What is a good manual or a book which can teach the drawing techniques of the old masters?
I reckon looking at their drawings and copying from them is very useful, but I think I may miss some underlying principles

This is VERY basic high school level stuff. Public libraries and used book stores are literally FULL of books covering the fundamentals of drawing. I would suggest however that learning how to draw works best through guided instruction. Books are useless. If you're serious about learning to draw, draw from real life! You should be walking around with a sketchbook and pencils and making whatever catches your eye your subject. Drawing is about learning how to see, not technique. Look up your city's Arts & Recreation services for evening drawing classes. You might want to look up the local galleries for drawing lessons as well. Daily practice is essential. I spent between 9 and 12 hrs/week in painting and drawing studios when I studied at art collage.. Good Luck, have fun, keep drawing!!

Using the "Egg Drawing Lesson" was definitely used for the early training of Renaissance art students which became an unconscious habit by the time they were advanced students. The egg would also introduce a young student to understand spatial depth, or roundness, through lights and shades, and also facial perspectives for the accurate placings of eyes, lips, nose, etc. when viewed from any position. Hatching, according to the 16th-17th c. art manuscripts, was 3-4 layered approach with the intent to produce a three-dimensional effect ~ ~ ~

An extra point when drawing infants. Their heads are often undersized in older works. It is known that their heads are actually almost size of adult bodies or almost a 1/3 of their own. As an artist from the medical field I hope that helps. Observance and practice works. Sometimes difficult mathematical calculations are thrown out there but when it just makes sense just draw it😊

I tried this today. I drew most of the portrait, except for the shading, in convex lines. It was a different process than what I'm used to. I followed the egg shape/ blocking tutorial, but unfortunately in the end one eye was wider than it should but nonetheless I fixed it. This is one of the most beautiful drawings I have made.
I usually draw in a free style. And while I do some blocking, it is not as elaborate as the Egg technique. And I erase as I go. But in this case i did not have to erase as much in order to get the proportions right. I like the look of fewer lines in portraits. Hopefully you can make more videos

These are very basic characteristics, but not a guide to drawing like the Masters. That would entail the need to express the ineffable, the real content, almost a religious experience. No one has ever been able to really draw like these Old Masters, although many make rather cold attempts. In the actual drawings of Old Masters, we see powerful autographic line qualities. In many cases they appear quite quickly executed, which means that the Masters did not hesitate, had unattainable innate draftsmanship abilities, and expressed beauty that most can only admire from afar. We can all agree on one thing: the Old Master drawings are worthy of intense study and lifelong admiration.

@@dez.---ihaveseenthisbefore5076 Thank you so much, 5076. Your comment is appreciated, since most art replies are rather mean and backbiting attacks. As you might glean, I have always admired the great masters of painting and drawing. And I have found that over the decades my tastes have become more discerning, and I feel that long experience enables the art lover to more fully experience the more profound achievements of great artists. That is, their real expression of light, space, form, integrated composition, observation, beauty of draftsmanship, the intellect, and perhaps most difficult of all: a sense of deep humanity as we might feel in front of a Van der Weyden, a Rembrandt, or a Picasso, Rodin or Giacometti. I have tried my own hand at copying some master works, but would not consider demonstrating such things on youtube. Back at Ivy League university, my venerable old professor of drawing stated he had never seen anyone so well capture not only the technique and appearance of a master drawing, but also the "sense", the real content and feeling. There are so many great artists to admire. Recently, my attention has gone to artists like: Watteau, Pisanello, Masaccio, deKooning, and of course, early Picasso. Thank you for a positive comment.
