Paul Revere and the Raiders were HUGE! They aren't forgotten. They had more hits than pretty much all the other groups on your list together. Love is very well-known, too, as their FOREVER CHANGES is widely considered a classic.
Well, none of them were "forgotten". even if a couple (the sonics & the gants) were really only popular locally and achieved a cult following later on. Most were well known popular acts at the time.
@@jjs490the band Love was hindered by Arthur Lee's refusal to tour. A couple of their songs got FM airplay but minimal AM exposure. Most of my music loving friends knew little about them back in the mid-60s

Hey I liked this one. I'm 68, so a young kid during most of these. I kept stopping the video to play the songs he thought he couldn't play, all easy to find. I think one thing would have really helped about 12 of these bands: A SECOND HIT!
I played in two garage bands but some of these Ive never heard of. The Standells were one of my favorites. Another was the Uniques out of Shreveport La. Talked to Joe Stampley a few times and he had a great voice. Then he turned country. Great times!!
I remember all these bands. Loved the mid 60s garage sound. Our nextdoor neighbor ran the local teen radio station. His son was the top dj. He turned me on to all the new bands. Where the action is. Hulabaloo. Band Stand. Loved them all.
At 12:33 Eric Burdon & the Animals, Not the Five Americans! Also 12:06 & 13:39 are The Balloon Farm. 14:13, 14:18 & 14:33 all appear to be Shadows of Knight, Not the Music Explosion. Pretty sure 14:51 is The Leaves. 15:47 is the Chocolate Watchband. 15:51 is Big Star from the 70's ( although Alex Chilton was the lead singer for the Box Tops in the 60's, so.....). 20:02....The Doobie Brothers??? C'mon people! 32:02, have no clue who it is! 31:03 Them featuring van Morrison.......Sheesh!
AI generated crap like this are full of errors. This was my era too. I disagree about the Leaves at 14:51. One of the Leaves' founding members Jim Pons doesn't appear to be in this shot. Pons went on to the Turtles and briefly, Frank Zappa.
Yes, the band at 12:33 is Eric Burdon And The Animals. And, the group shown at 20:02 definitely looks like the Doobie Brothers. When AI and unqualified video assemblers collaborate, a mess like this is the result.
The reason George Young of the Easybeats mentored AC/DC is because he is Angus Young’s older brother. Dave Purple of the Cryan Shames went on to win a Grammy for engineering Theme From Shaft by Isaac Hayes.
Not just Angus, but also Malcolm and I believe his older brother Alex had a hit with the song 'Deep Water' as lead-singer and bassplayer of the band Grapefruit
Love most of the bands in this video montage. Paul Revere & The Raiders had a hit in the early 70s, plus they still played up till 2016 or so. Electric Prunes played up until early 2000s or late 90s? Sonics played into the 90s era.
If you’re already a fan of garage rock, you won’t find anything new from this video. The mainstream may have forgotten these bands but any fan of 60s rock would consider most of them quintessential listening.
Just found your channel and really enjoyed the content although some of the bands meant very little to me here in the UK. Interestingly, one of the bands I do remember is Love who had what was known as a 'turntable hit' here with 'Alone again or' meaning it was played a lot but had little or no chart success. However, their claim to fame ( and not a lot of people know this, as Michael Caine used to say) is that the instrumental break in the middle of their track 'The Castle' from the album 'Da Capo' was used by the BBC as a theme tune to their TV programme 'Holiday' - about holidays, obviously. Quite how someone at the BBC managed to find that somewhat obscure track is anybody's guess! Great content sir, keep it up.
Awesome list! I’m 17 and actually love most of these groups, wish some of them had more songs. But in my opinion, I think The Box Tops are one of the best gone groups from the 60s. Sure they’re still well known for their classic hit The Letter but they also had other good songs like Soul Deep, Cry Like A Baby, Choo Choo Train, and Neon Rainbow. Also other gone groups I like are The Outsiders, Buckinghams, Classics IV, Kingsmen, Searchers (and more!) , just to name a few.
Mark Lyndsey had a big solo hit with "Cherokee Nation"( think it came out in '68, maybe '69) a strong message song about the unjust and terrible treatment of Native American people in general, Mark Lyndsey, ( I think) is full blooded Cherokee. Paul Revere & the Raiders were definetly one of the best bands from that great 60's era. "Hungry", " Kicks" and "Just like me" ( Pat Benatar and her band did a blistering remake, as she also did with the Beatles "Helter Skelter"
. Mark Lindsay is not full-blooded Cherokee . The raiders recorded this in 1971.. this song was originally written in 1959 by John D. Loudermilk. You can hear the original Indian reservation by Marvin Rainwater from 1959 and also the version by Don Fardon from 1968 on TH-cam
Electric Prunes where great as was Paul Revere. Mark Lyndsey from Paul Revere still tours once in a while with the Happy Together tour. Love the music.
James Lowe and the rest of the Prunes were still making new music at least as recently as the mid-2000s. They released an album called Artifact which was very cool. I'm not sure if their website is still active, however.
The Blues Magoos is still played on oldies stations! Not forgotten by any means! Add Vanilla Fudge, Beau Brummels, Strawberry Alarm Clock, and the Raiders too!

During Chicago's Cryan' Shames segment, some of the pics and film are of British band Paul And Ritchie And The Crying Shames. Two completely different acts.
Yes, correct. All the footage is of the UK band, easily distinguished by a different spelling: Cryin' Shames vs Chicago's Cryan' Shames. The UK band were produced by Joe Meek. His signature haunting sound being very prominent in all of his productions especially 'Telstar' by The Tornados, a UK and US #1. Meek committed suicide on the anniversary of Buddy Holly's death, claiming to have had communications with Holly's spirit. Just before killing himself, he shot his landlady. The last record released just prior to his death was a Cryin' Shames single 'Nobody Waved Goodbye'.
Yeah, the Cryan Shames were sort of our house band at Lyons Township Jr. College (LTJC) in LaGrange in 65/66 (called The Travelers back then). I had a class with Gerry Stone (Stonehenge) and ran against Tom Doody (Toad) for Student Council. The pictures of them (and not the other band) brings back lots of memories of that time.
In 1966, I saw the Standells; they were an opening act for the Rolling Stones. I saw Paul Revere in '66 as well.(and saw them again, I think in the 80s). I really don't think Paul and the Raiders belong on this list. You could say they were a second tier band. Not at Stones or Beatles level, but they did get their share of airplay in the day. And they did keep touring up until 2022.
Saw Paul Revere and the Raiders a few times on shows in San Francisco around '64 or '65. Pretty sure they performed live, not lip-synching. Wore Revolutionary War-type outfits. Those review shows, with several acts, were a lot of fun.
The Sonics were buried with the MC5. The labels had no idea what to do with them and their fans didn't inhabit the same mainline clubs as their pop/rock or psychedelic cousins.
I love the sonics, just received a T-shirt in the mail featuring them on the front in one of the pictures you posted here. Fun fact that wasn’t mentioned that George Young from the Easybeats is related to Angus and Malcolm young from AC/DC. Also the keyboardist in the strawberry alarm clock is Corey Feldman‘s dad.

I get a chuckle out of all of the people who are incredulous that these are forgotten bands. If you are younger than 60 chances are that you’ve never heard of these bands. Some of these songs get used in movies so some people might’ve heard of the songs but they don’t know the name of the bands.
@birdonthehorizon And when the Who finished their set they destroyed their equipment. I think it's might have been the first time, and the audience was like, WTF!
@@JoeKentMagic Actually no, it’s not the Box Tops, either. It’s actually the band Big Star which was Alex Chilton’s group formed after he was the singer in the Box Tops.
I know all these bands and either have albums by them or have key tracks on Nuggets releases, including "Mass in F Minor". A friend of mine had an original pressing of "Lies" on white vinyl and I offered him quite a bit for it but he wouldn't sell. I find it interesting that you mentioned the members for most bands but only mentioned Sal Valentino for the Beau Brummels and Arthur Lee for Love. Ron Elliott, who wrote all the original songs for the Beau Brummels, and Bryan Maclean, who wrote some of Love's best songs, were awesome and deserved a mention for sure. Plus, as noted, you've included photos of the wrong bands...most notably the Animals. All that said, still a good listen.
The Shadows Of Knight were great! "Bad Little Woman" - the Doors took it and made When The Music's Over. "The Behemoth" - I hear a lot of it in the Doors song The End. They also had a fantastic version of "Hey Joe". Their "Gloria" is the top version of the song ever.
@@RichardByrd-n3w Ah but she knew all about them before I did as she had a lot of their records she brought back to Scotland with her from Montreal Canada in 1970
You forgot The Fifth Estate, a band from 1967 that got up to number 11 nationally with Ding Dong the Witch is Dead. In fact, they toured with a number of the bands on this list. Also, they have a new album coming out in the spring.
we all are guilty of gravitating towards where the "programmers" led us, and said programmers gave DJs marching orders, too. never were people asking the radio station to play Electric Prunes. i had my Beatles lunchbox and toed the line of being happy for what was forced upon me.
Publishing rights to “Incense & Peppermints” by the Strawberry Alarm Clock is owned by Paul McCartney. The lead singer of the band’s recording was sung by a singer of another band. When the band performed this song, each band member lip sync to the lead vocal, per different appearances on TV.
'Mass in F Minor' was, of course, recorded by the Electric Prunes. But it wasn't the same Electric Prunes that recorded 'I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night.' Entirely different band.
Agree re Paul & Raiders. Saw them a few times, most memorably on the bill with the Stones at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium. Full costume, giving their best. seemingly having a good time.

Well, check them out now if you are into mid-sixties garage rock and psychedelia. I am 72, and these bands were a big part of our soundtrack.
I get a chuckle out of all of the people who are incredulous that these are forgotten bands. If you are younger than 60 chances are that you’ve never heard of these bands. Some of these songs get used in movies so some people might’ve heard of the songs but they don’t know the name of the bands.
You may a bit young for this? (Ah . . . to be 58 again!)
That's the Doobie Brothers' photo @20:02. Had no idea they were one of the Gone Groups of the 1960s. lol
The Doobie Brothers are 70's. Also still performing
Saw the Blues Magoos in 1967 in Dallas, where the top bill was Herman's Hermits. The first warm-up band was The Who.
So The Who paid some dues.
@birdonthehorizon And when the Who finished their set they destroyed their equipment. I think it's might have been the first time, and the audience was like, WTF!
This was great but I wish you had played more snippets of their hits so people could
better recognize some of them.
The band at 5:28 is the Zombies. At 12:31, it's the Animals. Otherwise, a very nice little compilation.
At 15:50 ... The BOX TOPS !
@@JoeKentMagic Actually no, it’s not the Box Tops, either. It’s actually the band Big Star which was Alex Chilton’s group formed after he was the singer in the Box Tops.
Interesting. entertaining and informative !!!
I remember most of these bands. They didn't get a lot of airtime on our AM stations.
I built a casino in Reno for Paul Revere called Kicks. He was so nice and a cool guy. He was awesome to work with.
The Beau Brumels were animated in the Flintstones. It is hard to forget them.
The Beau Brummelstones!
I thought they were British
The Shadows Of Knight were great! "Bad Little Woman" - the Doors took it and made When The Music's Over. "The Behemoth" - I hear a lot of it in the Doors song The End. They also had a fantastic version of "Hey Joe". Their "Gloria" is the top version of the song ever.
The 5 Americans are highly under rated.
Paul Revere is another band I came to listen to because my wife was raised in Canada
They are from Boise Idaho not Canada
They are from Boise Idaho not Canada
@@RichardByrd-n3w Ah but she knew all about them before I did as she had a lot of their records she brought back to Scotland with her from Montreal Canada in 1970
Lies was one killer song
, Thanks a lot
You forgot The Fifth Estate, a band from 1967 that got up to number 11 nationally with Ding Dong the Witch is Dead. In fact, they toured with a number of the bands on this list. Also, they have a new album coming out in the spring.
20:02 You are talking about a San Jose band, the Syndicate of Sound. You are showing the San Jose band The Doobie Brothers.
Why didn't you play audio clips of their hits?
The Electric Prunes are every documentary music filmmakers favorite “lost” band.
I lasted for 3 and a half minutes - the commentator just sounded too stupidly irritating ...
More music-less talk
Wow! You missed all the bands with no music played! All you got to hear was the annoying voice!
we all are guilty of gravitating towards where the "programmers" led us, and said programmers gave DJs marching orders, too. never were people asking the radio station to play Electric Prunes. i had my Beatles lunchbox and toed the line of being happy for what was forced upon me.
I understand you’ve got to place ads. But there are far too many in this video.
One member of Shadows of Night did he also play with the Music Explosion? He's featured on both.
Jim Sohns?
Интересные группы. Оказывается, в 60 были необычные инструменты, а кто то играл на гитаре за спиной до Хендрикса. 😂
Publishing rights to “Incense & Peppermints” by the Strawberry Alarm Clock is owned by Paul McCartney. The lead singer of the band’s recording was sung by a singer of another band. When the band performed this song, each band member lip sync to the lead vocal, per different appearances on TV.
Don't forget The Chocolate Watchband and The Thirteenth Floor Elavators
It’s not that these bands are forgotten at all, we’ve dropped the distinction of the garage sound bands as a category of music.
Saw the Electric Prined open for Vanilla Fudge in Asbury Park.
Very interesting. But your little documentary lacks music.
I know quite a lot about the era and this list is highly subjective & leaves out better groups that deserve to be heard today.
It would be fun to hear Paul Revere and Raiders from the 50s.
The Sonics had a successful reuniting in 2008..toured for many years
'Mass in F Minor' was, of course, recorded by the Electric Prunes. But it wasn't the same Electric Prunes that recorded 'I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night.' Entirely different band.
Who writer this narrators material?! And where did they get this guy? Off the street? Drove me nuts......
I definitely remember Paul Revere and the raiders
Paul Revere and the Raiders great band.
Other bands one hit wonders.
Agree re Paul & Raiders. Saw them a few times, most memorably on the bill with the Stones at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium. Full costume, giving their best. seemingly having a good time.
I remember all of them .
More like a list of one-hit wonders than best of anything groups. They are gone for that reason. Cheers....
The commercials in the middle of these were too much.
I signed off after 6 minutes.
I have most of them on 45 records in my jukebox.😂
JUST SAYING ***
WHAT I'M TIRED OF IS THE COMMERCIALS CUTTING IN ON THE VIDEOS HERE ON TH-cam ***
THEY ARE SO INCONSIDERATE ABOUT WHEN AND WHERE THEY CUT IN ***
Love Blues Magoos!
Music Machine, Talk Talk... Syndicate of sound, Little Girl ..top 5 greatest pop songs of the era... oh..The Seeds, Pushin to hard ....Count five, Psychotic reaction...Love, Little Red Book...... memories
Too bad that so many of these entries don’t have a clip of their music.
