    Text-centric dialogue is something I miss; voiced dialogue is great when you're doing something else at the same time, but voiced dialogue has never reached the level that procedural text dialogue did. Using text it's possible to change out names, phrases, and even create names on the fly. Spoken dialogue means that if the player can create their own name, it'll never be spoken (some games did include a number of names that could be spoken, but not every possible one. Black & White and Fallout 4 took this approach).
    If you go up to an NPC on the street in Daggerfall, you can ask them about the location of your destination, and they'll give you an answer based on the relative position of that building or character (and sometimes they'll be wrong too). Not only that, but you had different modes of speaking to NPCs, each of which would work better or worse based on what type of character they were, but reacting badly to the other. So a street thug would react negatively to upper class manners and mock you, but a noble would be horrified by casual street talk.
    Morrowind removed most of the dynamic dialogue, NPCs now always give the same directions to the same locations and can't help you about any others. It did still give NPCs a huge shared library of dialogue to spout about various topics in the world if the player wanted to know. This dialogue was shared between genders and races (which could sometimes not fit, but in general it worked fine). Once Oblivion came along though, it removed most of the generic, shared dialogue, replacing it with 2-3 lines of unique dialogue for an NPC and a rumours option that was shared. At least each NPC got to be themselves, but it still feels like something was lost. Plus with voiced dialogue, each option can't result in too much dialogue, or it will take forever for players to take it in because of how slow voices tend to be compared to reading text. And text dialogue is far cheaper to produce.
    I know subtitles exist, but they feel like a poor man's text box, being on a constant timer before disappearing forever. Gimme that Morrowind hyperlink-filled text box any day.

    Remember when we had to acutally discover environments or sometimes even needed to draw maps of them because we didn't have mini maps? Every find felt much more special, because you didn't find it because of an icon on the minimap but because you discovered it. I get why minimaps exist, it can be frustrated to get stuck... but still, it can be fun to explore and discover and maybe even miss things, especially in times of the internet... You might see a let's play and realise that that person had a very different experience. May it be because of random events, not so obvious choices or just by being allowed to not care and miss sidequests or locations.

    True Love 95 (a hentai dating sim) had a schedule & skill mechanic as well.
    You start each day chosing you schedule for the day. During school days your morning and afternoon were blocked out for school but evenings and night you could chose from a preset list of activities, each one increasing a stat or granting some other effect.
    For example working gave you money, while going shopping let you spend said money to buy gits or bonus items.
    When you went to sleep it would calculate all bonuses and increase or decrease abilities as necessary.
    As a dating sim some of the girls would only interact with you if you had a certain skill score.
    You also had a calendar and if you did certain things at specifics days or times you could trigger special events/meetings.

    Great video! So much in it I had to watch it twice already. I haven't played many horror games so they were all new to me. Gregory horror show looks really weird but interesing. My favourite unexpected bits were about Hidden choices and fixed camera angles. The bits I was looking out for were immersive skill progression and couch co-op. Good to see them there and you explained them really well. I too remember reading the game manual on the way back from the store! Good times. I remember at christmas sometimes I wouldn't be with my pc for a few days so I read the manual front to back. It would be nice if we had more beautiful digital game manuals. I suppose there are community wikis. There's something missing though.

    It was weird that Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem (a GameCube game) was the first title mentioned after saying in the time of PS2. Not wrong, but odd that it was first. Didn't it also have a chance to tell the player the memory card was corrupted or the save was deleted? Had to rewatch four minutes of video because I was distracted by that, lol.

    I now want a narrative game that features dialogue choices, but doesn't tell you what's significant and adjusts the choices you get in the background, based off the choices you have made. So for example, if you tend to be confrontational, the game will gradually fade out the more amiable options towards those characters. Eventually the whole story and world would adapt based on who your character interacts with, how they interact with them, and how they interact with the world as a whole. I think that could lead to some interesting, organic storytelling, and avoid interactions that feel unnatural or forced based on your choices

    • @yagmanx
      @yagmanx  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes this sounds like the type of game I'm craving as well. I LOVE branching narrative games but I would like the option for it to be organic as I'm way too much of an indecisive person

    Have you played fatal frame? Your attire 2:45 reminded me some of their themes. BTW, the 'Gregory's horror show' character is so cute, especially when peaking like that 3:14 😄
    - Actually, eavesdropping/peaking is quite an awesome mechanic and I think its the best one in this list (apart from 'fixed camera perspective') as it draws the player into the game
    - I think its a cool mechanic because it plays with the players curiosity and instinctive nature.
    A game called 'michigan: report from hell' used it - however for mostly notorious purposes 😅 the game itself starts off well but quickly falls apart due to bad voice acting and an uninspired gameplay.

    They could adapt sightjacking to modern or scifi settings too. Let's say you play a superspy whose gimmick is attaching cameras to wandering NPCs and you use this to solve problems, like watching as a guard inputs a PIN into a door lock, or scouting out an area or so on.

    If it makes you happy, I AM using random events based on sanity for the game I'm making, and the player choices too (without menus). I always disliked the choice system in RE3, it felt like the game tried to force you to an action, in RE2 the game never told you about the gas tank for the crocodile, so it's better when the player finds out by themselves... So player choices are an integral bit for the game I'm making too.

    • @TheDrsalvation
      @TheDrsalvation ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As for fixed camera angles, I'm staying away from those lol, I don't like them, and I wouldn't want to make something I don't enjoy. The fixed cam angles break my immersion and makes me think the game characters are idiots, just because they can't see the zombie right in front of them unless the camera allows them. Hiding enemies behind camera feels cheap. I DID have a static cam angle section (the way I could make it work for me in order to be immersed) is that your character is guiding another character in a dark area by using security cameras, and you're playing that in first person looking at a screen where a render texture is applied on the static camera angles. I lost the project, and I'm considering if I really need to add that bit again or not.

    • @saffral
      @saffral ปีที่แล้ว

      Having a zombie positioned just outside of the camera's view is a decision by the developer, it's not something that's required by the camera angle, and can still happen in third-person games or even first-person games where the field of view is very low (which is extra common in horror titles so the player can't see as much). It seems like the kind of feature that would be used in a game to be more "cinematic", since fixed camera angles are extremely common in movies and shows, and actually accomplishes being artistically cinematic unlike black bars or 30 FPS.
      Also didn't eXperience 112 do the "guiding a character via security cameras" thing for its entire game? Oh, and Republique too I think? Seems like a neat idea, I don't know of any games that have done it to a reasonable level of success.

    I remember when your score in a game mattered. These days not too much. For the most part, in Fortnite when you die, or even win a match, the score screen is really slow and boring, and sometimes you can't even pull up your map screen to see how many kills (eliminations) you had because the squad is readying up for the next match. Your team mates can't even see your achievements, they have no idea how skilled you are, or if you've just been derping around the entire match. Yet this game is raking in millions of dollars a day still. sigh...
