As winter approaches many will start pulling out the antifreeze for those frosted windows. But antifreeze or, ethylene glycol is toxic to your pets. We talk to Dr. James Speiser with IndyVet Emergency and specialty hospital.

3. Sooo, for me:
a few things to add to first aid kit AND travel bags:
a travel size bottle of hydrogen peroxide.
And a couple travel/airplane size bottle of everclear/patron/vodka.
Internet:
Medium-size dogs typically weigh 30 to 70 pounds.
8 shots = 12 ounces = 1.5 cups = 355 cc's = 355 ml
Soo, for buddy, who weighs right about ten pounds...maybe 12 on a full belly lol...
given the weight range is about 1/4th to 1/3 the dosage...so around 2 shots to 3 shots (2.64 rounded up) of vodka/ patron...
= 4 ounces vodka/patron (3.96 ounces)
= just barely "half a cup" of vodka/patron (0.495 cup)
= 117 cc's = 117 ml
Both Vodka & Patron are:
Alcohol/volume: 40% "Proof" = 80.

Most shot glasses hold around 1.25 oz. to 1.5 oz.,
1 us fluid ounce = 29.574 milliliters
1 cc = 1 ml
1 shot = 44 cc

So if measuring out straight Everclear...which is 95% Alcohol = 190 proof....
That would mean:
MEDIUM SIZED DOG using Everclear would be:
3-1/2 shots everclear (3.368 shots of everclear) [ Basically HALF AS MUCH Everclear as vodka]..
3.368 shots = 5 ounces = 0.632 cup almost 3/4 of a cup or a little more tha half a cup
3.368 shots = 149 cc's = 149 ml
Buddy size 10 to 12 pounds approximately would then be:
A little bit under a full shot of everclear (0.842 of a shot of everclear to as much as 1 shot of Everclear (1.11 shot of everclear)
Sooo...for buddy:
one shot glass = 1.25 ounces to 1.5 ounces of Everclear...
Or 37 ml to 44 ml of Everclear...
Or 0.156 of a cup to 0.1875 of a cup of Everclear
(Bottom line ...slightly MORE DRUNK in this situation is better than not drunk enough! )
And those dosages are given every 4 to 6 hours... !!!
To be started immediately do not wait more than 8 to 10 hours after initial exposure to begin or prognosis would be VERY poor.

1. Doing just fine so far. We just got up to go out and go pee.
I was going to text last night:
I think buddy is taking his "alcohol/patron" almost as well as I do.... he is relaxed and Sleepy
Just this morning I watched ...
Within one hour ALL the antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is fully ABSORBED.
About 5 cc's is lethal to a cat...
Looked like about one cup would be lethal to a 10 to 20 pound dog...
within 3 to 4 hours the the initial Acidosis that cause them to behave as if drunk, wobbly, clumsy, etc wears off...
And toxicity starts...
TREATMENT window MUST BEGIN within 8 to 10 hours...or it is too late.
Within about 24 hours they can be in very severe toxicity ...and they can be in severe irreversible acute renal (kidney) failure.
Everclear/other high proof alcohol MUST BE STRATED within 8 to 10 hours after ingestion....
i.e. treatment has to begin right away.
i.e. have UNOPENED everclear ON HAND.

How much ever clear would we give for body weight of dog?
How much for approximate amount of antifreeze consumed?
How frequently?
And for how long?

I think the idea behind lack of detail is to get you to bring your dog to a veterinary clinic and allow them to administer the treatment.

4. Just had to work through the math... WOW...
"IF" this had
The tiny bottle of patron is only 50 ml = 1.691 ounces = 0.211 cup ...
Which means buddy would have needed: TWO TINY BOTTLES of patron/vodka 50 ml each x times two = 100 ml immediately just for the first 4 to 6 hours....
And here I had only given him a about a 1/10th to 1/8th of a bottle.... wow...
If he really drank antifreeze in any significant quantity I would NOT have had NEAR ENOUGH...and CERTAINLY did NOT give him enough!!
Well, CLOSE CALL....
Good thing...
Now that I have done a little more research, I should be a little more prepared...and hopefully there will NOT be a next time,
but if there is,
hopefully buddy and I will be able to cope with a hangover and bark about it later...!
