t even had a losing streak that reaches the top 40 losing streaks of all time in NBA history. This Detroit Pistons team might not even win 7 games by this rate, it feels like they’ll be at 5 or 6 wins. I could see their losing streak reaching up to 35 games before they get their next win.

Possibly an even longer playoff drought than the Kings? Maybe the first NBA team to have a 20 year playoff drought? It’s definitely not looking good for them right now. They need their own version of Dan Campbell to come in, actually want to be there, and someone that can instill that hard-nosed mentality like what’s going on for the Lions.

In my mind Detroit is supposed to be one of the “it” teams in the league. I remember believing Lebron couldn’t beat them.
Just feels like they shouldn’t ever be as bad as they end up being.
Some Detroit fan in 2004 made a deal with the devil to win it all against the Lakers for the next 20-30 years of suffering.
Diehard Pistons fan and I think Joe Dumars gets too much blame for their downfall. Previous owner Bill Davidson died and that started the chain reaction. When Gores came in he wanted to make an immediate impact and rush it along. Ownership also wanted the coaches fired instead of Dumars.

you did a lot of research for this video and i respect that, but it would be a much better video if the footage matched what you were talking about. this is basically a podcast. pictures of who was traded, highlights/lowlights of players you’re discussing, and putting the year and record on screen would make this a much more enjoyable video, especially for 2 hours
For sure for sure. I’m still learning and wish I had more money for a more professional editor. I’m glad you enjoyed it nonetheless. But lord knows I need more funds to hire someone to do the type of stuff I want my videos to look like 🥲. Eventually I’ll get there.
